lsj
I was visiting Baton Rouge and went to see 3 dog night at the casino. not bad. the keyboard player had an old dual manual hammond keyboard facing forward and to his right another keyboard. I could not see clearly to identify the keyboard to his right. it seemed strange looking from what I could see. I am very curious and will be happy if someone out there knows what keyboard he was using. thanx.

AnthonyM
Hey There, A little unrelated 3 Dog Night Trivia: Did you know that the guitarist - singer who played John Lennon (actually an exact sound and body double) in the Broadway play and was featured in Beatlemania The Movie - was a guitarist and backing vocalist in the touring band of 3 Dog Night? His name is David Leon and he was also in one of the revolving cast of Rain, when that was on Broadway more recently. In that play, he looked "exactly" like the 1970's John Lennon. The reason I know about the 3 Dog Night reference is that this was mentioned in the Cast Bio for Rain. Regards, Anthony
Ivan May
I was a huge fan of 3 Dog Night during their heyday and own several of their albums. It was very saddening to me when their original keyboardist Jimmy Greenspoon died a few years ago.

Mark Schmieder
Yeah Jimmy Greenspoon was an unsung hero, and the band in general was greatly underrated. Their Top 40 hits were about as far from being generic as you could get, and many of them were originals. The ones that weren't, were heavily arranged to give it their personal trademark, such as Shambala in the clip above. Elton John admits he is in debt to him for his own career taking off. 1 Quote Eugenio Upright, 60th Anniversary P-Bass, USA Geddy Lee J-Bass, Yamaha BBP35, D'angelico SS Bari, EXL1, Select Strat, 70th Anniversary Esquire, LP 57, Eastman T486, T64, Ibanez PM2, Hammond XK4, Moog Voyager

HammondDave
Love Three Dog Night. Saw them several times starting with their first National tour way back in the late 60’s. Awesome performers. One of my greatest thrills was meeting Mike Allsup last year and talking with him about some of the more interesting musical developments that TDN pioneered. I am now refurbishing Mike’s old Mellotron. Talk about “hit-makers”, LA songwriters would do almost anything to get TDN to record their tunes. Always love this video… 2 1 Quote '55 and '59 B3's; Leslies 147, 122, 21H; MODX 7+; NUMA Piano X 88; Motif XS7; Mellotrons M300 and M400’s; Wurlitzer 206; Gibson G101; Vox Continental; Mojo 61; Launchkey 88 Mk III; Korg Module; B3X; Model D6; Moog Model D

Shamanzarek
I saw them when they were opening for Steppenwolf. They hadn't had any hits yet but the local AM Top 40 station was playing "Nobody" and "Try a Little Tenderness". TDN stole the show and were immediately booked for a return date as headliners by which time "One" was a big hit. Several years ago I got to open for TDN in Connecticut. Jimmy Greenspoon and Cory Wells were still with us then. Jimmy was playing a Roland VK-88 through a Motion Sound Pro 3 and used a Kurzweil PC3 for the various EP sounds. They sounded great and did a new piece with very impressive vocal harmonies on which Cory played bass. In our show we played "Elenore" by The Turtles which sounds like "One" on the intro. A bit of trivia: In 1966 Paul Revere and the Raiders tried to get Cory to join them as bass player while he was still in The Enemys and both bands were playing at the Pussycat A-Go-Go in Las Vegas.. 1 Quote Gibson G101, Fender Rhodes Piano Bass, Vox Continental, RMI Electra-Piano and Harpsichord 300A, Hammond M102A, Hohner Combo Pianet, OB8, Matrix 12, Jupiter 6, Prophet 5 rev. 2, Pro-One, CS70M, CP35, PX-5S, WK-3800, Stage 3 Compact

I guess dressing up as a pirate and learning to jog in place while singing/playing didn't appeal to Cory. Too bad he didn't do it at least once for a future youtube. 1 Quote FunMachine. Always love this video… They were just incredible in the day, as Dave mentioned. Having three lead singers, and the material they chose, they were fantastic. I saw them twice on the 1975 tour; once at the outdoor but now-demolished Universal Amphitheater, and another show at the Santa Barbara Bowl. During this tour they used a second keyboardist, Skip "The Wizard" Conte, who, while looking kind of goofy in the Wizard attire and makeup, still had a cool Chamberlain in his rig. Sadly, Floyd Snead, their original drummer passed away earlier this year: https://bestclassicbands.com/floyd-sneed-obituary-three-dog-night-drummer-1-29-23/ I did see them this past summer with Danny being the sole "dog", and they sounded good but didn't have that great diversity of powerful voices that the original lineup had. It's a shame Danny can't bring Chuck Negron back in the fold, but I'm sure there's a fair amount of bad blood there, as well as not wanting to share the bulk of the income. An interesting side note - I happened to see a YouTube video of Chuck performing sometime pre-pandemic, and the camera showed a closeup of him you could see he was wearing some type of medical device that gave him oxygen. Apparently he has COPD and uses this device mentioned on his website: https://www.chucknegron.com/shop/bio/oxyview-oxygen-therapy-glasses/
JohnH
We had a guy sit in with us a few times here in Orange County, CA 2007-2010. He was a great keyboardist, but he lied as much as that D.C. politician from Brazil that’s in trouble for that. He told us he was in Rainbow, except he told the wrong band that and didn’t realize I am a Blackmore super fan , and I instantly knew he was lying. I got my revenge by posting about it on a Deep Purple forum. It was incredible , one of his friends chimed in telling us he lied to them too, telling them he was the wizard from Three Dog Night! One of my drummers was in a 3 Dog Night tribute, this guy shows up and then doesn’t know any of the songs. Whoops. Caught. He’s since died of cancer. He actually is on some CD’s , one from Joe Lynn Turner and Kelly Keeling’s brilliant Sight to the Eye, which I’ve had since 2005. Should have left it at that instead of making stuff up.
Mark Schmieder
I don't know about the bad blood with Chuck Negron, unless it's just the usual of being worn out dealing with a heroin addict and cocaine fiend, whether or not they are now seemingly rehabilitated. KuruPrionz
I wasn't into them way back in their heyday but even then I thought Eli's Coming was fantastic. Baldwin Funster
Danny's got gigs and a band of sideman who follow his calling the shots cause he's the OG. If he let Chuck back in there would be the possibility of conflict over songs or money and danny doesn't need that or him. And I suspect his band covers the parts so well that all the younger folks in the audience don't even know who isn't an original member. If Negron still has the chops he should form the Chuck Negrons Lonliest Number band. 1 Quote FunMachine.

Ivan May
And what about Joe Schermie? I always liked his bass playing in 3 Dog Night, and I certainly think he had one of the greatest Fender Jazz Bass tones in any 60's rock band. He sadly died in 2002, but he was an excellent bass player! Listen to his tones on One and The Family Of Man, for example.
16251
I loved to stare at this album cover, while listening to it. I so wanted a Leslie like them. As a senior in HS, the pinacol of my organ playing - hehe, I owned a used Farfisa Professional (single manual,) a Moog Satellite, and a used Leslie 900. That is as far as I went on organ before moving to piano (and jazz.) I could never afford a B3. <Before that organ set up I had a Vox Continental and a Leslie 825 & old wooden Wurlitzer (haha - I painted it red)> 2 Quote AvantGrand N2 | ES520 | Gallien-Krueger MK & MP | https://soundcloud.com/pete36251

Bill H.
Three Dog Night is one of those conundrums in music I have difficulty understanding. Creedence Clearwater (another California band active at the same time) is fondly remembered today, but except for those of us who were around at the time Three Dog Night is not - well nearly as much anyway. There has been a ton of stuff from the late 60s-early 70s that has lived on, but (this is just my experience as a DJ and karaoke host) I never get requests for Three Dog Night. And if I play one of their hits, practically no one under the age of 60 responds to it. How can people be so heartless...

Reading this threads and thinking back when they were the new band, myself and most my group of musicians we're not big TDN fans. We appreciated the vocals, but the tunes and arrangements were way too Top 40 sounding They were just another Pop band and we were in to harder rock and Soul/Funk music. Then CSN comes along and that we were very into their vocals and more Rock less Pop sounding. Also CNS were songwriters.
