Help get Lachey Doley to the USA

Recommended Posts

well folks, some of you asked for another Lachey Doley thread and so here you are.  I have been corresponding with him via email for almost a decade, in fact I'm the one who told him

about this forum when he asked me how I had heard of his music many years ago.  Markyboard and I went and saw him the last time he was here in the USA, 5 or 6 years ago I'm

guessing, I lose track of the years, the pandemic made it (keeping track of the years) worse.  Can't wait to read the comments on this. :D

Oh for sure, if he comes close to Boston, I'd go see him.

And I'll humbly admit I made a comment about his "antics" in the "Gimme Some Lovin" post that I'd started -- which was supposed to draw attention to his creative use of the Hammond drawbars (but quickly went sideways) -- and then this weekend, I saw an old video of Keith Emerson stabbing a Hammond with a Hitler Youth Knife.

Hmmm.... I haven't see his antics taken to task here......................................

Anyway -- YES -- please encourage Lachy to do an East & West Coast U.S. tour.

I have no clue who this Lachey guy is yes I watch a few of his Youtubes but if he's that popular he should be able to put together is own little tour without crowd sourcing.    He should watch some of bass player Janek Gwizdala videos and Janek talks about how he's  put together small tours on his own and built his fan base in the process.    Janek first did solo tours playing small clubs and even at people homes.  Today Janck is still booking his own tours with a small band and playing clubs.    Janck video shows it is a lot of work to do this but it can be done.

This Lachey guy trying to crowd fund two shows isn't going to do much for  building a fanbase.  He should look at doing a handful of shows around the US in small clubs and let word of mouth do the rest.

If LA and New York are the 2 options. I’ll drive from MA down to New York to see him. I doubt I’ll be flying to Australia anytime soon.  Hopefully he ships his Castle bar (sp?)  Clavinet over.  That looks a lot more fun then when I use the pitch stick on my Nord 🙂

Crowd sourcing is how a relatively little known act that has built a notable but not massive following through social media and domestic gigs gets a high quality record made and an oversees tour going.  Participate or not - it’s a more viable path to moving a step up in the music business than say - an A&R guy from a big record label fronting you tons of cash to become a horse in their stable.

Fans will go for it.  If not a fan, don’t fund it.  Basically the same as kickstarter for hardware and software developers.

Yeah, it's always confounded me how often our guidepost seems to be, "We'll only help you if you don't need it." How else should he pay for the trip other than having fans "vote" through their contributions on whether he should come at all? If he was held aloft by some rich benefactor, would that make him more or less credible? The answer is "less," in my mind, having seen lots of acts that only exist on a certain level because of someone writing checks that buy what most people have to build. But to each their own...

If you don't have the fans then who's going to buy crowdsourcing tickets.    Whole thing is about getting exposure even if on a shoestring scale.   As I pointed out Janek Gwizdala did it starting doing small solo tours in Europe and now enough following to bring a band with him.   Reading the posts above I thought Adam Neely and his band Stargazer doing similar thing doing shoestring budget tours they book themselves.   Musicians have been doing taking chances and just getting out there to build name recognition.   Maybe he'd be better off trying to pick gig as opening act for name artist on tour in the States.   That would help build the name recognition to start a smaller tour under his own name.   I just think this crowdsource two shows in long run is only going to bring in people who already know him and now create new fans he needs.

That might be true. Though if that's the people funding the trip through crowdsourcing donations, that seems fine too. He'll gain *some* new fans that way, you'd think, and gets to do a little tapping of the US market.

Now here's the fun part a lot of people don't know: opening slots don't work like they used to. They are sold to what they call 'baby bands' or other acts with the money for it in order to defray the cost of the tour. You pay by the number of dates you do. Some kids fork out 20 grand plus their own bus/travel to say they opened for a particular artist. I have yet to see any of them really do more after that. There are still some old school opener slots, but they are rare.

Anyway, the point is it would cost more for him to buy onto a tour, than it would to just fly here and play for an empty room.

I also (separate topic) think there's a difference between "touring" and "traveling to play music." I have lots of friends who talking about "touring," but what they really mean is that they voluntarily planned a road trip and booked gigs along the way. It's sort of a "tour" in a sense, but the supply/demand is reversed from a "real" tour. I was politely let go from a band when I refused to pay my way over to and around England to "tour" with them. But yeah, no. I can play to empty rooms right here in my neighborhood for $10k less...

I didn't realize the KC family was so generous.

Now I know where to crowd source when I decide to make a porno movie starring a Taylor Swift lookalike.😎

You don't need a lookalike. I do deepfakes with AI for work. Just send me a script. :)
