Is Your Music Any Good? Find Out Here!!

Thanks for listening and commenting. There is some great music posted here. You can spend an eternity just mixing/tweaking a song, especially with today's technology. You listen days later and want to change something, but it gets to a point where you've just got to let it go or no one would ever hear it. It is what it is. My arrangements tend to be sparse. There is such a thing as too much frosting, but it ultimately comes down to what fits the song. This song was recorded with Sonar 3, MOTU 2408 IIIs (44.1/16 bit). Lead vocal was an RCA 77dx set at figure 8 through an Ampex 350 preamp (gotta love those 12SJ7s), an RNC 8:1 ATT 2 REL .7. The melody line vocal, during the choruses, was recorded with the same setup as the BG vocals which was a Shure KSM 44 (omni position). Piano was MIDIed using a Roland RD-600. Drums were E-mu Procussion. Bass was a 1967 Fender Jazz bass through a Symetrix 501 about 5:1. Slide was a 79’ Strat through a POD XT, into a Fender Pro Junior. The POD setup used the “octave box” for that screamy/octave/harmonic sound. There are many acoustic guitar tracks. Some are an Epi nylon, a Salamanca nylon and an Alvarez steel string. Strings are a Chamberlin sample. All tracks are sent to discrete 2408 outputs to a Mackie 32x8. I do not mix in the box. Reverbs on this one are Lexicon PCM 90 and an ART DR-1. Even though it’s an old box, the DR-1 has some very colored, useable algorithms and is very quiet. I mixed to a Compaq Presario 2 GHz notebook with a Digigram VX-440 card and CEP. I did some “normalize” and that was that. GY

A tad of reverb added to the instruments might be a good thing but overall considering the sounds you're using...it sounds good. :thu: neat...Surfing the Beaches of Neptune is my favorite of these two

I haven't posted anything here in a while... and I'm woefully behind the other tracks... (gotta do some marathon listening)! But recently I participated in a collaboration with another player... and wrote a song based on their "backing track" that I think a lot of musicians... especially guitar players... can relate to. Search 4 Tone The guy who did the rhythm track DEMANDED that slide guitar be played on this song... and even though I haven't even TRIED to play slide in more than a decade... I found a rusty metal slide in one of my bags of guitar junk and gave it a try. Errr... The slide playing is far from good... bordering on embarassing... but the lyrics and mood of the song came out ok, I think. Hope anyone who listens gets a SMILE from this! Thanks in advance for any comments! :D guitplayer

GY, I have to echo the "Beatles/Paul" vibe... you did a great job capturing that feel and sound! Alcohol, Nice "power-pop". I really liked the harmonies on the hook... The lo-fi feel really fits the song. Stephen, "What?" is a cool jam, I like the interplay of the drums and keyboards especially. Experimental fusion, but very "listenable". William, I'm having problems accessing your songs and your site. Don't know what the problem is, but 404 error with multiple tries? guitplayer

Guit. Nice lyrics and I like the tone of the vocal. Something about the tone of the slide, low mids?, that intensifies the obvious need to tighten up on the slide, which you've explained from the start. Actually you did pretty damn good if you haven't touched a slide in more that a decade. I think a tone change and putting it a little softer in the mix would help the part alot. If this isn't a multitracked recording, that will be impossible. Anyway nice songwriting.

The slide is a little rough in spots, but I don't mind a little slop in my slide. I do feel that the vocals and especially the guitar are too far out front in the mix. I would back them off a bit so that they sit in better with the other instruments. The drums: I would take a little of that hi end off. They're a little too crisp. Also, the drummer's playing to just too busy for that song. It's a cool groove, but he/she needs to back way off on those hits and fills. Just stick to the groove, and give an occasional hit on the splash or something.

Super 8

Thanks for all the comments. I appreciate it. Everything could be improved... the playing, sound, mix, backing track... But it was made as a "fast" one time through track that I only spent about 30 minutes working on... I had NOTHING to do with the rhythm track... but I did play the slide, sing, and mix the song... Maybe I'll go back and re-mix a bit... I think it's a funny and maybe "too-true" for me song! guitplayer

This thread has always scare the dickens out of me as it's so huge. We've finally put a couple of tunes up and would love some feedback. Due to the immense hugeness of this thread, we'll try and look up anyone who checks us and provide comments. Just put up a link to your stuff in your review of our stuff. Thanks a bunch to anyone who has the time. :) http://www.soundclick.com/bands/3/davidandselenamusic.htm

I hadn't gotten to yours yet though...listening to "Wasted Time" now... The saxes are really cool, they really set a unique mood that totally compliments the vibe of the song. FWIW...I think this song is a little long considering there isn't a real drummer keeping it interesting. That's about all I have to say about it...cool tune...not a waste of time at all :) Checking out "Unusual Evening" now...very unusual :) ...neat tune, the doubletrack sound on the vocal makes it feel old in a bad way but while that sound bugs me, others might find nostalgia in it dig. This thread is very huge, taking time to listen to every single tune and comment on it is too much...even just commenting on the tunes of people who commented on my tune is tough to keep up with. I'll try to do better :)

Thanks Khan, I couldn't get em to stream either, you might try downloading if it's not an all day ordeal like it is for me. :) Stephen, thanks very much for your comments. My sax playing is rusty but sometimes it makes things fit better. I agree the song is maybe too long, but it had to be to get all the lyrics in. The double track vocal in Unusual is an effort to make my voice stronger and copying 60s people at that. Don't do it much anymore but used to. These songs are from two CDs from the late 90s (ADAT/Mackie/dat stuff) and we've spent all of the 2000s working on our current recording which is on computer and much more hi-fi me thinks. The old stuff is just copyrighted and done so the first thing posted. Thanks a huge bunch for checking these tunes guys! :thu:

Could someone click here and tell me if this MP3 file works? (Click on Pink Twinkie link.) If it does and you want to know what it is... it's one of the silly songs I wrote for a friend's birthday. His name is Easy. But if it works, I'd like to know what you think of this recording. I mean, the quality of the recording... if it's a decent demo, good, real good, whatever. (The recorded quality.) I think we did five tracks at my friend's home studio... 1. I strummed guitar 2. Then strummend and picked it a bit different 3. Tambourine 4. Another shakey gizmo 5. A one take vocal. If I did it over I don't think I would go UP on that last note. Plus, I have since changed the last bridge to be about a "cold Busch." And BTW, this was inspried from a true story! Here is the lyric. “PINK TWINKIE AND A COLD BUSCH” ©2004 All rights reserved The ranchers would meet at the diner They couldn’t find fast food no finer The waitress was Marge but some called her Sarge And sometimes they called her Shiner Easy was hungry for something He called out to Marge for some dumplin’s He’d been in the field and sure needed a meal His stomach was really rumblin’ Ol’ Margie said Dumplings aren’t ready So, how ‘bout some chicken-spaghetti I know it’s still hot and it’s all I got So, don’t you complain or I’ll belt ya Easy accepted the special To argue with Margie was stressful He ate it all up in just four or five gulps Then put on his beat up old Stetson [ BRIDGE: ] Easy must not have been thinkin’ Asked Marge is she had a PINK TWINKIE She sure popped him hard, it left a big scar She left Easy lying there blinkin’ It happened so fast, it surprised us For Easy, those words were disastrous He wanted a twinkie, she thought he was kinky And called him a dirty old bastard [ BRIDGE #2: ] But this is when shove became push He asked if she had a COLD BUSCH He just couldn’t win, he saw stars again She left Easy there on his tush If you ever dine down at Marge’s Just finish your chicken and starches Don’t you dare ask, you’ll be on your ass Don’t ask if she has a PINK TWINKIE And you’ll be in pain if you don’t use your brain Don’t ask if she has a COLD BUSCH

Hi DUke - I got the link to work. It's a cool, fun song, I think the demo is good to very good in quality, I like the type of production you put on it for the most part. I should mention that due to circumstance I'm only able to monitor in a set of headphones (Senn HD600's) - there's something happening between the 2 guitar tracks that is a bit distracting and for a while I thought there was a real short slap on a single guitar that was set off-tempo from the song pulse. Then I read your produciton notes and it's 2 seperate guitars - listening to it again I think you have the 1st acoustic guitar in the same slap field as the vocal - I think that's what's confusing my ears - I'd turn the slap send down a touch on the left acoustic guitar. Just guessing...plus I'm in headphones too and don't have speakers so it may not be a big deal... I liked it !

Okay, thanks, I just wanted to make sure that mp3 was working and get an opinion on the demo quality. Because I did every track, one take. Total time was one hour for those five tracks and him mixing it. I was wondering if the quality is decent because I might do some more by him. I thought it was pretty good for a guy and a boxtop and a tambourine and a shakey thing.

Well, if you like the comic touch, I'd appreciate a listen to "Girl, You Better Boil It". http://www.soundclick.com/bands/0/pignosepickersandfriendsmusic.htm (sleb: actually, I'm going to release some new stuff under this name pretty soon :) ) Stephen, no need to comment, this is for those who haven't heard it. Unless, you just feel the need.
