  1. There have been some some strong opinions in this thread. Erick's post quoted here is a good reminder of the virtue of the diversity of our forum members. His fun is quite the opposite of my fun but I 100% respect his fun, and the forum is better for having a population of keyboard players with different skills and interests.
  2. This thread reminds me of the band Umphrey's McGee and their "Headphones and Snowcones" program. Basically, a limited number of audience members can rent In Ear Monitors from the band at their shows and listen to the performance through a wireless feed from the soundboard. Pretty cool. https://www.umphreys.com/tour/headphones-snowcones/
  3. While flipping through a big box hardware store weekly ad, I saw a folding miter saw stand and wondered if it might make a good keyboard stand. Here are photos of a two different models, both well under $100. Has anyone tried this, as an alternative to more expensive keyboard "table" stands? Have I uncovered a "life hack" or is there something obvious I'm overlooking as to why not to trust a keyboard on one of these?
  4. I'm in the camp that will play horn parts using an organic keyboard sound... usually Hammond, occasionally synth brass, never ROMpler brass
  5. I don't have the RetroFlyer but had Avion rebuild my suitcase preamp and they did a great job.
  6. That sounds about right to me as "fair market value" in the U.S. It wouldn't surprise me if some sellers are getting $2k, though. Sounds like a lot of money for an old Leslie but look at how expensive the new ones are, and 2k starts looking attractive in perspective. There are always stories of people getting deals/steals on old Hammonds and Leslies but those stories usually involve luck and/or patience.
  7. Like many of us, I track a lot of used gear outlets. Anecdotally, I'm noticing a modest uptick in people selling keyboards... especially mid-tier keyboards ($500-$900 Yamahas, Rolands, Kawais, etc.). I am making a bold prediction that this is the beginning of people selling off their pandemic impulse purchases ("I'm going to learn to play piano during lockdown!"). Combine that with some loosening of supply chains and some recession fears... I'm calling my shot... used gear prices are going to start trending down!
  8. Yes! This is on my Mt. Rushmore of pop/dance tunes... hence my greater interest than usual in giving it the respect and authenticity it deserves.
  9. Awesome! And shame on my YouTube searching skills for not finding this. Thanks!
  10. Thanks. Some good ideas and voicings to borrow here. And she's playing on a clonewheel no less!
  11. I think you definitely could ask (and get $400). I'm no expert but I was opining for the OP that $350 is a good used price for a buyer these days. A bargain even! Many used sellers are asking $500+ for the ES110 and similar Yamaha, Roland, etc.
  12. I'm playing in original A flat (female singer). I've transcribed the chords of the tune and the main licks/motifs. I get by on that but really want to figure out what the piano player is doing because I think it had an understated way of filling out the harmony
  13. For example, in the intro I think I'm hearing the piano harmonize the main riff but I'm not sure. All other instruments seem to be playing just the single note line
  14. Five piece: Guitar, bass, drums, keys, sax. I'm mostly trying to play just the original piano part
  15. Requesting advice, chart, tips, etc. on this great tune. Learning it for the first time. The piano is pretty low in the mix, so I'm struggling to pick out the nuances of the keys part. And I'm also debating whether to try to cover the strings. This is for a standard cover band situation. Don't need to be perfect but I love this song and want to do it justice.
  16. ES110 is a solid choice. $350 is a good price in this crazy inflation environment.
  17. Yes, and last time I priced them, a few of these options were less expensive than this new entrant to the market
  18. I'll be devil's advocate and suggest spending LESS than $1000, not more. It doesn't sound like the objective is to have a pro quality instrument. It sounds like the objective is to have a respectable slab piano that can take some abuse. Something that's "good enough" for musicians who don't bring their own board for whatever reason. At this moment in time, the buying opportunity is the close out on the Kawai ES110 -- down to $699 from 899. Another plus: in its price range, I think the ES110 is generally thought to have the best action, relative to its Yamaha, Roland, etc. competitors.
  19. I recall there was also a marketing issue. Confusion as to the relationship between the KingKorg and the wildly popular MicroKorg. When the KK was released, I remember being confused as to whether it was just a MicroKorg repackaged in a larger keyboard. I'm now pretty sure the KK contains upgraded software over the MK but I'm still not sure if it is an incremental or transformational upgrade. I haven't spent much time researching it -- I'm sure someone on the forum could provide details -- but that's not the point of my comment. My point is: I'm definitely in the demographic Korg should be pitching this too, and it got lost for me amongst its competitors because the rollout was confusing (to me). It was only when the Snarky Puppy Lingus video went viral that I remember saying to myself, "hey, give that KK another look."
  20. As a dark horse suggestion, consider the Roland VR09. It isn't as sophisticated a synth as other suggestions in this thread but it is surprisingly powerful, and it seems like you may not want to delve into the more sophisticated features of these other synths anyway. Also, it has the benefit of being a backup to other parts of your rig (clonewheel, etc.). I bought a VR09 after the advice in this thread:
  21. My engagement with GC has morphed slowly from in-person retailer to eBay/Reverb competitor for online used purchases. Can't remember the last time I purchased something new (i.e., unused) from them. Can't remember the last time I purchased something in person from them. My local GC's keyboard room is embarrassingly empty.
  22. So unsettling to read a thread in which "Nord Lead" is mentioned unironically
  23. Classic jam band keyboard rig
