zephonic
band: Azimuth album: Curumim song #3: Homem The first two chords of the intro blow me away. They are: LH: G-E RH: F#-A#-C#-F# and LH: D-A RH: C#-F-G#-C# What chord symbols would you use to notate them? Taking the bass note as root, you'd have to say something like G-6maj7b5 or Gdim maj7 (does that even exist????) but F#7b9 would also describe it. Second chord from the bass note/root would again be D-maj7b5 or C#b9. Thoughts? gear list.pdf
Floyd Tatum
I don't know that tune, but in general: there's no reason to assume the bass notes are roots - they could just as easily be inversions. I'd have to hear the context to know. If you can recognize an inversion, it might make it easier to figure out what the chord is. Context can give you lots of clues. Got a link to a recording? kanker.
G dim maj7 most certainly works - comes out of a G whole/half scale. Are those supposed to be C#'s instead of D#'s? If so I'd call it a C#/D. If not, I might call it a D - b9 #11, but would more likely just notate it. Still, as Floyd pointed out, context is what's important, and defines the function A ROMpler is just a polyphonic turntable.
BlackandWhite
Just had a chuckle looking at this thread for the first time. I started with the first post, from a few years ago, about a chord from an Etta James tune, then jumped to the last page, where, at the top, there seems to have been consensus reached that there are no such things as chords. I assume the 35 pages of posts in the middle explain how that conclusion was reached; I'll have to read it, sometime.... Dave Ferris
I'd call it AbMa7(#5)/Bb. Now that's funny That's actually a perfectly legit way of notating that chord--I use it all the time. https://soundcloud.com/dave-ferris https://www.youtube.com/@daveferris2709
zephonic
Are those supposed to be C#'s instead of D#'s? Oops, good catch. Corrected that. Context can give you lots of clues. The next four chords are A7sus4, E half diminished 7, A7/13 and G maj7. But it's one of those tunes that just constantly keeps modulating (although there is something resembling a root in the form of an Eb#11). I would post an mp3, but that would be illegal, no? And the highlights of this thread: I stand corrected. From now on, this is how I shall spell my chords: The Girl From Ipanema | Am/F |////| Bdim/G |////| Bb/G | Bbdim/Gb | Am/F | Ab2/Gb | Thanks everyone for clearing this up. Oh, now I get it. It's just your basic 2, 4+,6/1, -7. 8 yet? I might need an abacus to play the tune...... gear list.pdf
Dave Ferris
LH: G-E RH: F#-A#-C#-F# and LH: D-A RH: C#-F-G#-C# Thoughts? When I see that first chord, automatically I think Diminished structure. The second chord, has kanker mentioned, Db/D. https://soundcloud.com/dave-ferris https://www.youtube.com/@daveferris2709

linwood
I guess if I were gonna put down a chord symbol I'd go with F#7/G and AM7#5/D and hope for the best.

Steve LeBlanc
I'll just say if I saw any of the About or C versions given in this thread on a chart, I'd have to stop the band and figure out what the hell chord you meant. C/Bb is perfectly fine to use but lazy and implies there's some modal thing going on instead of what it most likely is in context, dominant. Most variations of Bb7 were fine. I'd probably write Bb7+11 If playing the 13 is essential I'd add it...Bb7+11(13) Edited to say: sorry, I was commenting on the first chord, missed this thread first time or just forgot it. Yikes, didn't even see how long the thread is http://www.youtube.com/notesleb
Jazzwee
Steve - I can't believe you brought this thread back to life! LOL. 99% of the discussions here had nothing to do with the chord in question... Is this still the longest thread ever? Piersbruce
Greetings, I'm new to this site from the UK. The chord is not one I would be likely to use but according to Albert Gamse in his book 5200 Chords, the signature is AbM9#5. Hope that helps.
