  1. Without a root, it's a whole tone cluster, for a "cloud" whole tone effect. SK
  2. Hey Mark. Thank you guys... and DB, great job running this place! Best Regards, SK
  3. Amazed this thread is still here! I made the first post back in 2006. A big hello to anyone who may still be here from then. This is "In A Sentimental Mood". I did it a couple days ago, then realized it qualifies - at times - as a 'reharm'. Using Logic, and Keyscape customized C7, featuring a uniquely damaged Roland keyboard action from a guy who sat in and played too hard, and a sporadically sticking pedal. Other than that... My best to everyone.
  4. Sorry to hear this. He seemed to be a genuinely nice guy and his Spacestation product was innovative. I certainly hope the company continues, and RIP.
  5. It hurts to read this. I was on a weekly quartet gig with Kofi on flute back in the 80's in Va. Beach with Billy Drummond on drums. We only played a dozen times or more, but I always remembered Kofi's musicality - totally great to play with. Rest in Peace, Kofi.
  6. Hey thanks Dave, it's fine with me. Fun to hear these archeological digs from the RR - I wish it was all still intact. And thanks Carlo, Linwood, Dave and everybody who made this thread what it was/is - and to Dave Bryce for making it a Key Thread! Originally, I only hoping for a place on KC to share musical ideas, from full reharms to basic chord variations or lines. And it's still going!
  7. Glad you broke the lock open on the door. Nice Solar - it has almost a mysterious quality. Along with the unpredictable voicings, I like the intro being around G... and the occasional left hand lines playing off the melody.
  8. Joe, not sure that it's quotable, but you're welcome to it. ... like back when all the file links still worked! There was some good music in here from members. And it evolved as a harmonic workshop... I know for myself, I'd be influenced by something marino, Linwood or Dave did (and others), and it would be applied to the next song.
  9. Thanks so much for the kindnesses... fun to post in "the Room" again! Nice to 'meet' you, Uncle Jam, thanks. And thanks, Reezekeys. Actually, it's kinda low-fi... maybe it was recorded on a Zoom with an auto limiter, as the background noise drops when we play. Dave, thanks a lot. I don't know what I played there. The keyboard seemed like a toy... so I had fun just playing at it. I enjoyed your thoughtful, rich voicings on Polka Dots, plus the quality recording you're getting! And Dan, in the video - that was a nice, personal version of Skylark.
  10. Very nice playing/renditions by Dave (the tuned piano sounds beautiful) and that Skylark video too. So cool to see this thread inhabited again. Although I'm not posting reharms these days, just playing on a song will have its own reharms/ideas/substitutions. Against my better judgment, here's a very low-fi recording from a soundcheck (background talking, etc.), playing with a talented trumpet player and me on some keyboard I wasn't comfortable with. Just a spontaneous 'All The Things You Are' from 2 yrs ago, no reharm per se, but perhaps some 'harm'.
  11. Hey, nice to see this old thread alive again. Thanks, Dave, for reviving it and drawing my attention to it, and to all the contributors. I haven't listened to the newest files yet - I look forward to hearing them. Too bad so many of the early files have disappeared, whatever they were - that was a long time ago. There was a lot of music in those. My take on reharms has changed now - instead of approaching everything as total new reharms where you feel compelled to completely redo a song, it's really just playing with new approaches, ideas/chords in a personal way. That allows anything to happen, from total reharms to pieces with new ideas. Maybe I could have called it "The Imagination Room" or The Re-imagination Room". I hope to post something soon. Meanwhile, here's a fresh approach to a Xmas tune: [video:youtube]
  12. Yeah Linwood, most impressive. I think this is the new standard for virtual acoustic pianos and keyboards. At this level of quality, $399 would be a good price just for the C7 or Rhodes. Just from using Trilian for years, which has maximum body/tone and can easily dominate a mix - now there are pianos/keyboards that can match it.
  13. Very nice, Steve. Nice lines/feel (most importantly) and recording.
  14. Hey, just wanted to mention I listed my VR-09 in classifieds here. Thought I'd give it a chance to sell first on KC before I list it on a broader market. Thanks. [hijack off]
  15. As a pianist first, I understand your concerns. I was skeptical too before I'd played through it. Sound is impossible to describe, but the thing is the sound coming from the inside of a grand piano is not focused into a stereo sweet spot. It's a mass of frequencies that goes into the air - you hear it everywhere in "3D." That's really what this amp does. And sure, it will sound a little different if you're too close to it, but it still sounds present and clear everywhere, even when you're too close.
  16. In that case, here's another gig story... Fri. night I played a trio performance in a barn for about 100 people. A musician sitting up front said it sounded perfect, but he "doubts it's loud enough for the back of the room." Later, he walked to the back and said it sounded "exactly the same" back there. And someone outside in a gazebo over 100 ft. away from the barn said it sounded great out there. This system was like voodoo for the listeners.
  17. (bumper sticker potential) Hi tarkus, this thread reached zombie status a long time ago - but as the Zombie OP , I'm all for any musical contributions anybody makes. woodtus - that's a majorly dark treatment, but it stays in character throughout and makes a musical statement. So it deserves commenting on... I like it.
  18. FWIW - different kind of "gig report"... not my gig, but Sue played through the SS3 last night with the symphony at a fairly large cathedral. Very open area and high ceiling, almost like being outside. I was seated closer to the back of the church, and the orchestra spanned most of the front wall. The SS3 was on the side of the church, very far left. The bizarre thing was not only was it audible, it sounded like the sound emanated evenly from the entire front wall behind the orchestra. I audibly couldn't pinpoint the source of the sound - hard to believe it was all coming from a small amp off to the side.
  19. Interesting turn in the discussion. To an extent, the SS3 has affected our perceptions of how we hear and experience sound. Using it on a gig last night, musicians commented how they could hear everything I played so well. Time will tell whether the SS3 fits the disruptive technology definition and eventually affects the industry. I think without innovations in amplification for so long, any innovation is at least 'big news'.
  20. Thanks a lot Raymb1, glad you liked that old recording. You know Howard! Great person and drummer. Dave, things are good - hope everything's going good for you too. We've both used the SS3 and we really like it. About the amp... I'll just say you should expect you may be a little underwhelmed at first until you grasp what the amp actually does. It doesn't have the most detailed tone in the lows/mids/highs of the most expensive speakers - it just adds, what I'm calling, a realism factor, and complete dispersion. It'll take a little tweaking for each room, but after that, there's a presence that sounds/feels like nothing else. I also recommend, if you haven't, to check out this thread - a treasure trove of info. Best to you.
  21. The SS3 arrived last week. So much has been said, this review will be brief. For digital AP sound, it exceeds my expectations. This thing puts the sound in the air the way acoustic instruments do - the missing link in sound systems until now. The natural sounding dispersion makes your brain believe the instrument is real.... 3 dimensional and solid, topping off good sound quality with a vital touch of realism. Whats been said about the sound being heard evenly/clearly around the room is true. The video and audio demos are only proof of adequate volume level, but you cant gauge the realism from the demos. The small SS3 has a lot of volume. You get to give the audience the sound you want them to hear, and then you can hear exactly what they hear. So theres no going back to just traditional amps/PAs/powered speakers for me. Kudos to Aspen, and for the reviews that steered many of us in this thread.
  22. Thanks for your thorough explanation, Aspen. Delivery changes noted/expectations adjusted.
  23. good for you, Steve. did they give you a lead time? I'm real close to ordering myself. Thanks - 2 weeks for them to get it back in stock, then 2-5 days for delivery.
  24. Finally decided to buy the SSv3 today and called Sweetwater to place the order. The salesman said the item, as of just recently, is no longer delivered to Canada or anywhere outside the US. Still available for US orders only. Oh well, does anyone have info on when/if it will be available again? Thanks. EDIT: Sweetwater just called back - it was a problem in their system showing it wasn't available outside the US. So all's fine - product ordered.
  25. My experience with SW is, once you've ordered your first purchase you have a sales guy assigned to you - whether you know it or not. If you ever received an email from SW, there's a good chance your sales person's name (from your first purchase) is on it. I'd find out who you talked to at SW and ask him about this - chances are they'll expedite the situation.
