OT - Meatloaf RIP

Recommended Posts

RIP. Sad news. A terrific performer.

Meat Loaf was a huge part of my early 20s. In the midst of numerous musical genres of rock, punk, disco and new wave, the Bat Out Of Hell album cut through with a whole new sound and attitude. They played the Calderone Theater in NY - one of the best concerts ever.  One of my bands played tunes from Bat Out Of Hell.  Iconic album.

I loved those records. They were my textbooks. Bat, Dead Ringer, Bad for Good ( Meatloaf couldn’t sing on this record), Bat 2.

He had numerous health issues (notably asthma), refused to be vaccinated, railed against vaccination mandates, and caught COVID. A real shame.

One cover band I was I covered "All Dressed Up and No Place to Go" for quite a while, it rocked the house and was always in the show.

Thanks to Roy Bittan for shaping the sound of those key albums.

The first rock show I saw was Meat Loaf supporting his Back out of Hell II album.

@SamuelBLupowitz, why the thumbs down!? Dislike of the Loaf, dislike of Bittan, or disapproval at my formative concert experience?  😛

BluMonk, some of us have just noticed our thumbs ups have suddenly turned downward. dB is alerted in the “and we’re back” thread.

Yes, glad that got fixed -- I definitely wanted to give props to your Roy Bittan appreciation. Put Bat Out of Hell on while I was making breakfast yesterday -- it was in heavy rotation for me in high school but I hadn't listened in a few years -- and Roy's piano parts are such an iconic part of the record, even with the layered, larger-than-life guitars. The intro to the title track alone makes Roy indispensible to the sound.

I never saw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDSZxUlGZnA (click link) Meatloaf singing the National Anthem before, but I just saw this posted elsewhere and had to share it here...

As one commentator there posted:

"This is how the national anthem should be sung. No fancy vocal customizations. Just power, emotion and respect."

He'll be missed for sure -- man, what a voice he had.

Good performance. He puts such passion into every note. A few minor pitch issues, but I would take that every time over autotuned blandness. And he gets the high A without any problems!

Cheers, Mike.
