KeyB update report - clone porn inside...

It's amazing how you can put together pedals from Yokum, bench from hammond, stand from K&M (I think), organ from KeyB and Leslie from Leslie, and have it all fit together so nicely and look so cool. I expect that most of us cloners are extremely envious! The exception being those persons with a mojo on a K&M 18810 with an adjustible DW stool, and Roland pk5 pedals, and twin QSC K10's.. We're only mildly envious. ;-)

Hi Craig,

Yes it's a K&M stand, 18950, and it is fantastic! No wobble at all. Good German engineering. You know, I wouldn't mind a MOJO either, especially for the times I do some tiny cafe gigs. The KeyB might take up too much real estate. As I wrote before, the 3 tonewheel sets aren't that different to each other except on 88888888. So you MOJO owners have some more flexibility there. I'm not much of a tweaker, I basically get the sound right for the room and leave it. The KeyB has all that available on the left cheek block. I am one happy cloner these days.

I picked up a Hamichord too and I liked having the real hammond style interface (plus the convenient controls on the end blocks for eq and key click et.). But it's just too heavy for an old guy like me with back problems to gig with. I'll leave it for you young guys to lug around... Moving a B3 when I was young is no doubt a contributing factor in my back troubles!

dazzjazz, nice playing on 'summer samba'. I just ordered a MK111 from B3guys and expect it next week. One question; does it have a transpose button? The guy at B3guys (Wayne) said no but I find that hard to believe, especially since it's predecessor did. Would appreciate an answer. I already have a MotionSound Pro145 and a Leslie 3300 which I use with my Nord C1 and C2D. Can't wait to do an A/B comparison. Thanks again.

That's a lot of nice expensive organ clones there, cgiles.

One of the Nords will go, probably the C2D. I bought the C2D just before KeyB came out with the MK111 (with it's lower price and B3 type presets. I'll keep the C1 for gigging (hey, it's 34lb) and keep the KeyB as a home instrument. I'll add the matching stand, bench, and pedalboard once my wallet catches it's breath. I currently use a Roland PK7a with the Nord.

I'm pretty sure it does have that function, however I'm ideologically opposed to it! I will check when I take it out to a gig tomorrow.

Then you surprise them by playing it in the original key....

Different strokes.......I wouldn't do that to a PROFESSIONAL singer, especially when with one button push I could play it in the original key and he/she could sing it in their preferred key. Lacking a transpose button, if I didn't feel comfortable playing the tune in the requested key (unfamiliar tune + weird key), I'd just decline to do it. Just a personal choice, I guess.

I was being a little tongue in cheek, mostly because you mentioned Round Midnight specifically. That's one of those tunes I shoot down 99% of the time when it's called because, as a two issue spread on the tune in Keyboard from a number of years ago discussed, no one plays the same set of changes on that tune. The worst offenders are those that learned it out of the old Real Books. Those changes were just plain, flat out wrong. Even with people who do play A sections "right", the bridge almost *always* goes to hell.

Then there's the "you're expecting me to accommodate your limitations when all you have to do is sing one note at a time...." part of the whole equation. Or there's the "Round Midnight ain't a vocal tune, so if you can't sing it in the composer's intended key...." part of the equation either.

Of course I'd also expect a professional singer to be willing to at least go up or down a half step to make it a little easier on the band. I'd wager you could transpose Round Midnight on the fly in Bb easier than B. Of course we all know professional singers and a sense of reality are not frequently found in the same location. ;)

Sorry. Round Midnight is one of my favorite tunes ever. I'll even get into arguments with folks about playing anything more than an Eb triad at the end of the second and last A sections. The Eb triad Monk plays is one of the most unbelievably beautiful resolutions I think I've ever heard.

A ROMpler is just a polyphonic turntable.

Also one of my favorite tunes. I've been playing it for at least 40 years now, hopefully with the 'right' changes. I have many versions in my collection, from Monk to Miles to Peterson, and including several vocal versions. Most of Monk's tunes are an aquired taste, but not this one; it's beauty is universal and within the reach of anyone with a soul. My take, anyway.

With apologies to Kanker...

I've had the KeyB Mk3 for about 5 months now, but tonight was the first time I was able to run stereo QSC K10s. The difference was simply unbelievable. I can't quite understand why, but the tone was so very, very deep. Usually in mono I have to remove all the key click but his time I found myself adding instead. It was very inspiring to play. I even surprised myself by actually using chorale for a few bars here and there! It was very close to having a Leslie onstage.

I already had a high opinion of the KeyB but tonight's stereo rig has blow my mind. The 2nd speaker was borrowed, so I guess I'll be buying another.

Cool rig! I love those bass pedals. I just got a "Ventilator" and I want to thank everyone that talked it up last week. I can't beat the 10 hour gig, but I did give myself an extended concert of every organ solo that I've ever played in my life. I couldn't get any discount on the Vent, but I got them to bump me up to next-day shipping, which turned out even better!!!

If possible - PM me where you got yours from. I'm looking for one as well!

Really nice rig! I can't really imagine playing for 10 hours!

That sounds great, Darren! How far apart did you set up the speakers?

Bother speakers were behind me, about one foot apart, at a slight angle. The effect was total immersion in the sound.
