Hi folks, I'm sorry that I haven't been able to participate in this thread thus far. I have ruefully slow internet access (28.8 on a good day), so it's going to take me a while to listen to all of your wonderful music. I DID have a chance to download Curve's Jus d'Orange song this weekend, and it's great, so I wanted to encourage you to check it out if you have not already done so. Curve-great song. Very catchy. I find myself chanting the lyric throughout the day. The interplay between the two vocalists is superb - it could not have been done better. I like that her French accent sounds more authentic than his, because it's as though he's struggling to communicate with her, which completely fits the scenario. I also like the tinge of desperation in the man's voice. You nailed the character. I have one small critique and one suggestion for an enhancement should you ever decide to remix it. The voices, as I said, are superb, and the music sounds fine, but you could use more interaction between background and foreground. Think of Thomas Dolby's 'She Blinded Me With Science'. The music works its way into the spaces between the vocal parts. You might be able to bring the background up a little and use a compressor to duck it when the voices are present. My other suggestion is to try some panning, artificial stereo, or other effects on the man's voice - not throughout the song, just here and there to add complexity to the mix. This is one of those 'try and see' ideas. It might work, it might sound like crap, but it's something to think about if you ever do a remix. Brilliant song, though. I can't get it out of my head.

Yo, Danno, that track has the same effect on everyone who hears it. It was originally a gag: "We're alone in my studio, the bar is well-stocked, you speak French, I have some recording gear, so let's have some fun before we hit the sack!" That was 2 years ago, and that track just won't go away. The version that you downloaded was recorded on a Tascam 424 4-track cassette machine, with the beats programmed on The Cheapest Drum Machine On The Market: the Alesis SR16. Both are gathering some nice blankets of dust somewhere. Props 2 ya for the advice - it WILL be heeded. I'm re-constructing that piece from scratch on my bumpin' new gear, and with a new female vocalist (she's on page 98 of this month's Philadelphia Style mag) but I'm mindful of how that lo-tech sound worked so well for that piece, and I don't wanna lose that, so I'm really gonna take my time widdit.
Originally posted by Curve Dominant: It was originally a gag...
Yeah, a lot of things in life start out that way. But really, it's an awesome tune. I hope you can give it the full treatment. If at all possible, I would try to lift the vocals off of the original and reorchestrate the background music. You're never gonna hit the bullseye quite like you did that first time. Dov'e la donna adesso? E ancora una amica? Ha parlato molto bene il francese!

Yo, Danno - I'll hit the bull's eye sharper than ever, bro, worry ya self not, 'cause I got your insight on how it should come off - and I got half a mind ta credit ya on the CD sleeve jus' fa that. >>I like that her French accent sounds more authentic than his, because it's as though he's struggling to communicate with her, which completely fits the scenario. I also like the tinge of desperation in the man's voice. That's my stage direction. I can maintain that conflict - and there's no action without conflict, as The Bard says. Plus: my new female vocalist is more fluent in French than the one ya heard. It's the groove that I'm gonna intensify my efforts on. Once I get the groove liquidly phatty and propellant, the rest will fall into place effortlessly. The script is perfected, so the staging must be set. Piano piano si vacha l'antanno. Ciao bello.

Yo Massimo, come stai amico. Si, finito dello studio, molto phat. I dunno about questa estate, I'm SO busy. Eventually I'm gonna drop in on ya, tho. Grazie tante, chi centiammo domo. Send me a mix and I'll put some vocals on it. I'm working with a new female singer and she's da bomb. Whassup Danno! Everyt'ing cool? Thanks again for that feedback on "Jus D'orange Ou Pamplamousse." That's gonna be a hit, baybay! www.mp3.com/TransluxTheater

Musically, it feels a bit like pop, but sonically it has a nice hard edge that makes it rock out! I liked the mix - during the break, where the distorted guitar mixed with the vocals, created a hybrid sound that is more than the sum of the parts (exactly what a mix ought to do...) philbo www.mp3.com/tangent

Since this is my first post to this forum, I would first like to thank Craig for his many years of writing on the subject of music and technology. Craig, I won't say how long ago I first became aware of your contributions, but I can assure you that I have benefited greatly from your work. Much thanks. I am an artist/producer who established my own record label; www.oddballmusicworks.com . I released a cd of my own material, "Darkness in the Heart of Your Soul", in late 1999. I would like to submit a tune " Take Me Higher ", off this cd. It is an mp3; if you would like to check out any more tunes off the cd, please go to www.oddballmusicworks.com/mp3_files.htm . David Thomas Peacock, Very interesting. It wants to be Robert Plant circa 1985, and then almost becomes fusion with an edge. I love the horn break. So unexpected. Everbody does things dry as hell these days, and it was kinda cool to hear ALL THAT VERB. I'll check out your site soon. Frank http://www.mp3.com/spigots

Ok. I've been reading this board, The DUC, DAW-MAC, etc, etc. making notes on all the mix ideas, tricks etc. So, I reloaded a tune I recorded and mixed last fall, and started from scratch. Concentrated on subtractive EQ, giving things more space, compression techniques, nudging tracks for better phase alignment, and working in any and all suggestions I've picked up recently on the web. The result is here: http://www.mp3.com/spigots The tune is superglue (mp3edit). I'd love to hear some feedback. I'm still no mix god, but there IS a definite improvement over anything else on the page. And along those lines, I spent some time with a broadband connection and realplayer, listening to alot of the stuff from this thread: Macle96: Production is wonderful. Joke is my fave. Personally I'd like to hear more GTR, but I'm a GTR fan. Great song, Great hook. "This Way to the Future"- G. Harrison father's Slade's lovechild with Shirley Manson as surrogate? At first I thought the production wasn't up to "Joke"'s, but about 1/2 way through, I realized thet it fit the song perfectly. "This Sucks"- I liked the agressive vocal. All 3 sound like you spent alot of time on them. Well done. Wondercrush: Great ideas, a little sloppy in their execution Curve Dominant: "Jus D'orange..." is so catchy. I've heard it once, and it still jumps back into my head. Chip McDonald: Nice GTR sounds. "Languid Shell Beach" was my favorite. I heard a distant Al Stewart (Year of the Cat era) influence. "Majestic 12" is a perfect tune for the i-tunes "visuals" interface. David Bryce: Solid stuff. I liked Balthazar the best. The last minute was very exciting. Bobbyk: Cowboy music needs a revival!!! I loved "Freight Train Blues" but am still uncertain if this is a joke or not. Listened with tongue planted firmly in cheek. Nice "chickin' pickin'" guitar. Tom Aragon: How in the hell do you turn out sooo much stuff? Of all the songs I listened to, "Ritual 4:05" was my fave. Great tribal groove. And how in the world do you earn over $30k at mp3.com? Steve Thompson: Well recorded. "Is it Any Wonder" is so GFR, straight off of E. Pluribus Unim. And how did you get a 64.7 kbps Real Audio file to sound so good? Coaster: "I Can't Breathe" is quite haunting. I'd dry up the track, though. Having fun on a slow day, Frank

Intro reminds me of .... frick, there's a recent top then tune where the guy ends up sounding like he's having a fit "ah eee ahhh eeh ahee ah ah" is the hook, , uhm.. Oh well... Sounds "new". I liked the oblique harmony vocal stuff, nice arrangement.... when it opens up it reminds me of a tun by a Christian group... uhmm.. frick, I can't remember their name either... Uhm... DC Talk, yeah... I liked all of the various guitar treatments. Curiously, around about '88 I was in a grunge band with a rather angst ridden female singer that did an original song called "Superglue", but nothing became of it... ack. Chip McDonald: Nice GTR sounds. "Languid Shell Beach" was my favorite. I heard a distant Al Stewart (Year of the Cat era) influence. Nothing has become of that stuff as well, so I'm dumping all of that; no one apparently knows what kind of music it is and I don't know what to do with it, a waste of time apparently. It was recorded poorly anyhow. http://www.mp3.com/chipmcdonald This message has been edited by Chip McDonald on 03-24-2001 at 11:54 PM

Frank, Thanks for listening! I'll have to find out how the transition to real audio went so smoothly. I'm not with the band any longer (6 hours of driving for rehearsals twice a week plus the non-rehearsal activities) but I did manage to rekindle my interest in my little ol' home studio. Got rid of the Soundscape Elite card and replaced it with a much better system. and I'm going crazy with the J-Station. Managed to dig out and "remaster" some older material for mp3.com Listening/learning a lot as I play along. Any/all tips welcome! (I'm limping along at 28.8 here so superglue_mp3edit_ will be here in 11.2 minutes...) Steve
Originally posted by spigots: Steve Thompson: Well recorded. Having fun on a slow day, Frank
The material on both of my sites spans the last 10 years so in that respect it really isn't a lot. I've done over 40 Internet collaborations on the Net so that has helped to spread the word around. About one fourth of them are on my sites and the others are scattered around several other MP3.com sites of the collaborationg artists. I think in order to do reasonably well there, it's important to time when you do things. Certain days to release tracks, trying new graphics, changing song order, exploring genre placement, shmoozing a bit on the various bulletin boards and of course.......plain old luck really helps I think if an artist, no matter how great their material is, doesn't continually roll with the multitude of changes over there, they will just drop out of site from the public view, making it a virtually impossible for anyone to find you. I have a lot of artist friends there who are absolutely fantastic but have dropped into obscurity simply because they never changed anything on their sites. They just put the material up and hoped for the best. You have to change in order to survive. by the way.......I've heard a lot of great music on this thread. I was thinking of doing a version of Joke with just guitars, and no fluff. I listened to Superglue. I downloaded the MP3, and it sounds WAY WAY better than the lo-fi play. Really great guitars, real powerful. How did you record them? The FXs you did are also really very cool, the panning and stuff, and the bits that happen when you go into the chorus, etc. The only thing I would say to change, maybe, would be to turn the vocal up. I've got a new one up, btw, and I'd love some feedback, from anyone and everyone. It's called It All Comes Down To The Trip Your On. http://angelfire.lycos.com/rock2/3songs Thanks again, macle

robotobon@home.com - Angel Eyes Hey! Don't hide the vocals. The level is pretty much okay on peaks, but I'd recommend some compression to bring up the lower level parts, as well as the "human voice" artifacts. The guitar stuff is way cool. I'd like to see a better connection between the intro and the beginning of the song; I understand you were probably trying for a "Disconnect" type of effect, but it's just a little TOO disconnected for my taste. Toward the end, a little more doubling on the vocal, with processing added to the double, would help sustain interest. Good job, though, something different is always welcome.

Well I guess I might as well toss something into the fray... some of you have heard this already, but here's a cut from a live recording that I did of a local "twisted pop" band called Orange Hat. No autotuning! No editing! No soundreplacement! Not even any overdubbing! Pretty much a nice live mix Lee. You did a great job on everything, could hear all the parts crystal clear. The drum kit sounds real good except for me, that last part, the cymbals were a bit too strong for my taste but know it's pretty much ok in the context of that particular music. I take it you did this on that Yamaha DAW you're always got info about. You got me interested in that puppy. It's a nice sounding box. Hope to hear more in the future. ------------------ William F.
