Decided I wanted to spend some time making electronical-classical-orchrestra music for a change of pace and figured it would really allow me to get more familiar with soft synth and that side of Sonar. I got a dozen or so of these I'm working and tweakin, here's a couple. I imagine alot will find them somewhat boring. They seem to bring me alot of peace. FreeJazz Plus? Balls to the wall improv with no warm-up...so, there are some rough edges but overall a pretty good jam. Zane Musa - Alto Sax Steve LeBlanc - Rhodes Mike Uhler - Upright Acoustic Bass through SVT amp Tom LeBlanc - Drums This jam was 40 minutes long...I've edited it down for the web to 20 minutes...it flows pretty good this way, I removed a couple keyboard solos since there's already so much of that on the web and also cut some parts where the mix got weird. " Merry Xmas Every 1 " featuring Kristen Guldseth is an original Christmas song demo I made over ten years ago. Hopefully one day we can do it in a real studio with live musicians. Until then you might still want to download an mp3 for your Christmas playlist. This shouldn’t probably go under the “in your music any good” thread, as it’s not my music. But I’m too afraid of starting my own thread and no one replying. Like that old dream of going to school naked I guess. I run an ‘invitation only’ project studio part time. I’ve recorded choirs, orchestras, pop acts, hair bands, etc. I make it a habit of not recording the same act twice. Why? Because I can. My latest client is a Christian hard rock band along the same tone lines as Finch, Breaking Benjamin, with a little Linkin Park. I had never recorded this genre, but the singer’s lyrics had 87% less clichés than my last client had, was a really nice guy, and had some interesting songs worked up. I then immersed myself in the music of the genre to get a good idea what was ahead of me. The first session was a mess. While I was able to convince the drummer to buy new heads, the poor guy had no idea how to tune them. Even after the guitarist (!) and I worked on the kit, it was still a pressed board, no name kit that sounded like each of the $200 the drummer admitted he paid for it used. We made it through (later in post, the kick was replaced with a Sonor kick from the Drum Kit From Hell library), and to the drummer’s credit, he never complained once about playing to a click. Like I said, great guys. To be brief: Guitars: $200 Ibanez with a non-working humbucker and a single coil that seemed to always be on. An hour with a beat up DiMarzio from my garage and a soldering iron fixed that. Played into a Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier half. Decent amp, not my cup of tea. I’m so much more of a Plexi fan. The MB sounded way too scooped out and scratchy. Bass player: Extremely nice guy. $200 Ibanez bass (see the $200 trend yet? Me too) played into a $200 Fender bass amp. I also recorded it DI and eventually threw out the amp signal. I thought I could use the attack from the mic’d speaker, but it was better left on the cutting room floor. Recorded vocals (intense comping work done), and mixed. All in all, I feel like I recorded a true garage band. I almost felt like telling them that they’d be better off using my fee to instead replace instruments and amps, but I had my eye on a computer upgrade and a bunch of other stuff, so my greed superceded the advice. We just locked the final mix on song number 1 of 5. The rest will be completed in January. This was an early release as an Xmas present to their fans. The guitarist/singer/writer/band rep was over tonight and honestly, what he lacks in equipment or musical proficiency, he makes up for in vision. The guy had me remixing just to pull the vocals up ½ db during the bridge among a dozen other things. It was frustrating, but considering the alternative of myself being more invested in a good product than him, it could be much worse. Tonight was long, but I can’t fault him. I want everyone’s honest opinion on how it turned out. I did my best to make it radio ready, but my fear is that I can never cover up the fact that the band’s resources for instruments and amps weren’t what they could be. I’m haunted by the notion that I should’ve pressed the boys to rent a different snare. Oh well. The vocals, while not great, I’m convinced they’re as great as they could be. I just want the benefit of 20/20 hindsight before I finish the other 4 songs in the EP. Any advice? http://www.ambrosiaproductions.net/media/resistance.m3u

Hi, I can't believe this thread is still going. Amazing! Haven't been here in a long while, but thought I'd post a demo up. It's a very very rough mix, no EQ or effects or plugins or anything. http://www.nowhereradio.com/macle/singles Thanks a lot for any feedback. Hope you're all doing well, and have a Merry Christmas! macle

Post 2100... Wow. Reading and listening back through this is a real trip down memory lane. So many great songs... Seems like only a few people have been active here lately... but so goes the "tide". It was cool to see Macle post a song again... NICE! As always... ________________________ Here's a song I recorded yesterday. The Girl You Used To Be My original idea was to write a song for my wife for her birthday. We've been married for 17 years this week... and that's nearly half our lives. There was a special magic when we met and fell in love... neither of us had ever felt that before. The lyrics in this song were totally improvised in the moment of singing them. Sometimes you get lucky and a "stream" comes to you... I only meant to do a "scratch" track and harvest some vocal ideas... but after listening back to the track I decided to keep it all. I added a bit of double vocal lines and a acoustic melody part... but the rest is all first take. It ended up being a bit long... (sorry dial-up users)... When I played it for her yesterday, she cried... and hugged me for about 5 minutes when it was over. ;) So there's the lesson... if you want to make an impression on a loved one... write them an song from the heart. guitplayer

I'm still "guitplayer"!

I did however get one of the most awesome vocal sounds i have ever heard out of the 84 the other night, running it through a rather thin and bright sounding tube pre. You need to get one. ;) Did you decide on a mic? Oh damn, there i go getting off topic with my small attention span again. Well, did you? As for ribbons,I got a royer 122 as well and actually, if you are concerned about proximity, go for the 122 as it is way less of an issue, and that mic sounds incredible. Few more bucks though. Food for thought. I think royer makes a ribbon that can be made cardiod instead of fig 8 by puting a sheild on the back too. I'm all hyped on the ribbon mics as you can tell. :)

It was really driven by the need to complement my particular voice and this U195 seemed to do the trick. I was happy to go with a more aggressive rather than a rounder, natural sound It beat out a Brauner, Microteck Gefel , AT4033 and SM58 for the job. Re the ribbons: I was a bit spooked by the proximity issue (bad for my voice) and am also aware that you need to be careful with these beasts as the mechanical robustness of the ribbons is not like that of a condenser. However, I do recognize I have a mic weakness in the area of high frequency rich sources such as tambourines. I dont have a small condenser. I suspect the ribbon would be great for this stuff also. Maybe next time.
