  1. Ok, so we're cool, good to hear. 🙂 Just out of curiosity, which version of Prodikeys do you have? There's 3 according to Wikipedia: Prodikeys, Prodikeys DM, and Prodikeys PC-MIDI. Not sure what the difference is, the Wiki page doesn't go into much detail. As far as I can tell, all versions connect to the computer via a PS-2 port. For those that don't know, PS-2 is a mini-DIN port used on older IBM-PC's to connect keyboards and mice - it was popular for quite a few years. It looks like a miniature MIDI port, often green or purple. Would your iPad Pro have such a port? Or is there some way to jury-rig a connection? EDIT: I just did some googling, and answered my own question: there are PS/2-to-USB adapters available. But that still leaves the driver problem, which is what you're facing. Correct?
  2. Hi, welcome aboard. I don't think anyone else has addressed this part of your post. The ES120 has good piano sounds, but (imho), the Nord does much better in the rhodes department. And I don't the the ES120 has any Hammond sounds at all, whereas that is an area the Nord excels in. Is it mostly the feel of the Nord you're not happy with? Or is it the piano sound? If you can afford it, why not buy the ES120, and keep the nord? You can have the Kawai on the bottom, and the nord up top for b3, rhodes, & synth sounds. That would be a good setup.
  3. 👍 I think at one point you said "I'll sell you mine", although you added that you were half-joking. And I may have expressed interest, although in further posts, I added that it really wouldn't work for me for various reasons. So, long story short, I hope I didn't give the impression that I was seriously interested in buying it. And if that wasn't clear before, then I apologize if you went to the effort of finding it based on that impression. I would be interested if some company were to make a modern version of it, using remote usb, or bluetooth, or something like that. I wonder if that will ever happen.
  4. Wow, thanks Analogholic! Never heard of Jim Beard before, and never heard this music - it's really cool. Unusual hardly describes it.
  5. Cool - I just learned a new word - skeuomorphic. Good one!
  6. Absolutely. As soon as they know I'm taken, women line up with mattresses strapped to their backs. 😎
  7. I think maybe I'm starting to get Brad Mehldau.... makes a lot of sense
  8. I don't see that as being much of an improvement over using a mouse. You're just using a knob instead of a mouse. The thing being discussed was the idea of adjusting one parameter at a time, whether it be by a mouse or a knob. The other guy (still can't remember his name - let's call him MG (Mouse Guy 🙂), may know synthesizers so well that he has a map of the whole thing in his mind, so that controlling one thing at a time is not a problem, for him. But I think there are lots of people that don't have that deep an understanding of what they're doing. For beginners, learning is probably superior on a knob-based hardware synth. Then again, there might be a whole new generation of kids growing up on vst-style synths.
  9. Those are aftermarket knob interfaces. The first one is probably too generic to be really useful. The second less so. But, again, knob interfaces, whether built-in or aftermarket, are not what Marinelli was discussing with the other guy (can't remember name right now). They were discussing vst-style softsynths, using a mouse interface. Apples and oranges.
  10. Marinelli was talking about vst (and other computer-based) synths, not hardware digital synths, so, apples and oranges.
  11. Wendy Carlos - the original Caitlin Jenner. It took balls to be the first high-profile change-over person. That is, err....
  12. I wasn't joking - I can see it working. I'm not sure the technology's there yet, but it probably will be before long.
  13. Perhaps the "interface problem" of digital (computer-based) synths is one area where "artificial reality" goggles could be a solution. The AR goggles could be programmed to create an artificial "knobby interface", and the user has only to reach out and turn the AK's (artificial knobs 🙂) - of course, the knobs only exist in his mind, but so what? As long as music comes out the other end, problem solved, maybe....??
  14. I confess that I actually buy and enjoy Marmite (the UK stuff that Vegemite is copied from). I've never had Vegemite, but I'm assuming it's similar to Marmite. Can't explain it, it's just one of the crazy things that happens as part of your UK upbringing, along with mushy peas, blood sausage (yes, it's made from blood! - waste not, want not), and chip butties (a sandwich made with white bread and chips ("french fries" to you Yanks!). P.S. Chip butties are better than they sound. Must be made with fresh, doughey white bread, and hot, fresh-out-of-the-deep-fryer chips (i.e. "french fries"), which are made from fresh potatoes, and deep-fried in fresh lard. Oh, yeah, and lots of butter on that bread - it gets melted by the hot chips. Perhaps a little vinegar on the chips. No ketchup or other condiment required. My mouth is watering thinking about this. Gotta figure out a way to make myself some chip butties. Here's a pretty good how-to video in case you're interested: https://youtu.be/TOkFu3hGXpA?si=99dKYPrzLTGO25-k
  15. Thanks, Dave. Turns out to not be political correctness after all. 👍 I'm glad! I should never have doubted good old Keyboard Corner!
  16. On my budget, I'm going to have to wait for the Berringer Soul 🙂
  17. I wonder what other politically incorrect words also trigger this notice.
  18. And I say this without res********s. EDIT (a few minutes later): Well damn! I had to try it myself, so I just posted the above sentence, with the word spelled out, and I got the notice too! Very annoying! Dave Bryce, does Musicplayer.com have some kind of list of forbidden words? Or is this coming from somewhere else?
  19. I wonder, what was the source of that violation notice? Not musicplayer.com, surely? You're in Massachusetts, right? I wonder if it's some kind of state thing? Quite curious about this. It's quite troubling - Big Brother tapping you on the shoulder - "Uh, you can't use that word". As you pointed out, the fact that they didn't interpret the context correctly shows that it was an unthinking algorithm. AI at it's best 🙂
  20. I don't hear very much of what I call "jazz language".
  21. That guy makes good videos about charts! I also watched his videos about the pros and cons of using tablets for charts. He also discussed how formatting charts for tablets is different than for paper. Interesting stuff. It's something that I probably won't be getting into, for various reasons. But according to him (and he should know), it's becoming a necessity for working musicians, like it or not. This thread's made it to page 2 - whoda thunk?
  22. Wouldn't that take up pretty much the whole overhead compartment? Better hope you have some very agreeable compartment-mates, that didn't bring much overhead luggage, or that the flight is half-empty! 😀😁 I can't imagine a flight crew allowing that. Seriously, I would say either checked-in baggage, in a reasonably good-quality flight case, or (best option) - look into renting something there. Definitely not a soft case - have you seen baggage-handlers at work??😬
  23. New word of the day - octavo! I haven't done much choir work before, and haven't heard that term. (Choir music usually comes in this size - roughly 7" x 10 3/4", called octavo). I've been doing some of this lately, so I can impress the conductor with my new vocabulary. Since my eyesight is not great, I photocopy the octavos and make them larger - 108% or 109% seems to work - onto 8 1/2 x 11 paper. Makes it easier to read, and I can mark it up with chord symbols, etc, to help me. Some of this music, especially more gospel-oriented, has lots of juicy chords going on. Leading to this thread about taping charts. I've done lots of taping before, mostly big band charts, and just long charts in general, but choral charts is new.
