I'll be devil's advocate and suggest spending LESS than $1000, not more. It doesn't sound like the objective is to have a pro quality instrument. It sounds like the objective is to have a respectable slab piano that can take some abuse. Something that's "good enough" for musicians who don't bring their own board for whatever reason.
At this moment in time, the buying opportunity is the close out on the Kawai ES110 -- down to $699 from 899. Another plus: in its price range, I think the ES110 is generally thought to have the best action, relative to its Yamaha, Roland, etc. competitors.
