Dig My Rig--Let's see your setup!
Lou Gehrig Charles replied to Justin Havu's topic in The Keyboard Corner
Dual Casios last night at a local beer garden/restaurant/brewpub. They placed us on the porch at the very last minute due to the imminent threat of rain but that meant we were REALLY close together since no one wanted to be out from under the small covered area. I think the drummer was close enough to reach the higher end of my boards! I couldn't even step back far enough to get my sweet Z stand in the shot! Fortunately when the rain did come it wasn't windy enough to get us wet but I was ready with the stack of napkins at the far end of the keyboard. Just in case. -
Keyboard-Clueless Sound Techs (rant)
Lou Gehrig Charles replied to vonnor's topic in The Keyboard Corner
Well..... Wish us luck. We play our very first show tomorrow, outdoors at a bar/restaurant. Technically it's my first show; a few of the others have played out before. My biggest concern is that the outdoors ambiance will mean my sound gets totally lost and is unheard. Well, that's the biggest concern besides the usual concern about playing the wrong notes of course! LOL Maybe it's better if I can't be heard! -
OT - What are you listening to right now?
Lou Gehrig Charles replied to Philip Clark's topic in The Keyboard Corner
"Beggin'" by Maneskin..... Apparently it's an old Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons song. I have to play it on Saturday and I've been working on it for two days already! LOL Just two more days to go! -
I've always marveled at that lens when I've seen it online or in the Nikon catalog. Nice to see all those detail photos which I've never seen before! Maybe we can each go in for half and can share it....

I saw the Drive-By Truckers at Chicago's Vic Theater in about 2006.... I probably would have enjoyed it had I known some (any) of the material, but I didn't. That plus the fact they were totally deafening. It was as if they'd brought a sound system suitable for an outdoor arena show to the much smaller theater venue. I've seen my share of very loud bands but this one stands out for its extreme volume which seems just odd for a southern rock kind of band.

"Route 66 Abandoned: Under a Western Moon" - book
Lou Gehrig Charles replied to KenElevenShadows's topic in The Big Picture
A quick note about the Summit Inn: It shook me back into reality, seeing it going up in flames on the national news that day, because it was the first and so far only place I ever recognized in all the countless California wildfire coverage I've seen. Too bad they couldn't save it. Glad you got the photo! It's more than I ever got.- 11 replies

Mine is here! W00!!! Maybe I'm the first! Looks good at a quick glance; I'll have to give it a better look in a few hours. It's piano practice time!- 11 replies

Has your GAS ever gone for good? (😙)
Lou Gehrig Charles replied to nadroj's topic in The Keyboard Corner
I'm probably fortunate I didn't go down the Guitar road; I'd be in the same boat as you most likely! But I do admit they would look cool hanging there on the wall.... Hmmmm. I'm still thrilled to be finally using an 88-key KB after moving up from my 61. But the GAS thing rears its head in other ways - I probably have 30 cameras, for example. And four bicycles. And four cars, which is probably about three too many for someone who is single and lives alone. Having two keyboards seems quite reasonable in comparison. -
Yamaha P-125 and P-45 Successor Announced
Lou Gehrig Charles replied to CHarrell's topic in The Keyboard Corner
+2 I owned a P-125 for about four days and promptly returned it. The standard piano sound was fine.... I just couldn't get into any of the organ, synth or EP sounds at all. I couldn't even find a second one to set as a preset. -
Keyboard-Clueless Sound Techs (rant)
Lou Gehrig Charles replied to vonnor's topic in The Keyboard Corner
+2 We're learning "Rich Girl" by Hall and Oates.... Nice prominent electric piano sound, interesting rhythm, etc. Then the guitar player decided it needed more guitar so he found a fast ska/punk version of it with NO discernible keyboards. "Oh, but you can still play it! It's the same chords!". Sure, but no one will hear me. -
Keyboard-Clueless Sound Techs (rant)
Lou Gehrig Charles replied to vonnor's topic in The Keyboard Corner
Our sound guy has temporarily assumed the role of playing drums also, since our regular drummer is pregnant and is out for the foreseeable future. Unfortunately, seated behind the drum kit he can't hear any of the rest of the mix. We practiced Saturday and I was certain I wasn't loud enough.... Confirmed afterward when the guitar player told me he couldn't hear me at all. I'm going to have to be more assertive this week! -
Songs with Amazingly Dumb Lyrics
Lou Gehrig Charles replied to Anderton's topic in Craig Anderton's Sound, Studio, and Stage
Grace Slick being the only one on both records though..... Interestingly, Bernie Taupin was a co-writer on "We Built This City". That I never knew! -
Lowest end keyboards: a pity for wannabe players
Lou Gehrig Charles replied to Jose EB5AGV's topic in The Keyboard Corner
+2 The only "unplayable" keyboard I ever tried to play was a child-size toy which had keys narrower than normal. All my "muscle memory" was useless on it. LOL -
Does anyone make a keyboard shelf?
Lou Gehrig Charles replied to RABid's topic in The Keyboard Corner
It's a slippery slope. Next you'll need a taller garage to park your new truck in. -

There's one large popular venue near me that has a very large "Lite" logo on the wall at the back of the stage.... Lite, as in Lite Beer from Miller. The running joke is that if your band doesn't have a banner, they get dubbed "Lite" by default. Our band is temporarily going by the name of the room we practice in. Coincidently, it's the same name as a certain other band that is much more talented and well-known - Chicago. Something tells me we should fix that before even thinking about a banner.

Lowest end keyboards: a pity for wannabe players
Lou Gehrig Charles replied to Jose EB5AGV's topic in The Keyboard Corner
That describes my parents exactly. Even well into young-adulthood, if there was something I really wanted I learned to just save up and buy it myself. Often they'd get mad afterward, saying I should have told them I wanted it so they could get it for me for Christmas... Sure, but it's June! And they'd just look up the item in the store and buy one three rungs further down the pricing ladder instead. I've only been back into playing music for about five years now, but for much of that I was using a $170 Casio CTX-700. Sure, the keys are springy and squeaky but I like many of the sounds it has. Enough so I bought another Casio when it came time for a fully-weighted 88-key board. I keep the old one though for those songs I need a second board on. -
The keyboard player paradox
Lou Gehrig Charles replied to Jose EB5AGV's topic in The Keyboard Corner
I am realizing that my problem is I can't hear myself as well as my bandmates can. I need my own monitor. -
The keyboard player paradox

My keyboard hero is Don Airey, so if I could just play like him.... I wouldn't mind being in the background! 🎹 -

Three annoying things photographers hate to hear
Lou Gehrig Charles replied to KenElevenShadows's topic in The Big Picture
Ahhh, the pitfalls of "people" photography. Reminds me why I like to take pictures of things OTHER than people! I am one of the official photographers of our car club (bet you didn't know there were clubs for the Pontiac Fiero). Shooting the cars is easy... But when I have to shoot one of the members (or candids of the members at an event) it could not be any more stressful! But I did get a magazine cover photo last year, so that made it fun.- 8 replies
