  1. yes scott, that would be an even better solution. I'd appreciate a "performance lock" so that you can prevent accidentally leaving the performance that you are working on, this can happen by choosing the wrong type of category search, or nudging the data encoder. this synth has no ctrl-z...
  2. Hi and thanks mojkarma, good to hear that you're getting on fine. perhaps it's just me, I don't find it easy to distinguish between the green and blue fonts on the display, a bit color blind perhaps. and who wants to look at the display when auditioning sounds? not me anyway I use the increment button whilst playing and listening. it got a bit boring to apply the "single" filter every time I wanted to change a sound, it should be the default when loading a part into a multi-timbral performance. Note that everything is fine when selecting performances for playing on the keyboard, it's just constructing multis that I found tedious.
  3. anybody using their MODX to create multi-timbral performances for external sequencing? I've been finding it tedious to use the category search to choose a performance for each part, as you have to select attribute "single" every time. otherwise it will "merge" the chosen performance with unpredictable results. it gets tedious to apply the filter, and if you forget, all bets are off. the root of the trouble is that all patches in the MODX are a performance, which can be a "MULTI PART Performances" or "SINGLE PART Performance". I find the Motif architecture easier where a performance is made of one or more voices. In MODX the parts of a performance are other performances. too much recursion for my brain to handle... shouldn't the attribute filter default to "single" when using part search? that would improve the workflow greatly when building multi-timbral performances. (sorry, a bit hard to explain but if you've done this, you'll know exactly what i mean) one time I accidentally forgot to shift-click on the category button (part search) and unfortunately replaced my performance with a new performance, wiping out my work with no way to undo. lesson learned, save performance often! i'd like to hear from other owners how they are getting on with this, in case i'm missing some trick, just me that's struggling a bit? if you want the official guide from Yamaha then click below. https://www.yamahasynth.com/modx-category/mastering-modx-using-category-search
  4. same here samuelblupowitz, I also find the minimalist drum kit fascinating, is this what they mean by less is more?
  5. I know many of you enjoyed the previous collab, can never have enough of scary pockets and goldings, here's their most recent. [video:youtube]
  6. there is a Bosendorfer sample libary for the MODX, as well as the Chick Corea Rhodes plus some other goodies for free more info https://usa.yamaha.com/products/music_production/synthesizers/modx/sound_library.html
  7. great review Aidan and congrats on your new synth!
  8. thanks Aidan for promoting yesterday's live stream. We explored piano, e-piano, guitar and bass categories for the first time together and had a lot of fun. Completely unrehearsed and spontaneous. I plan on making a highlights compilation if you don't want to watch the 3 hour stream replay. And I don't blame you a bit! Very impressed with the sounds so far, a big step up from the Motif & MOXF. But I guess you Montage owners already knew that. Just a heads-up that I'll continue exploring the sound categories and features tonight (Sunday) at 2100 CEST on Twitch. Your chance to request sounds, songs and ask me questions about the synth. Have a good one. https://www.twitch.tv/woodypianoshack
  9. it's not only portability that can be inconvenient with 88s. I simply cannot fit one into my studio, they are too long to fit into the available areas in my room. Even worse if it's an 88 with a big slab of control panel on the left for the pitch and mod. I could make one fit if I put it diagonally in the middle of the room, but a bit awkward. A 73 would fit nicely in front of the window. I know this doesn't apply to everybody and if I had the large studio room of my dreams then an 88 it would be.
  10. very welcome addition to the range, I'm always banging on about how I don't need the extreme top and bottom notes on an 88. Does anybody? lack of midi not a biggie for me, you can always connect via your PC. I wouldn't want it any lighter than it is, prefer heavier for better feeling of quality and to prevent it sliding around on table or stand. Lightweight often equates to flimsy plastic.
  11. i use reaper almost daily, albeit as an amateur. plays any midi-file I throw at it, editing midi is a breeze, rock solid, fast, not encountered any bugs. the only drawback compared to other daws is that it does not come with any decent instruments, although the effects are serviceable. it might be worth paying more than reaper if bundled synths and instruments are important to you.
  12. @CalUKGR, thank you, appreciate the opinions of an owner. I can live with that, shame about the sequencer though. I owned my T5 for about a year and half (bought factory-fresh). I'm still waiting for my Genos to arrive, at which time the T5 gets part-exchanged. I won't be entirely sorry to see it go. In truth, though, many of the issues I had with the Tyros 5 won't be addressed by the Genos, either. Things which annoyed me about the T5: 1. No audio over USB - Yamaha's top-of-the-line arranger keyboard did not have a built-in USB audio interface. The Genos doesn't, either. Baffling. 2. Yamaha Expansion Manager/Expansion Board - unwieldy, over-fussy and frankly a pain. Changing anything on your expansion board means reformatting the whole board and re-loading in everything again - every single time you want to make even the slightest change to the board's contents. It's time-consuming and hugely irritating. 3. The built-in sequencer. Unintuitive, complex and frankly a pain to use. Far more trouble than it was ever worth. 4. Aesthetics. I always hated the look of the Tyros keyboards. The Genos does improve upon this greatly, imo. Genos looks sleeker and more professional. It's almost as if Yamaha finally wants to take its flagship seriously. ...Just a few gripes, off the top of my head. Genos won't be that much better and many of the same shortcomings will persist. It'll just be an even better sounding the Tyros 5 with a few added bells and whistles, but as far as I can tell Yamaha have not reinvented the arranger in Genos. It's not a revolution, just a mild evolution, with an even higher price-tag attached to it.
  13. Could you please elaborate on the issues with T5, since I'm in the market for one...
  14. at first i thought it sounded cool too, the same feature existed on tyros 5 for brass and string ensembles, but it's not perfect. consider when two members of a string quartet stop playing, that leaves just two instruments playing. this is not possible on tyros, it will always play 4 voices, regardless of how many notes you press.
  15. Seems a bit lame that you have to adjust parameters by first selecting a knob on the touch screen and then moving your hand to the data wheel to change the value. no multitouch or swipe? i know it's nit-picking but disappointing in 2017 on something priced this high. One more quick thought, there's never been a better time to buy a used Tyros 5
  16. i once heard that the difference between workstation synths and arrangers is that pro-synths have a volume slider and arrangers have a volume knob. seems to hold true even on the genos.
  17. Hi Escape, thanks for clarifying the mapping situation. In the meantime I played with the Jupiter. Check out the vid if you're curious how it sounds. [video:youtube]
  18. my 3 year old mid-range pc idles at 25% with one instance of Jup or Juno. Having both loaded eats 45%. But at least playing notes doesn't make it higher. building up multitracks with several instances will challenge my pc. but remember, still a beta product, and free for now. probable that these kind of things will be ironed out in the future.
  19. escape, maybe you can share the cc numbers for the filter and resonance? (my a49 only has 2 knobs) I could play the Ju8, didn't check CPU. i'll measure tomorrow. But with Juno I had problems doing screen capture and playing the plugin whilst recording audio. audio glitches. had to increase the asio latency. this has never been the case before so quite cpu hungry plugs perhaps.
  20. Figured I might as well record my first try of the Juno-106. [video:youtube] Escape, thanks for tips, I have experimented with the settings that you kindly described but no joy, no midi-learn and the manual does not explain the CC mappings. I have a hunch that the controls only integrates with Roland hardware synths. So, if you're wondering why my demo is just presets, well, now you know the reason.
  21. testing j8 and j106. sounds good but awful UI. no midi-learn on any controls and i can't figure out what cc will control the all important filter and res. also output of vst is far too hot, can't find any way to lower the overall volume of the plugin. if anybody can help, then plz chime in.
  22. My review of the tonewheel organs is up, the FA is as far as I am aware the only workstation in this price range to include a clonewheel organ. I believe it's basically the same old Roland VK emulation rebranded as "SuperNATURAL". It does a pretty decent job and I think this is captured in the video. I know a lot of guys are passionate about tonewheel emulations on this board so hopefully you will find it interesting!
  23. Hi chaps, sorry to bump an old thread but it was an excellent resource when I bought my FA08, and now I wanted to add a link to my video review series. Apologies for my terrible presentation skills, perhaps this will improve with time and practice... To compensate, the playing is not too shabby and I made an effort to capture a good quality audio recording of the instrument. If you are considering the FA for it's acoustic or electric pianos then these vids might be informative and worth a watch. In upcoming episodes I will dig into the clavs, organs and synth tones. cheers!
