  1. for me the striking thing is that the eq curve and tone just sounds more pleasing on the legend, sounds warmer and fatter. the yc can sound a bit honky when you activate the sim, i guess you could tweak that usng the built-in parametric eq to taste, but I've only got as far as comparing using default settings so far.
  2. no, that's not what I was saying, however, unsurprisingly the legend wins when rotary is on, but surprisingly the yc takes it when rotary is off, for those of you that might be into the DI sound.
  3. Just thought you might enjoy a shot of these two beauties together! I'm comparing the organ sound, but the YC would make a nice top board for rhodes. It's balanced precariously on the top of the Legend and some boxes on the window sill. What could... Now will someone tell sweden that it's supposed to be spring?
  4. so i read all of your posts and took all the advice onboard, and then went and bought something that nobody suggested. nevertheless, i'm totally satisfied with it and it didn't break the bank, although I almost broke the amp... (spoller) sorry for posting my own s**t but wanted to conclude the discussion you all contributed to, thanks!. Hoping perhaps some others find this video helpful. [video:youtube]
  5. yeah, amazing video and all, but that funk jam, just wow!
  6. This is fantastic! Are there forum threads or other resources where you describe how you made this Hammond "shell"? I'd love to learn more about it. Weight, etc. Since you asked nicely, here's a video I uploaded today! [video:youtube]
  7. so much good stuff here, thank you! I was researching this topic for a video idea, so will read carefully when I start preparing the script. One comment jumped out at me though, I was missing something quite obvious, there is no need for keyboards & synths to have multiple manuals, when we can instead just stack them above each other in whatever configuration we want. Much more flexible, portable and probably affordable. super thrilled with all the responses, and now i need to know i need to do some reading up on classical pipe organs!
  8. No, not instruction manuals but the multiple keyboards. I've been pondering this topic for a while. Hammond organs have two manuals, which I suppose is inherited from the classical pipe organs it was attempting to imitate. But why did pipe organs evolve like this in the beginning? Furthermore all types of organs have multiple manuals as a standard feature. Why did this not catch on with other electromechanical keyboards, synths, or even pianos? Wouldn't dual manuals be a fine feature on other keyboard instruments for playing two sounds? I know there are a few rare dual manual synths, but it seems it failed to catch on. Why is it a requirement for organ, but for everything else we make do with a single sound or keyboard splits? One can also question why pedal bass is only used with organs when they would be equally applicable for keyboards or piano. Imagine that! Many questions, love to hear your thoughts.
  9. i will definitely pull out my old mic100 then! good to hear that, lots of great recommendations here thanks. I must add that there is nothing to complain about the legends overdrive sim, there are tube and solid state models, it's just I was looking for something interesting to use when demonstrating the fx loop, since I've never had a keyboard with that feature before
  10. don't have a fix, but it's definitely an issue that doesn't get mentioned much, which I find strange that not more people run into it. I multi-tracked a Moog subphatty, USB cable from PC to Moog to transmit midi whilst synth audio is captured on USB audio interface. That grungy, whiny, humming interference really added up when playing back 6 recorded tracks. Next time I run into this I will sacrifice a USB cable by slicing it open and cutting the ground wire, maybe that will fix it on the cheap.
  11. Thanks, some good food for thought there. Speakeasy! that's a blast from the past! Tube screamer came to mind for me too, and the OCD, and I can always use on my guitars too! One thing we need to keep in mind is that the SEND and RETURN on the Legend is line level, not guitar level. I could even run it into an audio interface and Guitar Rig... I have an old Behringer tube preamp that I will try, but that one never sounded all that great on Rhodes, but might just work in this application. A bit of an outsider, but the Elektron Analog Heat has several analog overdrive circuits, no tube, but designed for synths and drum machines. Pricey tho and I think I'd prefer a good old pedal.
  12. Hi, Got one of these fabulous instruments to enjoy for a while One interesting feature of the Legend is the FX send, to add an insert effect, pre rotary simulation. I was thinking it would be an interesting experiment to plugin an overdrive pedal or effects unit, maybe something with a real tube preamp, to get more control and a different flavour to the drive and distortion. Any suggestions? thanks!
  13. it looks cool like that, keyboard equivalent of a relic, it's sure to have better tone...
  14. i played it during the launch event and was impressed. I was even honoured to meet with the lead engineer flown over from Japan who was very passionate about the work they had put into designing their best ever synth action. he was especially keen to point out how long the keys are to the pivot, showing me on the case the distance that they extended back. i agree with him, the keys felt great to play further back and was impressed to see Roland paying attention to this. it was a noisy venue( abbey road studio 2!) but the keys felt exceptionally smooth and nice to play. looking forward to my next opportunity to play one!
  15. excellent idea to use an old electone as a cheap and rather authentic controller, that had never occurred to me! Edit - Second thoughts , after checking some images, the manuals are less than 5 octaves and not lined up with each other... won't be possible to play lower manual bass and comp properly.
  16. you'll also need the scanner interface board that provides usb or midi outputs, as shown here. it makes a huge difference to the feel of a keybed when you remove from a flimsy plastic case and mount to a 3/4" sheet of MDF. If you're feeling adventurous and want to achieve the correct layout of the manuals and have them feeling solid, then this is the way to go! I did eventually convert this rig into two fatar keybeds + electro rack but can't find any photos of that and don't remember why I did it either.
  17. that's a great point scott, also the upper board should not have too much depth below the keys. not sure if I shared this before, but here's what I did with an Electro and fatar keybed, so you can see what we mean...
  18. I'm thinking along similar lines to you, except considering VST on PC, or building some lower manual for Yamaha YC. don't want to be a downer, but I've not found a satisfactory solution. There is none currently (except for GSI controller). before you invest & buy anything, you might ask yourself how good the overall experience is to play hammond organ on an ipad and a pair of flimsy plastic cheap feeling midi controllers (they all are). maybe you can get lucky and find some used 90s studiologic fatar controllers, the plastic cases are awful but the keybeds are decent once you rip them out and install into a sturdy DIY wooden organ cabinet, i've done this before. I think this is the only way to get any kind of satisfactory experience. I've reached out to distributors about buying the waterfall fatar action, however once you add scanner boards and a parir of keybeds it's getting way up there in price. plus very limited availabilty at the moment. then all the time to build the cabinet and mount the keybeds and electronices. you might enjoy that kind of thing though, I do, but it's expensive. might be better off to just save up for a Mojo Classic or similar, you'll probably eventually do that anyway if you get hooked. Less messing around = more time playing.
  19. join the discussion on their live stream right now, entertaining stuff, kudos to reason studios for their engagement and openness with their community, it's rather unique. it's fascinating to see and hear the guys behind the daw.
  20. the thumps were some of the speakers high on the list, but yeah, i feel they are too bulky and overkill! currently leaning towards the alto ts310 or ts308 (10" and 8" respectively) altos mid range offerings. or maybe even the cheaper yamahas as recommended here! the sub + satellite route is tempting and good for space saving, but for rotary sim, I think you won't get the full stereo effect, since all the bass is routed to one mono subwoofer, so you won't get the bass rotor thrown between the speakers, you'll only get the horn through the stereo satellites. interesting to think about that. thanks so much for all the advice, fascinating reading and insights.
  21. btw, Analogaddict, didn't we meet many years ago (20 perhaps)? I think it was you that sold me a NE2 rack, I played your clav, CP80 and andromeda, you're that guy right?
  22. yeah, share the price in sweden please, lots of swedish guys interested in this for some strange reason! How do you control the speed, possible from the XK5 switches?
  23. yeah, just download it, follow the instructions and install. the hardest step was finding a working download and you had to do a check out, even though it was free, it was a hassle. it sounds great, I thought something was wrong with it first time since the tone changes drastically half way up the keyboard, like a bad sample, but that's how his actual rhodes is setup, so it's an accurate representation of chick's rhodes, hence the name of the library.-
  24. well, in europe but they are stocked by the mighty Thomm. they remind me of my old wharfedale monitor boxes, they were really good, shame I let them go. this must have been around 2001. yeah, the wooden cabs are really nice if you don't have to lug them around! https://pasteboard.co/JKPbLUw.png https://pasteboard.co/JKPcEPU.png
  25. that's a good point, when I was doing my demo of blue3 i could not use any of the button or toggle switches on the YC to activate percussion or v/c. they send a blurb of sysex but nothing that vb3 or blue3 can recognise so you end up twisting a knob to switch on and off percussion which sucks. as i mentioed before, if a sound section is disabled then the controls for that section no longer transmits midi data. for example, if you want to use the reverb knob to control reverb in the plugin then you also need to activate the reverb section witht the funky toggle switch. there is a setting in the menus to invert that behaviour so only disabled sections transmit control data., but it started getting too complicated for me. hence why i recommended something like Oxygen 61 in previous post, it has 9 faders for drawbars, plenty of buttons and knobs to map to a useful amount of parameters in the plugin. of course, not waterfall action (there are no usb midi controllers with organ keys, except GSI thingy). i've had oxygens before and they have very light actions with rather shallow travel, so lets not get started on the trigger point thing again!
