Dig My Rig--Let's see your setup!

Recommended Posts

A little update, I have the Receptor in my big rig now, controlled by a Novation SL61mkii. This replaces the Phatty seen to the left, I was using it for reference to replicate a few sounds.

Nice! Just curious - what are you using to replace the LP? I had to remove my Voyager from a gig due to limited space, and sound wise I'm very happy with Monark..!

I'm using various things out of the Receptor. Minimonsta is the main Moog replacement, but I'm using Pro53 and various other softsynths right now. I mainly wanted to have a 2nd polysynth option that the Moog couldn't provide. String machine emulations, splits/layers, etc.

justin, I really like the keybed. Nice aftertouch, semi weighted but still a fast synth action.

New toy! Picked it up locally for a very good price. One of the ends was smashed, so I took both of them off and used cap-head machine screws and locking nuts to affix the ends, running them through from the outside in. I think it looks quite high-tech.

Plus now it'll fit into the SKB-SC3212 that was in my attic.

Love the sounds and it's very intuitive to program for an old Model-D guy like me.

You did a real nice job with that repair. Do you have a "before" picture?

Congratulations and nice job, indeed!

Always really wanted one of the novas, used to play them at the NYC Sam Ash . . . intuitive programming board.

Here's the latest iteration of my gear and rig.

http://i937.photobucket.com/albums/ad216/tonysounds/SK%20NS%20Sub.jpg

Sk1-73, NordStage 2 88, Moog Sub 37

http://i937.photobucket.com/albums/ad216/tonysounds/SK%20NS%20Sub%20%20LIT%20Room.jpg

Those boards go into this pedalboard; the Strymon is for the Moog; the Mini-Vent and the far left momentary switch are for the SK1. The momentary switch controls the MiniVent, or when using a real leslie, controls the leslie. It's a momentary switch, so it only goes "fast" while I'm stepping on it. I like the in-betweens.

http://i937.photobucket.com/albums/ad216/tonysounds/Pedalboard.jpg

The pedalboard feeds my Speakeasy Vintage Pre for the SK1/Leslie.

http://i937.photobucket.com/albums/ad216/tonysounds/Tube%20pre.jpg

The pedalboard also feeds my (super modest these days!) rack, which holds an original Motif rack, a 30 year old Roland M120 line mixer, and my snake, which connects my keyboards to the rack. The snake contains the cable for switching leslie speeds, as well as audio and midi cables, and an a connection for my onstage monitor (Yamaha DSR 12 or DXR 10). The rack has power for the Speakeasy pre as well.

http://i937.photobucket.com/albums/ad216/tonysounds/Racl.jpg

This rig offers a lot in terms of spontaneity and flexibility.

This is my home studio set-up. Pretty happy with everything. Will 'upgrade' the Fantom X6 eventually. It is used solely as a controller. Tried the Kronos, wasn't for me. Thinking about maybe a PC3K6. We'll see what comes out this year. The Integra 7 pairs great with the Nord Stage IMO. The A49 controller has decent action for a simple midi controller. My old iPad2 has been relegated to Integra 7 editor/controller duty; the PC editor is terrible IMO. But the iPad editor is nice. Computer is a 2013 Mac Mini. It is actually racked in that 16 space rack just above the printer. Rack is called a 'Sonnet RackMac Mini'; overpriced but very cool. Superdrive is also in the rack. Primary software is Logic, MainStage, Komplete 10, and Halion Sonic. Omnisphere 2 is on my wish list but Alchemy being added to Apple has kept me pretty content so far.

Just got this as an early Christmas gift--a Hammond L111. Sounds great, just need to find a Leslie for it, which on my budget is going to be pretty difficult.

This is my new setup for live playing. For the first time ever I got all three keybeds I need in a very compact and lightweight setup: Roland RD64 hammer keys for piano/rhodes, Uhl X3-1 waterfall organ, Roland A800 synthkeys for synths and everything else in the Integra 7.

Really lovely setup there! Although when they're lined up on the stack like that the 3 extra keys on the RD are bugging me far more than it should...

I hear ya. But I like the RD64 piano action a lot. And it surprises me again and again, how little I miss the two cropped octaves... just push the octave shift button if needed. It has the exact same width as the Uhl X-3. And you can put another keyboard directly on top. Very handy.

That UHL looks fantastic on top of the Roland. How are you finding the sounds? Considering picking one up to go with my VR-09. I just wish the RD came with more vintage looking sidepanels; I would kill for a 61 waterfall/61HP setup in a single retro box.

I finally got around to posting pix of my live setup. This was from last night's gig at a local sports bar. The FAMC Liquid Foot LF+ mini pedal unit sends Program Changes to the Win8.1 notebook/tablet running Cantabile3, which in turn sends out all the Program Changes to the Fantom, Nord and Motif rack. CanTab also controls all the transpose, layers, splits, CC mapping, etc.

I wish I could perform as well as my rig. :P

Nice rig! I've played that place and always forced my way onto the stage with the rest of the band. :) As Markyboard says, let us know where you're playing...we're practically neighbors.

Korg Kronos 61 (2); Kurzweil PC4, Roland Fantom-06, Casio PX-350M; 2015 Macbook Pro and 2012 Mac Mini (Logic Pro X and Mainstage), GigPerformer 4.

Vonnor- if you don't mind PM me with your upcoming gigs. I'm always up for checking out fellow forumites in action and practically live next door. BTW cool setup.

maybe we could turn that into a mini MAKCH.

Mark, when Bill PM's you forward me the info

It's not close for me but always a possibility

Hey Vonnor, not to take the fun out of the rig, but why do you need the tablet/Cantabile to do the program changes and setups when either the Fantom or the Nord are capable?

Primarily my background I think. Back in '89-'91 I toured with a similar midi control system. Lake Butler Sound MIDI Mitigator pedal with song names on the display sending program changes to a Digital Music Corp MX-8 midi patchbay/processor. The MX-8 would do then what Cantabile does now. It's extremely flexible and with all units running LOCAL=OFF allows for two things I prefer.

1. I don't have to touch anything on my keyboards except the keys and wheels(or paddle) during the entire performance. The foot unit changes everything for each song.

2. I can play any sound on any sound generator module (NS2, Fantom, Motif) using any range of keys, and even use the Nord's mod wheel to simultaneously sweep the filter cutoff on one channel in the Roland and "Morph" sweep the hard-sync modulator on the NS2 (which I do for "One Thing Leads to Another").

Using the kind of setup you mentioned, I'm not sure how I could get both of the above, but I'm always willing to look at other options if they can streamline the rig without compromising preferences.

I guess I just have my head around this type of "Central Hub" MIDI system since I did something similar back in the day.

That's a really elegant-looking setup! The 3 boards visually integrate together well. I run a similar 3-board setup with a PX-5s, Hammond XK-1 and Axiom 61, but yours is much more compact and visually nicer. Is that a K&M 188800? I have the same stand, and like it a lot, the best 3-tier stand I've found so far.
