1. By the way, can the song "Sailing" even be considered "yacht rock" if most yachts don't have sails? I don't know the correct term for operation of a yacht. Maybe one sails a yacht regardless if it has a motor or not?
2. +2 I tend to equate the term "yacht rock" with terms such as "OK, Boomer" and whatever other subtle putdowns the cool kids are using these days to put people who are their parents age back in their place.
3. I've learned to be assertive when it comes time to picking new songs. If I don't pick songs with keys or piano in them, we'll have a setlist totally made up of keyboardless "modern rock" songs picked by the 20- and 30-something "kids" in the band. Not that those are bad songs, but they're exactly what the OP was asking about in this thread. And I find myself generally accompanying on the organ but it's more fun to have some leads on the keyboard.
4. Hey that's cool! I didn't know he had a music career before his acting career.
5. Ken, is that at Nelson Ghost Town? If it is, I admit I never noticed the lettering on it! 😻
6. "Summer Breeze" by Seals and Croft. Bonus points for me because it instantly brings me back to Age 7 and the final summer before we moved to Illinois (I think we used to hear it on the radio and on the jukebox at Pizza Inn). I hear the opening riff and just like that I am riding my bike or swinging on the swings we had under the giant tree in our yard.
7. The Weezer video for "Take On Me" is pretty good too.
8. It would have been even funnier if he had said it as "A-ha!" instead of "Aha!" but maybe that would have been too obvious.
9. Would that typically work for ALL keybaords, or just for the higher-end better-equipped ones? For example, I have two Casio boards, one being a cheapie $170 CTX-700. Can I run an output from one board to the input of the other?
10. No offense taken, we're all good. The GE of today is virtually a complete different company from the GE of the 50s-60s-70s. I suppose they still sell appliances but I am sure they're just the cheapest stuff they can get from China but with a GE logo slapped on it. Home appliances and light bulbs and TVs are probably just a nuisance to whatever their main business is anymore, whatever that is, hedge funds or something LOL.
11. Interestingly, I grew up in an all-GE family. My dad worked for GE most of his career and was able to get things at a discount. Washer, dryer, refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave, electric carving knife, can opener, a couple TVs..... Probably others I've forgotten. This stuff was all circa-1970s and as such was all Made in USA and spare parts and service were plentiful and available locally. I am sure all that support is gone nowadays.
12. I like Nick Carver's videos but unfortunately he isn't super prolific. Just a few videos a year. His video of shooting a liquor store is a favorite!
13. I play piano, so I'm not sure I'm eligible to reply, but I do have one guitar. My first and only. It isn't what it appears to be however. It is one of those kits you can get on Amazon for about $90. Believe me it looks a lot better than it plays! The action is perpetually too high and I think the neck is starting to develop a warp. I am sure it doesn't stay in tune either. I figured if I ever did a video podcast or something like that I could have it visible on a stand in the background because it does look nice from about fifteen feet away. I should probably mention my dad had an acoustic that I never heard him play in his entire life, not once. My brother eventually took it when he died.
14. Glenbard West H.S. Class of 1965...... Same school as me but I was a couple decades later.
15. I wish I was closer because I'd get a real kick out of seeing that in person. We are doing Living on a Prayer also but we just picked it a couple weeks ago and have one practice only. I keep asking the guitar player when he's going to get a talk box! 😉
16. We played just a few weeks ago at a little bar/brewpub/beer garden; the place has a big outdoor patio, a small gazebo and a nice stage on the grass in back. With rain in the forecast, though, they decided to move us onto the back porch of the main building instead, so we'd be under a little bit of a roof. As it turned out, the "roof" was just an awning so to stay dry we were all crowded together with all our cables and power cords right under our feet. There were two heavy timber columns on either side of our makeshift "stage" and there was a giant tree growing up through a big hole in the middle of the porch right in front of us (I think the tree was there first so they built the porch around it). Almost all of the audience was a hundred feet away from us under the gazebo. I suppose really it wasn't a bad setup besides being crowded, but all our friends who tried shooting pics or videos were frustrated trying to shoot around the big columns and the tree. But at least we stayed dry.
17. LOL So true! In my case, it was rhythm. Taking lessons as a kid, for whatever reason we never worked on rhythm. Never counted the beats, never used a metronome, etc. Either I was really good at faking it, or my teacher just didn't care, or something. I don't know. Coming back to the piano as an adult, I was learning songs (you know, actual songs with words) and I would sing along with them in my head as I played. And then I decided to get a teacher..... And the first thing he had to do was correct me of my bad habits! "No, no, the lyrics here come in on the 3 of the previous measure" etc, etc... It was a rude awakening. I went home from a lot of lessons really frustrated!
18. Wow, what a dumpster fire! Makes one wonder what other arrangements Dean gets involved in and soon forgets all about (having seen that firsthand with my own mother, it's quite the possibility). Imagine the rude awakening if we had shown up to find 500 other people there to share the paths with.... Uh, yeah no thanks. Oh, and I did mean "we"; although I was officially "on the fence" I did buy plane tickets back in June so my plan was to go if my schedule allowed. Yay for Southwest Rapid Rewards! I really feel awful for you guys. I've been to enough workshops to recognize the large amount of work and planning that goes into these events and they almost always go so smoothly I don't think the first-timers realize what all went on to make that happen. To do all that work to make it happen at a new location thousands of miles from home only to have it collapse like that is a real kick in the gut. We all do appreciate the effort and share in the disappointment. Hopefully something good can come out of it and we can all get together for some good shooting some time!
19. I was behind a guy who was trimming his own hair while driving. At each red light, he'd pick up a scissors, look into the mirror and trim a few locks of hair. Maybe he wanted to look good for an important interview, or a big date? Seems like a good way to get a really bad haircut. Imagine the mess afterward.
20. The real cheapskates frugal members among us would just open up the keyboard and "borrow" one of the A keys from the extreme high or low end of the keyboard for use in place of the broken key.
21. Oh no! I hope nothing bad has happened. I hope it wasn't for lack of attendance. I know I was officially on the fence, but we're supposedly doing a show in either "late October or early November" and until that is settled I just couldn't pull the trigger. Sandra asked me if I was going so I was hoping that I would be!
22. Absolutely! I was a quiet kid and had a hard time meeting friends. Group lessons or something like that would have been a revelation vs. the solo approach of walking to the teacher's house after school for my lesson. I'd usually pass the student before me (a little girl half my age) in the foyer but even after 2-3 years of lessons I don't think any of us knew each other. I think by design, the big social event for us was the annual recital, which I dreaded.
23. As Tommy Shaw said on VH1's Behind the Music: "I just couldn't write any more songs about robots". On an unrelated note, I've got "Crystal Ball" on our list of sings I want the band to learn eventually. I am sure those harmonies will be a challenge! But that song has always been one of my favorites.
24. I have two Casios and will take a better look at them when I get home. But be forewarned that even though at first glance the plugs look similar, they are not interchangeable.
