Toto appreciation thread

Decent pop music, stupid name. Just like Ensoniq's Fizmo is an innovative synth with a stupid name. In both cases, because of the names, I didn't take either seriously even if it wasn't justified.

Toto XIV is almost here! Couple more months!...

The songs sound amazing, even if it's just an EPK...

Yeah. They give me hope that real music by real musicians is not dead. Sadly, I predict that we may find that only true Toto fans will buy it. I really hope I'm wrong and would love to see it chart and win awards ... I'll be praying!

DX1 in the studio! :o:cool:

I'm pretty sure I spotted a PolyFusion modular somewhere in that video too. Then again, it's Steve Porcaro. Of course, he's gonna have some serious toys in the studio!

There was a PX-5S in the studio as well

Loved the debut album. Toto and Journey were major in spurring the AOR movement. I never enjoyed the next two releases and Toto IV feels like a different group putting out two hits and some filler. Gave up on them after that.

Wow. I have to take exception to that. That particular record kind of changed my life. The only turkey/filler on that record for me was "Africa." Still can not bear that song, and I don't understand why it's one of their greatest hits.

I love David Paich's compositions - he writes really sweet chord progressions. "Child's Anthem", "Make Believe"...

"Waiting For Your Love" is actually my favorite track off of the IV album! That impeccable Jeff Porcaro shuffle helps...

He's written some great (and pretty easy to recognize as his) tunes for others as well, like a track called "Wait" on the Victory album by the Jacksons.

I've also always liked Steve Porcaro's "Takin' It Back" and "It's A Feeling".

I love their whole catalog, but if I had to pick three of my top favorite Toto albums, they'd be:

Mindfields ("Melanie" = another hauntingly beautiful Steve Lukather ballad, also really like "Spanish Steps" [Japanese bonus track, standard track on the U.S. issue], and the title cut is epic too."

Fahrenheit (My all-time favorite Steve Porcaro composition resides on this album--"Lea")

Toto IV (Especially love the chord progressions on "Make Believe)

Something up in the band, just announced on FB yesterday Carlock not on the road in 2015 and Shannon back. Not story told last year, so we will see if this is permanent. Hearing rumours but I'm sure truth will be told soon.

That's a year ago. Maybe this is permanent / Keith studio not live. Somehow I doubt it. This band needs a full time drummer.

I understand that people have different taste, but even if I hated it - AfrIca was deservedly a huge hit. I love singing and playing it. It's brilliant.

Maybe that's what I need to do, drink the kool-aid and learn the damn song. Maybe that'll turn me around.

The rest of the album, though, fucking great.

I've been a fan of these guys ever since Toto 1. They're simply an unbeatable force whether they're doing pop or delving headlong into prog rock. Impeccable style, panache and that groove they pull off. Have to get their entire catalog this year.

Quick edit: I might have to embargo their stuff after I get it. I intend to do the composing thing this year, and Toto is one of those groups who seem to infect my Muse. Most annoying...

This keyboard solo has obviously been tampered with!

It took me a couple of listens to get into their earlier stuff before Toto IV. The first Toto album that really got me into them was The Seventh One, which I still enjoy to this day, I just really liked Joe's voice (still do,) It took a month or two for Bobby's voice and style to really grow on me, but yeah, he was a great vocalist for the band, he seemed to have more of a soulful sound. But anyway, the keyboard work on all of their albums, especially TSO, floored me.

I think you may be only person in the world who doesn't like that song. :) To each his own (I guess).

I think I posted this here before, but "Africa" almost didn't make the album. This interview has some great back-story info, including where the lyric "I bless the rains" came from:
