Dumbest keyboard player dream ever

Brought to me courtesy of my brain, mere moments ago...

I'm at a Bon Jovi show. Big outdoor night concert. Suddenly it starts raining, and nearly everyone leaves. So the dozen or so of us who are left, move to the very front. The band says they're gonna do one more tune, and they go into "Jump." During the first verse, I catch the keyboard player's eye and make the universal sign for "I'm a keyboard player too, can I sit in on this tune?" So he motions for me to come up, and I join in on another synth. When the big solo comes around, he gives it to me and I nail it. The crowd (all several of them) cheers. But then in the last verse, I accidentally hit the Start button on this massive vintage synth I'm playing, and a sequence starts. I quickly find and hit the Stop button, and look up sheepishly. Everyone in the band is busting up laughing. The tune ends, I thank the band, give some manly hugs, leave the stage.

Afterward I'm thinking about what a weird, random, funny night I've had. Hang on, I'm lying in bed. Did that really happen, or... nope, pretty sure it was just a dream. Dammit! Cool dream though, getting to play "Jump" with...

Wait a minute! I dreamed that it was Bon Jovi who played "Jump"??? Oh Jesus, what the hell was my subconscious thinking?!?

I was so mortified by the utter stupidity of this dream, that it woke me up completely, and now I can't go back to sleep. So in my insomnia, I thought I'd share my humiliation with y'all.

Dreams rock.

I have recurring dreams where I'm somewhere--music store, stage, warehouse, casino--and I'm invited to play a custom keyboard instrument--synth, classical organ, piano--and it always has some sort of odd, bright, and gaudy finish on it. I go to play and the keys are oddly shaped, or in the wrong place, or some other obstacle, which prevents me from playing well on them. I always embarrass myself in these dreams.

Had a dream the other night about owning an Oberheim Xpander... I awoke mid dream and spent 30 seconds searching my bed for it in the dark... then went back to sleep thinking I'll find it in the morning... ;-)

Btw, whenever I dream of playing keyboards the keys are either too big or too small or of the touch sense/membrane kind... anything Freudian in that I wonder? ;-)

Whether I'm asleep or awake, my recurring nightmare is wearing a tux and playing KBs for a "revue" in the pit on a PBS special. :D

Close to that reality, I recently got a call to consider playing keys in a James Brown tribute band.:laugh::cool:

My keyboard related dreams are always something about setting up and being late or having gear problems. It's always with the same band and it's always in some kind of big outdoor party/hippy fest sort of situation.

I've had that dream as well. :thu:

My favorite "keyboard" dream is... I'm using an interface that allows me to play exactly what's in my head. It's not a keyboard but some sort of touch screen or ribbon controller thingy. Instant inspiration and no mistakes. I want one.

the universal sign for "I'm a keyboard player too, can I sit in on this tune?"
There's a universal symbol for that? I'm assuming it's not the same one as "you suck, I can blow your sorry butt away."

That actually happened to me (or at least something close to it) in real life, at a college audition. I sat down at the piano and nervously started into the first Gershwin Prelude. Played the little rubato intro, then went for the low B-flat where the time comes in, and... WTF??? Why are there extra reverse-color keys at low end of this piano? I was so shocked I stopped playing and just stared at them. The judges kind of snickered, "Oh, he's never seen a Bosendorfer before."

Didn't end up going to that school...

In my dream universe, yes.

I had one of these Psycho dreams just last night! I coudn't get my keys setup correctly so I removed the whole thing from the stage in frustration.

After the band got pissed, I brought it all back but played with my back to the audience.....WOW! What a looser I am..

I also have dreams where, instead of a keyboard, I am playing a big ribbon controller, wondering "how the hell am I supposed to find the notes?", and generally struggling.
Funny dream like that years ago: some inventor was all excited for me to try his new keyboard. It was a one octave keyboard hidden behind a crude wooden box with 10 holes in it. You put your fingers through the holes and try to find the keys on the other side. :freak: Good thing it was a dream.

A Worthwhile dream, very nice instrument. Basically modular gear in digital drag. I had one for about 5 years and sold it when I got married!

I had a weird dream last night. A polished Copper room with one porthole and drapes and it just seemed to be there for a tune whose melody sounded a bit like 'Wheel in the Sky Keeps on Turning' only with more piano/keys? No Expander though I did wonder where the ship was going and why the tune was so lucid!

weird! :)

Just start playing. The interface reads your mind... at least in my dream anyway. :thu:

I'd have thought that a keyboardist's dumbest dream would be dreaming that you're a guitarist...
How about saying that guitar is cooler than keyboards?

Was your keytar all wet and sticky? I hear thats a real hazard

Turns out youre not the only person who has that dream. Imagine being Derek Sherinian: http://tinyurl.com/jumpassdream

The only difference between his nightmare and your's is the guitar steals the solo in his!!!!

Hitting "Play" does NOT constitute live performance. -Me.

My keyboard related dreams are always something about setting up and being late or having gear problems. It's always with the same band and it's always in some kind of big outdoor party/hippy fest sort of situation.

I dug up this thread because I had one of these types of dreams just as I was waking up this morning.

There is this recurring dream I have about gigging. It's usually the same general thing. It's a big gig and always out of town. A huge showcase. And I'm usually in a band that I'm not familiar with.

I'm always late. Or don't have a ride. Or held up in a motel. Or some other complication. Sometimes we're supposed to start and the equipment isn't set up. Or it's still in the truck. This time in order to get there I was hoofing it down the road with a bag of clothes over my shoulder (a unique twist to this recurring dream - possibly triggered by the fact that I did my laundry yesterday).

Somehow this time I got to the gig and made it onstage. Sometimes I don't make it. I was playing keyboards I wasn't familiar with - with musicians I didn't know. At the end musicians were swapping positions as we were all playing an encore of some sort.

The entire time I didn't recognize any of the songs, had no idea of what I was supposed to play, was scared to death that someone would notice, and was a nervous wreck.

So is this just my own neurotic insecurities being manifested in this recurring dream or are these types of dreams common among the rest of you?

I missed this thread the first time 'round

I have similar dreams where basically I am a fish out of water, but in a place where I should be at home. Like on stage or whatever. A typical keyboard dream is that I am at a gig and I forget the chords to the song, and can't get any of them right. Or my keys are all of a sudden really hard to press. Once I had a dream, that my board only had one key - middle C of course. I was sweating hoping no one would notice.

The fish out of water thing is not limited to keys playing for me. I have had it about work (doing a presentation and not knowing anything about the sudject), or my other hobby - Close up Magic - trying to do tricks with thick sticky cards for example.

I'm just saying', everyone that confuses correlation with causation eventually ends up dead.

This is the same as my golf dreams. There is no such thing as a good golf dream, anyone who plays golf will tell you. For instance, in one I was trying to hit a tee shot to a par three from a raft floating on a rough lake - impossible. I could barely stand let alone hit a golf ball. :freak: It's awful, but very similar to your keyboard dream. Sometimes your mind plays dirty tricks on you.

Regards,

Joe

I only had one keyboard-related dream, but it was a variation of a classic ...

I had been rehearsing with a country band for several months, looking forward to playing the Miss. casino circuit. I had never played country before, but I became the band's MD in short time. The idea was that the band would back up one female singer at a time: she'd get her feet wet on a small tour, record a demo; we'd shuffle her off to Nashville, then pick up a new singer, rinse, repeat. Decent plan, but the manager was a crook.

The night before our first gig (a wedding rehearsal dinner with a bunch of Jackson's well-to-do), I dreamed the gig was at the local concert hall, and I showed up late ... and naked. A humiliated band, an amused audience, a horrified singer, and a livid manager awaited me as I set up my rig. My gear had been replaced with the heaviest and most awkward to set up (I think a P200 and a Fantom X8, which is odd because I'd never play a gig with two 88s), and I was positioned at the edge of the stage -- in front of an all-ages crowd of Mississippi Republican Protestants. The dream tortured me through set up, sound check, tuning the band, and calling an abbreviated set list -- I woke up on the downbeat of the first song.

New style, new band, lots of pressure, little experience, and a growing dislike of the manager culminated in that horrifying nightmare. The actual gig went very well - small, informal, fun, and they fed us (how pro). Though I'm loathe to believe in such, perhaps the dream was an omen ...

A few weeks later I got into it with the manager, and she "fired" me (hello, you're not paying me). A month or two after that, she took the band to a roadhouse gig in Wyoming. While the band was sleeping, she ran off with the van, the money, and the trailer full of their gear, stranding them broke and gear-less halfway across the country.

Oh, shi... Sorry to say this, but that somehow makes me feel better about the flaky managers and promoters I've worked with. Better flaky than criminally insane.

Omen or not, it's a reminder to listen to our intuition about people.

Indeed.

I'm glad I got "fired" when I did -- I can retain something positive from the experience (being an MD, learning a new style, charting 100+ tunes, etc.), and not have that drowned by loss of a few thousand dollars in gear!

You have a name you'd like to share? ... a photo would be real good. :)

No guitarists were harmed during the making of this message.

In general, harmonic complexity is inversely proportional to the ratio between chording and non-chording instruments.
