Pale
I never thought he would be on tour anywhere near this part of the world - but to my surprise he held a concert this Saturday 1km from my flat! There was no way I was going to miss Dr. John since he was one of my earliest role models and still one of my favourite piano players. I can still remember how I rewinded the tape with Such a night from Last Waltz concert over and over trying to pick his licks. I think it took me 10 days to manage to play the ending. I was only 14 back then, so bare with me Long story short - Dr.John is my hero. SO, I bought the tickets, and took the best position ever! Dr.John arrived with his Lower 911 band (bass, guitar, drums). He did a number on the guitar (nothing fancy), played some hammond (he's pretty good on the organ!), and mostly played the yamaha grand (just plain awesome). Here are a few pictures, sorry about the quality, it was dark and I only had my phone to take them with. Besides, I came to listen, not to take photos, but I just couldn't resist snaping a few shots: http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6009/5900349699_b46a3353a7.jpg IMAG0255 by Pale2011, on Flickr http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6020/5900912194_dbbfcecfe5.jpg IMAG0262 by Pale2011, on Flickr http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6017/5900347663_04ecc2c90b.jpg IMAG0267 by Pale2011, on Flickr http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6004/5900348883_b90c5d6101.jpg IMAG0272 by Pale2011, on Flickr At first the piano was way too quiet and I was afraid it was gonna remain that way, but fortunately they managed to get a decent sound after first 2-3 songs. The rest of the concert was just perfect. The bass and the drum where sooo tight, the guy on the bass was smokin'. The good doctor killed on the piano. They did a 90 minute show + an encore and I think it's the best concert I saw in a long while. Add to the fact it's f'in Dr.John and I had the front row view from where I could touch him if I wanted and you get one of the best concerts ever! My only beef is with the audience who applauded when guitar player had the solo, applauded when the drummer had the solo, but somehow missed 75% of Dr.John's solos, which is just insane - after all they all came to listen to Dr.John and the band. BUt still - best concert ever Custom handmade clocks: www.etsy.com/shop/ClockLight

RedKey
Looks like you had great seats!! Good for you! I saw him a few weeks ago play with the Meters & Alan Toussaint. It was fantastic. I had camera in hand and here are a few shots. http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/254398_10150228728069025_796559024_7066421_6168564_n.jpg http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/255598_10150228728214025_796559024_7066424_1774297_n.jpghttp://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/246803_10150228728174025_796559024_7066423_7334748_n.jpg http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/251333_10150228728259025_796559024_7066425_7253298_n.jpghttp://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/253568_10150228728309025_796559024_7066426_7751189_n.jpghttp://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/260253_10150228728114025_796559024_7066422_3624837_n.jpghttp://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/254568_10150228728024025_796559024_7066420_7624585_n.jpg

Pale
Hey RedKey, the piano setup in your pictures looks just the same as the setup on the concert I attended! THe whole "water on the left, skulls on the right" thing going on, it's all the same! Even the suit he's wearing is the same! Maybe that's his "gig suit" ;D Btw, Toussaint&Dr.John with Meters concert definitelly trumps my concert. I'm still happy I manage to see Dr.John since I thought that was never going to happen. Last few months were great for me (concert wise), saw Roger Waters, Joe COcker, Jamiroquai, Nick Cave with Grinderman, a few other less famous names and now Dr.John Now I'm waiting for Stevie Wonder to come somewhere near! HAMEGZ
Anybody remember the keyboard mag interview with the good doctor?(there may have been more than one). I think I remember him saying he was shot in the hand at an early age and that put an end to his guitar career. Legatoboy
To know Mack and his shows is to love him. The hoodoo do-do, they are very cool! Hard for audiences to get with piano sometimes, cultural conditioning, either that or maybe they just heard the piano as the main instrument and felt they had to give their do to the other players. Need 3 hypothesis for good scientific method ....they genuinely like the sound of the other instruments. Have to factor that in. What is Hip! Because if it was for him, you wouldn't get much sleep BTW, seeing Dr. John is a dream to me, Pale. Our American friends have so many talented folks around them all the time - but to see the hole New Orleans masters in Europe is not the easiest thing in the world. I still recall the Allen Tousaint/Elvis Costello w/the Crescent city horns concert, but Dr. John is another story! RedKey
slightly OT. Any of you know the complete lyrics to Desitively Bonnaroo? I've got about every third word, and he repeats himself a lot, but..
