Stokely
Immediately comes to mind... fantastic lyrics especially the 2nd verse with "fear is the heart of love"....In Catholic school, as vicious as Roman rule I got my knuckles bruised by a lady in black And I held my tongue as she told me, "Son Fear is the heart of love," so I never went back If Heaven and Hell decide that they both are satisfied Illuminate the "no"s on their vacancy signs If there's no one beside you when your soul embarks Then I'll follow you into the dark And in a similar folksy vein, this one always gets me...Love arrives safely with suitcase in tow Carrying with her the good things we know A reason to live and a reason to grow To trust, to hold, to care

BluMunk
Many great songs in this thread already. I'll humbly submit: Brothers in Arms - Dire Straits The Band Played Waltzing Matilda - (Eric Bogle, performed by Liam Clancy) One Step Up - Bruce Springsteen I don't know if it's quite "sad" or some sad-adjacent feeling, but I Think It's Going to Rain Today - Randy Newman And finally, if one looks just past the comedy of this show and Audrey's character, Somewhere That's Green from Little Shop of Horrors (by Alan Menken) is one of the greatest, saddest songs in musical theatre.

KenElevenShadows
This is easily one of the most haunting, emotional songs I've ever heard. "The official Mercy Street video. Inspired by the work of poet Anne Sexton, Mercy Street features on the first of Peter’s studio albums to have a proper title: So was a watershed release in his career. Its marriage of the artistic and the commercial made for an indisputable success, with the album quickly sitting atop the album charts on both sides of the Atlantic. Aside from some intriguing collaborations – with Laurie Anderson on This Is The Picture, Kate Bush on Don’t Give Up and Youssou N’Dour on In Your Eyes – it was the unity of singer, band and producer that made So such a crucial record in the Gabriel canon." 1 Quote Ken Lee Photography - photos and books Eleven Shadows ambient music The Mercury Seven-cool spacey music Linktree to various sites Instagram Nightaxians Video Podcast Eleven Shadows website Ken Lee Photography Pinterest Page

My wife and I saw Jesse perform this in a small club in Edmonton. It was just as beautiful there as it was in this performance. A sad song is my favorite musical dish. Two of my favorite sad songs are "I Can Let Go Now" by Michael McDonald and (the ultimate champ) "Kentucky Avenue" by Tom Waits. Waits' song is perfect and earns five hankies out of five. It has the power to elicit more tears than a video of a puppy-less black lab saving an orphan kitten from the jaws of a viper on the tenth floor of a burning building. JohnG11
A sad song? The saddest I know, I think, is by Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac - Man of the World, the original studio recording. It still haunts me, oh so many years on. And such economical guitar playing, haunting too. Shall I tell you about my life They say I'm a man of the world I've flown across every tide And I've seen lots of pretty girls I guess I've got everything I need I wouldn't ask for more And there's no one I'd rather be But I just wish that I'd never been born Break: And I need a good woman To make me feel like a good man should I don't say I'm a good man Oh, but I would be if I could I could tell you about my life And keep you amused I'm sure About all the times I've cried And how I don't want to be sad anymore And how I wish I was in love. https://youtu.be/lDGi0SZkgpI
