  1. https://medicotopics.com/don-baldini-bassist-passed-away-cancer/ I met Don last Spring when he had a gig with some friends of mine. He was so kind and humble and had endless incredible stories about his tenure with Harry James, Frank Sinatra, Tonight Show, etc. I asked him if he would come to my house to play and he graciously agreed but I regret I never got around to calling him. I'm grateful that I did have the chance to meet him.
  2. In defining smooth jazz I'm reminded of Chief Justice Stewart's definition of pornography "I know it when I see it". When I surf stations and encounter smooth jazz, my response is "wow, these musicians sound great, why do I hate this so much?... oh it's smooth jazz." BTW, I was late teens/early 20's when Dave Grusin, Jeff Lorber, Tom Scott, Lee Rit became active and I loved the stuff then, not so much now. I did see Jeff Lorber play at Toad's Place; great show. I do appreciate the Richard T influence on Dave's electric grand solo.
  3. I would have kept Clifford Brown, Richie and Nancy Powell from driving that fateful night.
  4. I cannot comment on the virtual analog aspects of the stage but I concur on the White Grand which I use on my NP3. For me it is the best virtal AP I have ever played. It crosses the critical threshold from "I can tolerate this sound" to "I love this sound".
  5. I pre-ordered mine from Sweetwater. I am convinced this will have me playing as beautifully as Lyle (or not)!
  6. How did he get the pipe organ sound at 11:00?
  7. Ocean beach drawbars works great with my Nord C1. Just use it for upper manual.
  8. James is a monster on pretty much ALL instruments! I am an accomplished jazz pianist and trumpet player and have been known to play trumpet and piano simultaneously. However since the trumpet is a Bb instrument, improvisation requires thinking in 2 different keys which is nearly impossible for my inept brain. I am amazed by musicians who can do this well.
  9. I was using AUM through a MOTU M6. Also using Ravenscroft which is in stereo. Maybe I should try it standalone?
  10. It looks like the Windows and Mac version have voice pan but on the ios the voice variation knobs do not seem to create a stereo spread, it still sounds like it is mono.
  11. I have the OB-Xd for ios and it seems to have a mono only signal. I really want to be able to pan voices but I don't think the ios version allows that. Am I missing something or is there another ios OB app that does this?
  12. I'm in the CP>>CP88 camp. I tried the CP88 and hated the piano compared to CP4. Then I tried a used NP3 with White Grand and never looked back. To me, far superior sound although the action is lighter than I like (loved the CP4 action). Of course there are many on this forum that dislike the White Grand so it is very personal taste. You can find the NP3 fairly cheap.
  13. Anyone using ipad with USB interface like 3rd gen Focusrite or MOTU M6? Wondering about how user friendly it is.
  14. I would love to play a gig and not worry about losing time... or screwing up the form.
  15. Just shows how subjective and personal this topic is. I primarily play jazz and the Nord White Grand was a game changer for me; better than any VST or DP I've ever played. Dave F is a MONSTER jazz pianist and he has a totally different opinion. I have not tried the P515 as it has not been available to test locally. BTW, I do need to trim the treble on the White Grand as it is too bright without tweeking. I would love to try Keyscape; of the VST shootouts I have heard it sounds best to me. I have been disappointed too many times with expensive VST's that sound great on demos (Ivory I and II, Hammersmith, VSL model D, etc) and terrible (compared to my CP4) under my fingers.
  16. I know how subjective AP sounds are, but I sold my CP4 last summer after purchasing a used NP3. The White Grand to me makes the CP4's CFX sound like a toy. The action on the CP4 however was superior to the Nord, which most everybody agrees upon.
  17. Every note I play is the most beautiful sound I have ever heard. --Kenny Werner ...I wish it were true --me
  18. Definitely personal taste as I think the White Grand is the best DP I have ever played. Makes my CP4 CFX sound like a toy. I can play it all day and not get tired of it. I have tried multiple VST's (Synchron D, Ivory I and II, Hammersmith, PIanoteq) and to me nothing compares to the White Grand.
  19. Otolaryngologist (ear, nose and throat doctor). The anatomy and physiology of the ear is mind-boggling.
  20. Has anybody used Ipad (wich usb-c) with 3rd gen Focusrite interfaces? I know settings need to be done with PC but once set how does it work with Ipad alone?
  21. I bought a used C1 shortly after it was introduced and it was arguably the best clone at the time. I still play it (through 145 at home and vent on gigs). I bought a NP3 a few months ago and quickly retired my CP4 as the White Piano sounds infinitely better than anything on the CP4 although the keybed on the NP3 is far inferior to the CP4. I sold the CP4 for $500 less than I payed for the NP3 so pretty economical upgrade. Bottom line, Nords new are expensive, but used not so much.
