  1. This song "Life During Wartime" and some others like The Rolling Stones "Miss You" have the quarter note kick beat of Disco. But I don't consider either to be Disco songs, and I like both of them. I truly love the live version of 'Life During Wartime" from the 'Stop Making Sense" movie, and I would love for our covers band to cover that version.
  2. I am a huge fan of Steely Dan and the Aja album in particular, and have listened to all its tracks countless times. I've always felt that the words "Well the" had a particular sound, as if a lot of effort was made to make them sound that way!
  3. I definitely like hearing what is on the original when learning to cover a song. I won't always be bound by the original, but sometimes there is something there that is valuable in figuring our how your keys part can contribute to the whole thing your band delivers. The posts by AROIOS and J.F.N. provided a lot of help for this, and after listening to those clips, I would have used those as a a starting point for trying to figure out what I would want to play if our band were going to cover this song. This a song where the guitar parts are more visible and important, but that just means I would need to find the best way to fit my keys stuff in without getting in the way. Whatever the keys player did on the original might be a better idea than anything I would think of on my own.
  4. Andrew Barth Feldman's version of Maneater captures what the song is about:
  5. Can you please share who was the Canadian company and how you contacted them?
  6. I noticed distorted sound from my Electrovoice zx-a1 during the last month. My initial guess was that I had blown its 8-inch main driver, and that I might have caused it by playing left hand bass with a weird synth bass patch during a recent rehearsal, when our bass player was absent. I ended up buying an Alto TS408 based on opinions shared from some of the people whose opinions I value in this forum, and the TS408 sounds a lot better than my zx-a1 had been sounding recently. My son opened up the zx-a1, discovered it was very easy to remove its amplifier "box", and detached the wires that sent signal to the 8-inch main driver. So he ran a test where he sent the output from the zx-a1 amplifier "box" to one of our Yamaha stage monitors, and he heard the same distortion we had been hearing from the zx-a1 before we opened it up. The conclusion is that it is the amplifier that is blown in the zx-a1, and not the speakers in the zx-a1. It just occurred to me that I have not tested the second input on the back of the zx-a1 since I started noticing the distortion. It is possible that I may have caused this by inserting the line-in TS cable into the back of the zx-a1 while it was powered on. I confess to impatience while multitasking. Has anyone every bought a replacement amplifier "box" for an Electrovoice zx-a1? I saw a listing on Amazon for one priced at $220 but the reviews made it seem very much a hit or miss product.
  7. Ok, this is the funniest thread I have read in a long time. I hope my sharing this removes any reservations the rest of you might have about me.
  8. The solo guitarist and I have been playing together in our Covers band since 2003.
  9. If you are running the mixing board yourself at a gig, while you are playing an instrument, I would want the mixing board to have physical faders. It's one thing to look at and adjust virtual faders on a screen while at rehearsal, but a different thing to deal with this while juggling responsibilities at a live gig.
  10. Should add a mention of some guy named Bernie.
  11. I would love to be able to purchase a video sync license for "Life in the Fast Lane", because our covers band plays it, and my son sings the lead vocal, and I would love to be able to post a video of this on our band's youtube channel. So for me it's a very personal and strong want for this. Before I knew about Don Henley's stance on copyrights, I tried posting a draft version of such a video, and even with it only being in non-published status (meaning one would need to know the exact video URL to view it), youtube immediately told me it was blocked in a very long list of countries (basically everywhere that would matter to me). Then I read up on Henley's position on this, and even watched a video of Don Henley's testimony on this topic to a congressional committee. As inconvenient as this is for my personal wants, I'm totally with Don Henley on the copyright issue. It's their composition. There wouldn't be a "Life in the Fast Lane" song worthy of covering if they had not composed it. My covers band is not forced to play it - there is a world of other good songs worth covering, but we choose to cover it because the song has value as a composition.
  12. In the spirit of obscuring logos on gear, as a joke, my son put a "Marshall" plastic logo on an old Roland KC-100.
  13. My favorite jazz pianists of the previous generation were McCoy Tyner and Bill Evans. I also liked Chick Corea a lot. I'm not sure who my favorite would be in the more current generation. I love some of the piano playing I heard on the early Roy Hargrove albums, but checking personnel I see 3 different pianists played on "Diamond in the Rough" and "The Vibe".
  14. The Bari sax I bring with me to gigs cost a lot more than my Stage 3.
  15. I guess not all red keyboards are Nords.
  16. I used an XV-5050 for over 10 years, and recently replaced it with an FA-07, which gives me all the sounds that were in the "base" of the XV-5050, plus all of the sounds that were in the SRX-07 card of my XV-5050. The combination of the incredibly flexible split capabilities and the sometimes quirky but practical sounds that were in the XV-5050 base and SRX-07 card are indispensable to me. One example is I was able to make a perfect setup for the weird "twang" G-pitch sound played during the chorus of "Cake By The Ocean". And I have used the flexible split and layering to enable me to trigger chord sounds from a PK-5a MIDI footpedal controller.
  17. I own a Roland KC-150, which is now my backup amp. It is very reliable, and probably will survive the apocalypse, but it creates a harsh sound when amplifying acoustic piano sounds, and I believe a lot of the Roland amps have this problem, so I would not recommend any of them if Acoustic Piano sounds matter to you. I use an Electrovoice zx-a1. Some people who are know more than me about keyboard amplification have posted about other options, including the Alto product which is probably quite a bit cheaper than a zx-a1. Just be aware that the wattage ratings for powered speakers use a different way to count wattage that what is used in traditional keyboard amps such as the Roland gear. My old KC-150 is rated at 60 Watts, but its loudness capability is similar to that of my EV zx-a1 (which is a powered speaker and claims a rating of 800 Watts). So I view the wattage ratings of all powered amp speakers as meaningless when compared against other alternatives such as the Roland keyboard amps. I still love my zx-a1, and would never buy another Roland keyboard amp, but I view powered speaker wattage ratings as a lie.
  18. For many pop/rock songs, if you go directly to youtube, and type the name of that song and add the word "isolated" after that, you will find some videos that include multiple isolated tracks for that particular song. Often they are not totally isolated, but contain a couple of instruments together, but it's still a huge help. I found "partial isolated" tracks this way even for something as obscure as the song "All Is Well" from the Chicago V album, for transcribing the keys and horn parts for a project I only recently finished. So I would just suggest searching for a specific song in this way on youtube.
  19. Good points about the impact of his home stadium on Helton's offensive stats. One criteria I have heard for whether a player is HOF-worthy is how many times did they appear in the top 3 (or top 5) of a key stat? In others words, it is not necessary that a player actually lead the league in home runs / slugging / batting / ERA / wins in order to consider their performance great, but to be very near the top. Helton had 7 years where he was in the top 5 for both batting average and on-base percentage. He had "only" 4 years where he was in the top 5 for slugging percentage. Normally that would be pretty impressive, but playing half your games a mile above sea level is going to elevate anyone's slugging percentage. And hitting lots of home runs is going to enable you to get more walks, if you have a good eye and avoid swinging at bad pitches - which will elevate your on-base percentage. And first baseman and outfielders are expected to have the best offensive stats. I'm not claiming that Helton is not HOF worthy. I just don't think I can tell by looking at his stats.
  20. As a huge fan of early Chicago, seeing isolated Covid videos made me want to make such a video of the song "All Is Well" from Chicago V. The drums played by Ira was the first part I recorded back in 2021, but sadly Ira passed away before the entire project was completed. For me this has been a labor of love. My son Justin is on trumpet, trombone and backup vocals, and a former bandmate flew across the country to record his bass part. That's me on the EP part, sax, and lead vocal:
  21. Thanks for the kind words. To be fair, what you hear on the youtube video has its balance optimized by doing a post-gig mix. We use a Zoom L-20 as a dual-purpose live mixing board and multitrack recorder which has 18 completely independent inputs. We need this many inputs because we have 7 people, 5 of whom sing at various times (as well as playing instruments), and we use 5 mics to capture the drum kit.
  22. If I were restricted to a single brand I would choose Yamaha, because they also make some wonderful saxes, and sax is my main instrument. I really like the intonation on my Yamaha Bari Sax (seen and heard here):
  23. I also heard that Lennon was sick with a cold that day. I'm not sure of my source for that, but it might have been an interview with George Martin.
