HammondDave
David Paich: The kalimba is all done with the GS1. It's six tracks of GS1 playing different rhythms. There's a high organ sound that's GS1, and I wrote the song on CS-80, so that plays the main part of the entire tune. Mystery solved! Moonglow
As most people who have a Kronos probably know, there is a program called "Africa Brass" that absolutely nails it. I believe it is one of the stellar programs developed by our very own Bush. Hoochie
Having the sounds is a small part of making this tune work. Heck , if you know the song, it could all be done on piano and sound good. I mapped out the whole thing. Kalimba intervals and all. That solo is bad ass. The Gong. When do you ever get to use a gong? I really like this song. I love to play it. Nobody can dance to it. So I wait. John

I really like this song. John Totally agree. Great song! And like all good songs, it sounds good good irrespective of sounds. (But I do like the sounds.) Hoochie
I did it on the Motif and Kronos more or less from scratch except the FM. The Motif has a bunch of the FM samples. The Kronos has FM. I wanted to get that FM kalimba tone and the right intervals. It was a 5th and 4th? Or a 4th of a 5th? I can't remember. That was the hard part. As I remember the analog brass was tough to get the modulation right because of no polyphonic aftertouch. You had to program reverb tails to take care of some of the decay so you could push the filter on certain passages. (If you are trying to do that) I don't have those boards anymore. So no help there. MathOfInsects
It's good but it's no Georgie Porgie. Will it get me kicked off the board if I say that I liked what Lenny Kravitz did with Georgie Porgie, more than Toto's original? Now out! Maarkr
Mike Martin made some excellent sounds for Toto on the PX-5S. It's demo'ed in one of his tutorials. And I saw Steve Lukather, formerly of Toto, touring with Ringo's All Star Band last month. They didn't have a perfect sound for Africa, but it was pretty good anyway. MathOfInsects
I have this sinking feeling that it was Eric Benet I was thinking of, and not Lenny Kravitz. I am not going to look it up, because I don't want to know, and also because I just did as I was typing this and it was indeed Benet. Now out! His backing band usually kills too. As for the "Africa" KB sound, the DX7 can reproduce it effortlessly. PD "The greatest thing you'll ever learn, is just to love and be loved in return."--E.
