Dig My Rig--Let's see your setup!

Al, one thing I can say about that desk is it's solid, and heavy! Shipping on that puppy would be steep.

Yep, thx,- it´s not available here and seems to be Canada only when googling.

Staples search comes up w/ no results here.

Nonetheless, it is usefull watching this desk in detail for comparisons or modding/ building something similar.

thx again for the model name and pic !

Here's the latest incarnation...
That's a beautiful setup.

Too bad you have to have those monitors so close to the walls. That means they're not acting as near-field monitors.

Thanks.

They're actually about a foot & a half from the wall.

What can you do? When I renovated my basement, I needed a few more feet for the home theatre, so a little studio space got sacrificed.

The other end has a comfy loveseat for critical listening & snoozing.

Every bit helps, and that first foot and a half makes a big difference, but you really want them as far from the walls as possible, ideally closer to your ears than the walls.

When you have big mixing projects, I suggest you pull the desk out another foot or two if at all possible. In the marketing photo the desk looks like it's on wheels, which would be fantastic, making it really ideal for this situation. The baffles you have on the wall behind do help a lot, but only for mid and high frequenices.

But hey, a guy has to make sacrifices for the home theater!

Thanks for the advice LJ.

You may not be able to tell from the pics, but the Adam's are ported from the front, so I don't think they need to be "that" far away from the wall.

The corner foam is actually bass traps too.

What I said is true regardless of whether speakers are front-ported or not. The world's most perfect bass "trap" is no better than an open window to outside (assuming it's quiet out there ;-) ). They'd have no impact on reflections off the back wall, other than helping to reduce total reflections (which is indeed good).

The whole point of near-field monitoring is to reduce the effect of reflections, by making the distance from ear-to-speaker much smaller than any other (reflective) path. The effect is most dramatic in the first few feet and then gradually falls off until you hit the point where it's the room's resonance that is the issue and not the reflections per se.

Don't take my word for it, try it.

Another fun thing to do (whee) is to take an SPL meter. Play a sine wave, and move the SPL meter around near where your head would be when mixing. Try this with a number of different frequenices. I found it astonishing how much the SPL readings can vary (well over 12 dB), especially for low frequencies. With white or pink noise, it's not so bad, but that doesn't tell you as much.

I think that K2 might be missing the modulation controls to the left of the keyboard.

That's the MiniKorg 700, the original single-oscillator version. I played in a band back in the 70's and the guitar player had one of these - I used it to play synth bass on occasion. I loved it.

A few years ago, I bought a 700s two-oscillator version on ebay. It was a lot of fun - I played it for a year, and then sold it for about what I paid for it.

Here's my latest incarnation... the latest addition is the 27" iMac which runs Digital Performer and a number of software instruments. I mostly just entertain myself in my little studio here, although I occasionally take my Jupiter-50 out to various jam sessions. :)

These are the instruments I use the most. I just LOVE Roland's Supernatural acoustic and synth sounds. And I've been a Motif fan ever since I had the original model in 2002.

Here are my Moog Little Phatty (Tribute Edition) and Virus TI Polar, each of which I purchased when they were first released. These are two of the best synthesizers ever designed and built, IMHO.

And finally, my 27" iMac - 3.2 GHz quad core i5. I would love to replace the second monitor with a 27" thunderbolt display, but this works just fine for now.

Most excellent synth cave you have there Michael! :thu:

Thank you very much. I don't have a lot of equipment, but the keyboards I have at this point have been carefully chosen.

I often think that if I had the money, I would love to upgrade the J-50 to a J-80 and the MOX6 to a Motif XF7. But on the other hand, I love the portability of the two I have, when I do take them out.

This is my humble but efficient and powerful rig for the pop band that I play in, Who Is Louis:

Beneath the mixer is a RNC-1 compressor. It really, really brings out some punch in the Nord.

When in doubt, superimpose pentatonics.

Here's my updated rig, I had it set up for my Pink Floyd band rehearsal earlier this week. Hammond SK1-73, Roland FA08, Moog LP, in the rack is a power supply, line mixer with IEM's connected, EQ, and a midi patch bay. With my main (working) band I use the Hammond and Roland with the rack, no Moog.

I can reach it ok for sitting in this setup (I'm pretty tall). But, I wanted to be able to stand for most of this show, so I was up and down, depending on what I was playing most.

I didn't use a mixer for this show. We had 4 DIs going to the FOH system and a single keyboard monitor. The soundguy was fantastic and once we got levels, I didn't have to have him adjust anything. (He had a cool iPad app that he used to get basic levels, so he didn't have to be at the console.)

Since I seem to be having a lot of problems moving gear lately I spent the evening setting up a lightweight simple rig. Left arm/shoulder are killing me due to an old neck injury. The XK1c and the Kurz are going to go directly into the DXR 10's L/R second channel, and I am trying to use the link out in mono for a feed to the board. My only issue seems to be that If I punch the volume, I am going to really kick the foh. I have lowered the second tier on the 18880 and placed the Hammond back to clear the panel on the Kurz. I am still having an issue with my left shoulder and arm at that height. The Roc/Soc can get me up high enough to play organ only. We'll see how this goes. Soft cases are also in the plan.

This was for a one-off gig. My normal rig is usually a variation on this, without the Vortex or little instruments, and usually with the NE373, XS8, sometimes the Tetra is triggered by an RD600, and I frequently substitute a Triton Extreme 61 for either the JP-8000 or Ion. I also usually run the Tetra through some Moogerfoogers and an Eventide Space. I'll get a picture of how it usually looks later.

Left side: Kurzweil K2600. Below that, M-Audio Keystation 88es, Boss RT20 Leslie simulator on the floor. Rack: Mackie mixer, K2500R, misc., Digital Music MX-8 Patchbay. Center-right: M-Audio Axiom 61, and my previous main squeeze Alesis Fusion. Far Right: AX-Synth and a hand-carved djembe.

Both Kurzweils' KB3 organs are routed through the RT-20.

As a rule, I take the K2600 out for keyboard gigs, and the AX-Synth when I sub as a bassist.

This stuff takes up about 1/3 of my living room.
