A couple of things that jumped out at me..mainly production issues. The electric piano sounds really good and fat (what instrument is this?). So good in fact that the rest of the instruments sound thin and lacking in comparison. Most notably: the mute trumpet. I've used midi mute trumpet on a couple of songs too so I know how hard it is to get a good natural sound with proper dynamics and expression without being "screetchy". The natural thing to do of course is drown it in reverb to try and hide the "unrealism" but this doesn't really help. The 808 drums, at least to me, sound too much like an "out of the box" 808 kit. I've probably done the same in a lot of my music too but sometimes it's hard to see these aspects of your own music after you've been so close to it. Perhaps some funky processing FX could be done to these drums to make them sound less generic, try a different kit, or combine say the 808 snare with a different kit's hihats. Also it sounds to me there's too much reverb on the drums (and maybe even the whole mix) at times (- I think I make the same mistake too http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/mad.gif ).

Anyway, just my 2 cents, I'm no authority on this stuff http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif My music is at http://mp3.com/tomklepl. My jazziest pieces are "Timeless", "Wish Upon a Star" and "Vision in Blue" (which actually uses a midi mute trumpet too http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif). Some feedback (from anyone!) would be great.

Thanks very much for the feedback! Wow, it's been all over the map on this one! It's really funny, one of my engineer friends said EXACTLY the opposite of what you did, that everything was nice and fat, except for the wimpy thin Rhodes sound. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif So many ears, so many speakers... http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif

I do wish I could do more with that mute trumpet (Proteus 2000 patch), but that's the best I could get out of it. I'd kill for a live trumpeter... http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif

Incidentally, the generic 808 kit was completely on purpose, I was doing it sort of as an invisibile tribute to someone... http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Listening to Timeless now... I like an airier sound, so I don't mind reverb on the drums... http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif Man, this is a LOVELY piece!!!You get such great dimension, the meatiness of the bottom, combined with the sparse, leavened upper end. Great use of dynamics-as-coloring in that middle section... Only think I'd ask for in this would be maybe a little mroe concrete melodic theme in the chordal sections, to counterpoint that terrificly expressive piano...

Intoxicating piece, I'll be listening to more!

SWEET page treatment too! My compliments!

Hilarous! Maybe fat isn't the right word.. the rhodes just sounded really lush, warm and detailed to me. Is that a real rhodes? If not, what is it? I'm listening with Mackie HR824 monitors. But I think it's more of a personal opinion rather than differences in equipment.

I'm pretty sure I used a Proteus 2000 patch on my "Visions in Blue" song for the mute trumpet as well. It does a decent imitation but yeah, I'd love to have live trumpet on that song, it would really bring it to life.

Thanks Phil, very nice comments. I see what you mean about the melody - there isn't much of one http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif I actually had a friend sing on this tune (female) and it turned out quite nice considering the lyrics I wrote in a short time, and the short amount of time she had to practice. I don't have that version on my mp3 page though. Let me know what you think of other stuff if you can!

SWEET page treatment too! My compliments!

Thanks!!! My main gig is graphic design-I do a lot of web page design and multimedia work.

I would love feedback about the music and the brand new Ist web site.

The music is mostly Jazz and Fusion..all keyboard and midi generated on DP

This is still true and I have a new bunch of pieces..Any other jazzheads for mutual feedback???

Great main riff, catchy as hell. That timbre change at 3:25...are you mad, man? http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif I really like the part about 5:28, there's the basis for a whole completely different tune in those couple of measures, to my ears.

Just a question, HOw did make that lofi piano sound? (at the beginning of "I don't know") it sounds as if it were taken from a movie. Did you use some tape-saturating-stuff?.

Checkin it out now... Man, the mix is hotter than hell!!! almost jumped out of my seat!

Interesting concept... clean as a whistle, minimalist recording. d-kay,

That lofi piano sound was a modified patch (I think it was Wurly Piano) in my JP 8000 run mono through my SID Station's filter then into Pro Tools. The SID's filter can be extremely harsh (which I like) and loves to be overdriven. Thanks for listening!

JamFree is sounding great! I listened to Soiled Alms as well as Unless You Know. Obvious then and now differences (from listening off and on for the last couple of months) is that the new stuff and new mixes sound good over my shitty multimedia speakers whereas before I would listen with the Sennheisers to catch things. Acid monitoring test for such organic music- cheap boombox at an outdoor barbeque. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif

I've uploaded my first song tracked completely in my new recording software, Samplitude. Just a detuned Ovation-style guitar, a flower vase, a horseshoe, an Indian finger drum, vox and whistling, no synths or midi. The challenge was keeping the timbres in harmony with the other sounds on the album. The preceding piece is a DX-7 e-piano improv- a Rhodes eq'd dark would have made for a better transition, I'll have to write a segue.

Thanks for checking it out.

Fantastic...man, you got a great sound on the guitar...lately I can't play my guitar for more than 5 minutes before I have to detune it to something low.

Your voice is amazing, I wish I could get that kinda depth out of mine.

I've got a friend I met on the internet a couple of years ago...we've met in person and even recorded together...he lives in Santa Cruz, CA...anyway...I think you'll appreciate his music as much as I do.

Some samples of his music: His MP3c page and Besonic page

Especially the songs "Tarantula" and "Mind"

or check out our collaboration: http://www.besonic.com/pitchforkandnotesleb

Thanks for posting your new song...I really enjoyed listening.

Thanks Steve- wish I had your highs! Guess it's always that way. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif

Can't really remember exactly how I got the guitar tone, didn't pay much attention to the settings because I just wanted to lay down the improvised intro while the mood lasted.

I checked out your friend's stuff, I see he's in the Soquel suburb of SC, where I lived about '90-'92, cool. There's a great guitar teacher in the area by the name of Guy Cantwell, and a great music store (Musician's Trading Post? I was drinking a lot those days).

Anyway, I like this trippy stuff, it's perfect for this quite overcast Sunday morning, especially Come Down and Light of the Day from your collaboration site, and El Cochilla from the other site. Bernarda gives it the thumbs up for unique sounds, she's very down on presets and commercial samples, not from any technical viewpoint but from a musical ability to spot pre-fab or custom. I see on the B-Sonic site it's two takes to DCC, talk about custom.

heh, yep we should add to the description...Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Weed and sleep depravation http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/wink.gif...very integral parts of that weekend recording session.

It's especially cool that I met him on a BBS...the best thing about the internet is building relationships that work in real life http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif...

Llarion, listened to your Acid Jazz song, really sounds good, but I'm sure your tired of hearing about it , the trumpet needs to be more up front. All else is great!!! http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif I LOVE JAZZ !!!!!!!!!

Since I made that statement, I should tell you about myself.

I play by ear, and can't read music,(used to though)and own a studio.

I have around 100 songs on DAT right now that I play all of the instruments on. Keys, bass, 6-string guitar, drums, percussion, synths and drum machines that I program. I'm putting together my first Jazz CD. It needs some finishing touches and it should be ready to go, seems like it's never done. Actually I have around 900 songs that I have on cassettes, to which I plan on re-doing to DA88's in my studio when I get a chance, and as I need them. Unfortunately, I have a day job. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/mad.gif

I get into Smooth Jazz, Acid Jazz, Ambient, Abstract, R&B, Hip-Hop/Jazz. I have some clients that I do some Gospel tunes for to which I put the Jazz influence to, sounds cool, and moves you. I do a lot of demo's for clients, some of which I develop the tunes, and others they do.

I've had a pair of drumsticks in my hand when I was 7 yrs old. During the last 15 years I've played keys mostly. Bass is another love of mine. I can pump out songs in 3 hrs or less depending on the mode that I'm in, complete. I do my own graphics and art work for myself and others. I'm having a blast........don't want to leave the studio. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/cool.gif

One thing though, I'm clueless on getting my music on MP3, the way yours is set up. I would like to share my works with all. How do you go about doing it? This should be put on another thread, I guess.

CB, you are the man. A Little Island Off the Coast is a real treat. For me, it puts Angel of the Odd into a new context in that this is way further out, makes Angel sound like Tom Petty. The whistling is astonishing. I almost have a hard time believing it's not some custom synth patch.

Please keep posting this stuff. It makes sense.

Jazzman,

Thanks very much for the listen! I hear differing opinions on that trumpet part... It's on the strident side, so having it higher in the mix made for a more shrill overall sound... http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif

Cool!, btw ,what does a "overdriven filter" mean?. I know about resonance, & cutoff but that's not it , right?. Is it when you overdrive the signal before you send it to the filter?.

I refer it to an "overdriven filter" as one that has too hot a signal sent through it causing distortion. There is also some resonance happening there as well. The SID filter seems to be easily overloaded which I think is a good thing. It has it's own sound. I've been happy with just about anything I've run through it.

Thanks, John! My dad forbade whistling when I was kid, whistling being the sound of lost souls in hell and all http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/eek.gif so of course I practised my whistling chops quite a bit. The lost-souls whistling changes into wild tropical bird whistling at the end, so the little island off the coast is now one of the New World islands (like St. Vincent) runaway slaves escaped to and no longer one of the slave-market islands off the coast of Africa.

There is almost 6 minutes of instrumental transition from Angel of the Odd to Little Island- 30+ minutes of the album finished, another 30 to go, using a lot of segues to tie it all together.

I am very happy that you enjoy the piece, more to be posted but probably in bigger "in context" chunks.
