Oh cool, a lopey, low register whimsical guitar and bluesy piano. Love the honest, impromptu feel!!

JEEZUS, what I'd give for 1/10th of this guy's chops and ideas. I've liked every single thing I've heard, of many different styles. I thought I was a decent multi-instrumentalist, able to pass off my lack of expertise on any one axe because I can play 4 passably well.

Well, this dude humbles me in EVERY regard.

Such style, execution, and most importantly, SOUL. It reeks of musical and personal experience. It's out there in the REAL world.

GREAT sound. And he can SING!!!

Another winner, Steve!!!

Thanks Dave for your very perceptive comments. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif

Sysexguy (Psysexunit would be pretty moderne, dontcha think?) Hamadryad is very good, I didn't catch the link earlier.

Hm, I guess a lot of my perception of music comes from working with my hands, building furniture, guitars, cooking, and I percieve a lot of that passion in music that gets labelled "prog." People talk about technique and craftsmanship- I feel those terms are often misunderstood. It's about the ability and labor of love to be able to express yourself, the DIY ethic, appreciation and love of well-made and beautiful things and carving your soul into the world around you.

More William Morris than Sartre, which means good food and homebrew at band parties.

Anyway, Hamadryad rocks, especially in the three-dimensionalness of "The Second Round".

I see that Vitaly Menshikov has done a great review of them-

well congratulations on the recording, all the best to you,

Bobro, Dave...thanks!

I am overwhelmed at how prog is alive and the power of the internet when it comes to music outside the mainstream. While the suits pound the masses into submission with I-VIII-II progressions http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/wink.gif "la Resistance" covertly keeps the good stuff from disappearing (regardless of genre). So the message to anyone who isn't sure whether to follow their heart or follow their accountant is to go for it.

btw, the link is www.hamadryadmusic.com hamadryad was taken.

oh yes and, Bobro, thanks for the suggestion but my username is Sys-ex guy not Sy-sex guy (at least here, this is musicplayer not adult friend finder http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif ) LOL

Back to keyboards, here's a few tidbits about the keys on the album

- all keys were recorded as audio, not midi

- the organ was a C3 and was recorded to ADAT with 2 AT 4033's on top and a GT AM52 on the low rotor. The AT's were turned slightly off axis to control the growl of the moving air.

- the synth sound that closes "The Second Round, Part II" is not a synth at all. It is the main vocal, copied and processed with Wave Mechanics Pitchblender (a truly amazing plug-in that is somewhere on every cut)

- the synthish intro "eternal loop" is guitar feedback through three separate instances of Pitchblender. The tone that closes the intro before the pitch out (that sounds like guitar feedback) is a hot tea kettle resonating.

-the bass pedals are a pair of real Moog Taurus pedals. One of them had a B flat that wouldn't stay in tune that luckily was fixed with Wave Mechanics pitch doctor. FYI, Autotune claims that V3 now also will handle bass. We also had some clips and dirty pot noise that magically disappeared with the help of Amp Farm (a Bassman through "BIG cab").

-the Mellotrons were the Pinder CD through a ESI-32 + mucho plug-ins while the piano was a QS and the classical card in mono.

-a minimoog handled the synth solos while an XP-80 did all the pads and effects

All comments are most welcome.

Hi All!

I've got a new ReGurgiTron tune uploaded and online for your listening pleasure! It's called SlowGurg FizZ and you can hear it at:

http://www.mp3.com/regurgitron

The music features a JP-8000 and an Elektron SID Station (!) along with guitar and processed vocal sounds.

I normally don't like this style of music much but I did enjoy the sounds you used a lot.

f7sound

You're crazy man...love it.

arsenious

Have you listened to "UK" before? "Northern Woods" reminded me a lot of that band minus Bill Bruford.

On "Journey..." the contrast between the flute sound and the sound doubling the melody with it was really cool. The section at 2:08 is beautiful, I can hear a full orchestra playing an arrangement of that in my head...very nice.

Peace,

Steve

P.S.

I wrote more detailed reviews of these songs but because I hadn't put my user name in yet it all got erased...man I hate that about these forums.

Two tracks to choose from, both done on a Digi 001, using a range of gear / samples. I am only new at the Digi stuff so would dearly love some feedback (positive or negative)

Hi everyone!

I've got a new one. It's a video promo that's on my website. Audio was remixed and sweetened in Pro Tools. Video was edited in "iMovie2". Look under the "Now Showing" heading and give a look and listen. Quicktime is preferred because it looks and sounds better (about a 3 min download @ 56k).

I have two new ones up as well...

The first one, Woogman in de Jungle , is a good example of the sorts of things that go wrong when middle aged white guys try to get funky.

The second one, Tapdancer , was co-written with ex-Keyboard magazine columnist Connor "Freff" Cochran (his lyrics, my music). Listen carefully for those trombone parts...is it a synth? Or could it be... http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/eek.gif

Remember, no sucking up to the moderator...lemme know what you really think! I won't delete all of the negative posts... http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/wink.gif

Trombone, you say? I was going to pass given the Freff connection - sorry, but his columns would cure the worst case of insomnia - but I HAVE to check it out now! Did you post a photo of the trombone player, Dave?

'Fraid not, big guy...you'll just have to be content to hear her blow. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/wink.gifhttp://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Hey, Valky - thanks again for doing the part! How's the mix sound to ya? Yeah, yeah, I know, it's an MP3 'n all...

Macle,

Really cool tune! The very beginning reminded me of Elton John's song "Tonight", but then it took off in a whole other direction. Excellent playing, great arrangement, and some seriously tasty string arranging. I love the singer's voice, I dug the piano part, and I was very impressed by the instrumental break in the middle.

Plus, the mood of the music really seems to match the lyrics very well.

Outstanding work! Thanks for posting it!

Wow Dave, thank you very much! I love Elton John. His songs are pretty much the only ones I (can) play on the piano. Those early albums of his with all the orchestrations are just incredible. Thanks very much (and my girlfriend thanks you for the thumbs up on the vocal.)

Holy cow Dave! I just listened to Tapdancer and I'm almost speechless. Really incredible vocal performance... soul and fire mixed with excellent technique and timbre.

Do I smell "single" here?

Or maybe as part of a soundtrack for an "inspirational" movie... The kind that makes you feel "it's all gonna be ok"...

The lyrics had an interesting phrase that reminded me of something... some classic rhyme or poem perhaps? Deja Vu all over again...

I hope you don't get tired of me saying this...

YOU KEYBOARD GUYS ROCK!!!

plus the guitar tracks sounded perfect for the part... I love that edgy single coil snarl. A tele perhaps?

I'm still "guitplayer"!

My wife just walked in the room and asked me what that silly grin plastered on my face was for... did I dare tell her it's because I just listened to Woogman in the Jungle? From that first ...who who ha, who who ha ha... you had me... then that analog lead sound... mmmmmmm... was that ANDY talkin'?

Fat, Analog, Funky... If all "rap" songs had this kind of artistry and vocals behind them... well I'd be a rap fan. The background vocals are PERFECT for this part... almost over the edge... but not quite...

I loved the lead synth licks. great sound, not too "shrill" but nice and juicy... great feel on the bends... just like a guitplayer! http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

The whole thing just made me smile... like a good Disney song might... (absolutely meant as a compliment)... I just imagined Simba, Timone and Pumba boppin' along to this as they cruised their jungle territory...

(OK, I confess I've got a 5 and 7 year old and I've seen a LITTLE TOO MUCH DISNEY)...

another gem...

compared to your other new song... it's so different that the casual listener wouldn't even guess it was from the same artist.

as always I'm just a lil ole

My friend William can sing some - he's a very talented man. I'm very lucky to have been able to work with him.

I love that edgy single coil snarl. A tele perhaps?

Right manufacturer, wrong axe. American Strat. Tobacco burst with a rosewood fingerboard. Through the Pod.

then that analog lead sound... mmmmmmm... was that ANDY talkin'?

Nope. Andy is one of the two stacked sounds doing the bass (the juicy one). The other part of the bass tone is an MKS-80. They stack really nicely...the lead line is actually another one of my faves, a Wavestation. They just rule...

The background vocals are PERFECT for this part... almost over the edge... but not quite...

Yep - that's pretty much exactly where I was going...I had that really cool part in Thomas Dolby's "Hyperactive" in mind when I asked Michelle to sing that part. She sang it like exactly as it existed in my head when I wrote it - how often does that happen when you're trying to communicate a part to another musician?

compared to your other new song... it's so different that the casual listener wouldn't even guess it was from the same artist.

Wow - high praise indeed.

Thanks you for your kind words...once again, I encourage you to post a tidbit or two of your own!

Woogman in de Jungle

Well, at first I didn't like this tune but after listening to it again it started to grow on me a bit.

The keys are great, I'm just don't know about all the other stuff http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/wink.gif.

Tapdancer

I like this a lot.

Have you called Michael Bolton yet? Could be sittin on a gold mine here http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif

Nice piano sound and playing, I'll be listening to this song a few more times for sure.

  • 2 weeks later...

I recorded a vocal using my new Rode NT2 Friday night...we mixed the same night.

It's nice to hear the real sound of my voice for a change...the SM58 was a struggle for me.

Have a listen:

\"Unless You Know\"

I'm playing Rhodes and Guitars

Nick Jett (my 19 year old nephew) - Bass and Guitar

Tom LeBlanc - Drums

To Steve LeBlanc:

I like that fusion vibe. Reminds me of Return to Forever! Nice to hear a Real Rhodes!

Hard to tell with compressed files, but the mix seems to be a little clearer during the guitar solo.

The lead voice is very clear and up-front.

I like the way you guys play together (must be a family thing)!

Have Fun,

Rob

PS:

I know what you mean about upgrading your vocal mic. I just purchased a Rode NT-1 and a TubeMPpreamp (I was using a Radio Shack condensor), and I'll be using it on my next projects.

Keep up the good work!
