Will likely be away from the forum for a bit

I may not be around the forum for a bit, not sure how long. This coming Monday, I will be having an operation on my right eye, both for Cataract, and a Trabeculectomy (puts a little vent in my eye under the upper eyelid to relieve excess pressure from glaucoma).

Normally this is considered fairly routine. In my case, I have been blind in the left eye since I was 5, caused by an accident that severed the optic nerve, so there is about a 1% risk of blindness. However, as the glaucoma progresses in spite of two different eyedrop meds each day, there is a 10 to 20% chance of blindness if nothing is done.

At any rate, with a successful operation, my vision will be very blurred for several days, it is probable that my existing glasses won't be usable, and they suggest not getting new lenses for a month to six weeks. People have quite different results from cataract surgery, some have perfect vision, others not as much without lenses. I do expect to have to have lenses for close up vision, since the inserted lens doesn't change focal length like the natural lens.

For those who believe in prayer, I'd appreciate your prayers.

Thanks,

Jim

Jim you contribute a lot around here. Especially with all the old electro-mechanical gear. We will definitely be thinking of you. Check in when you can and let us know how things are going.

Best to you Jim. My wife is a nurse in an out-patient surgery center. Her departing words leaving for work this morning were 'Ugh, I got to do retinas all day". Point being this stuff is becoming more and more routine and the technology is absolutely incredible. I get to hear about the latest $10M+ toys she's operating and it is just light years ahead of the toys we deal with on daily basis.

Anyway I guess no matter how good the tech this stuff is never routine enough when you're the patient. Again hoping for the best possible outcome!

The only "routine" operations are the ones done on other people. When it comes to you, it is one of a kind. The procedure is perhaps better called "frequently done", but given your history, it should be treated with utmost care.

The cataract portion is straightforward enough that it should present no cause for concern. (and I have seen >50K of these.)

The trabeculectomy is less common, but has been refined to a procedure I'm sure my Grandmother would have been happy to have had when she was diagnosed with glaucoma. Back then it was drops until you drop and that is all we can do for you. No, you have a chance to get ahead in the game of keeping the pressure down in your eye successfully.

As the others here, you will be in my (dare I say?) prayers.

I look forward to your return with a positive view of the whole thing and seeing better than you did before.

Don

Jim, I ache in sympathetic resonance. Delicate medical procedures are especially unnerving. You're wise to proceed steadily and not hold back when the time is due. I press through my woes like a 3-legged dog; music itself, my great tools and the benefits of KC are battery-charging positives. I wouldn't dare accuse any of our local acolytes of excessive sanity, but your input is one of the more notable additions. I hope for the best for you and Dave, as eye surgery is supremely icky.:thu: Let us know how it unfolds.

I'll pray. Keep us posted if you can.

Like so many others, I have benefited greatly from your Kurz experiences.

BTW, I didn't know your name was Jim until now.

Thanks a bunch, guys. At first, I just didn't want to think about doing it; but then I realized that my analysis was wrong - I was only considering the risk of the operation itself; but not considering the risk of doing nothing.

As the cataract has gotten worse, it has gone from just avoiding night driving to concern that the vision would get bad enough not to be able to drive.

This doctor is the specialist in this relatively small town in glaucoma. I'm still amazed at how well the radiation treatments went at the local Oncology Center - the state of the art equipment can generate a lot higher power, can modulate the power as needed, and rotates 360 degrees so that the radiation comes from all directions instead of only one. Medically, things are much better than a few years ago in what can be done.

My wife is a retired RN, has worked in OR, and had been part of the team in the past on both operations.

It's time, and I'm fully at peace with the decision.
