The plan here (UK) seems to be to basically allow most people to catch it - but more slowly than nature intended - whilst at the same time isolating and protecting those most at risk from the illness. They plan to ask all the over 70s to hibernate for about 4 months at some point soon... Apparently once 60% of us have had it then the entire population as a whole becomes resistant to the disease and it can no longer spread very much. At the moment, if you have any form of illness whatsoever, irrespective of what it is - even a mild sniffle of a cold - you have to stay at home for 7 days. They are no longer testing anyone except people being admitted to hospital. The main point of the slowing is to try to stop the hospitals from being overwhelmed; not to stop people from catching the disease. Schools are to remain open.

After careful consideration, I think these measures make sense and I am hopeful that things will go the way they expect them to. But is is seriously scary. (I really don't want to catch it....) Especially when I read all the statistics on the worldometer site....

Good luck with it - the UK are certainly taking a different approach that relies on a lot of things going right to work. Fingers crossed.

Indefinite school closures announced here today. I still see some musicians trying to gig. I get it, but the crowds will be even thinner than usual. Do the right thing, cancel/postpone your gigs, look into alternate ways of connecting with your fans and paying your bills.

I've seen a couple times now from apparent experts (if there is such a thing) that the virus cannot survive in weather over 80 - 83 degrees.

The last couple days here have been around that. Maybe that will help get rid of it in the wild.

My workplace has been allowing a lot of people to work from home. I had that opportunity to try that Friday, but it required a Windows computer that has a speed on minimum 2.0GHz.

Mine tested out to 1.8 GHz. So, no working from home

But, this weekend they brought in a company to heavily sanitize the entire office, with a chemical that we were told was harmless to humans, but would last for 90 days.

They're also making sure that disinfecting wipes, hand sanitizer, and hand soap are easily available.

Normally, I would not be all that concerned. I'm of the age where my immune system has had a lot of practice.

But, with all the chemo my wife has experienced, her immune system is non-existent. Her oncologist has indicated that she is very high risk.

So I have to be careful that I don't pass it to her.

Dave
Here in Europe these restrictions took already place some days ago. Big cities are closing down, cafes, restaurants, gyms, concerts, shops, malls etc. AFAIK the only country that defies this apparent danger is England: yesterday some guys posted a pic of a big concert in Manchester by the Stereophonics. There were more than 20.000 people in a closed arena, kind of an invitation to a party for coronavirus! And then, the semi-marathon somewhere in England with over than 6.000 participants...

Hi Dave, even though I am healthy as a 20 year old, I am ok making the sacrifice per the Guvners order.

I see sacrifice and patience as virtues.

I have also upped the ante. Told my wife I shouldn't wash my dishes or clean the litter boxes.

" Co-existence " is being tested wink

I wish everyone who thinks "I'm young and this won't affect me" understood that young(ish) people can still get serious effects from this, and may still require a ventilator.

There are 5000 ventilators (so I've read) in New York City; most of them already have patients hooked up to them.

There are limited numbers of respiratory specialists who can use them, and if those people start getting sick then there will be less of them.

That is the reason to slow this thing down. If we run out of ventilators and ICU space, a lot of people will be dying that wouldn't have otherwise.

My brother is a nurse in Brevard County (east central coast of FL). He said "we are going to be overwhelmed most likely". Just tons of retirees here and a lot of people aren't taking it seriously. The two reasons I have seen:
- people don't follow news because it's all negative and hysterical. Our guitarist is this type. I agreed with him to not follow cable news, but do read articles coming out by doctors in places like John Hopkins.
- people think this is a media-driven hoax/conspiracy/non-event that is political in nature. In other words, all of this is designed to hurt one of the political parties. Most of the older people that are laughing this off are in this group.

----

IF--and man I hope so--hot weather with high levels of sunshine (UV) help slow this down then for ONCE I won't be complaining that Florida is really hot already in March....it's been 87 or so, not really sure the humidity. There are cases here, but so far we haven't heard of many. A co-worker is now getting tested via video conference with her doc. She came back from NYC 14 days ago and is not feeling well. I will be ultra-pissed if she has it since I've felt we should have all been working from home since this started. We easily can do so.

I believe this is really the crux of it. A wide spread outbreak will tax our health care system beyond what they are designed to handle at any one time.
Doctors in Italy are saying they are at a point right now where the beds are full and they have to make decisions about who is and who isn't who going to get treatment today - not just for this virus but for everything that comes in the door. If we can slow down the spread and reduce the number of cases that are happening all at once, we are helping ourselves, our loved ones, our neighbors and citizens and of course our healthcare workers.

Does he work at one of the hospitals here in Brevard?

I've been getting most of my news from places like MSN, CNN. I can get more in-depth information. With Cheryl's health, I have to stay on top of it.

Saturday night there were only about 30 people in church, including the pastors, crew, and praise band. There was only one row filled, and that we Cheryl and I along with our home Bible study group. I haven't heard what Sunday was like, but we've had Livestream happening for some time now, so people can still get Pastor Jeff's message without having to risk contact.

Saturday, I dropped my wife off for a birthday lunch (her birthday is tomorrow) and on my way home I passed a church that displayed that Sunday Services had been cancelled.

Like Stokely, i hope they're right that the heat will kill it. Then we only have to get past the cases that are already here.

Everyone stay safe.

Yes, he works at Cape Canaveral...lives in Rockledge but for whatever reason preferred to work there, it's a bit of a drive. As an aside, I was born at CCH many years ago, as was he I think!

I would certainly avoid going to church if they have a livestream, personally. Restaurants, nope. As Dr Fauci stated: "If you think maybe you are overreacting, you are probably doing it right." (something similar)

On an ominous note, a co-worker is now being evaluated via video appointment with her doc. She came back from NYC 14 days ago and just started feeling ill in the last day. If she has it I will not be happy since I've been saying we should have been working from home for at least the past two weeks....

I had to be pretty blunt with my 78 year old father yesterday. There’s a danger for a lot of people to dismiss the severity of this virus and blunt force realisation has to be put to them.

To get him to sit up and listen, I made him listen to the UK Health Secretary being interviewed on Sunday and I followed that up with the statement that if he got it he’d probably die. It was the only way I could get him to listen and stay indoors - which is now looking mandatory here anyway for the over 70’s and those with underlying conditions.

I’m showing him how to order online groceries with his iPad and getting his meds delivered to him from now on.

He lives on his own so a lot falls on me, and I’m in the health condition scenario with Type 1 Diabetes (he has T2) so I need to watch my back too. Thankfully I’m very much a home bird who likes his own company, and I have plenty of jobs to do around the house, so a lock down won’t be so bad.

Never been so glad to not be committed to gigging at all.

Since he's working for Health First and living in Rockledge, CCH is probably the closest to him.

I live about 2 miles from Palm Bay community Hospital, and work less than a mile from Holmes Regional Medical Center

CCh has always had the best cafeteria. Went there one day and they had grilled tuna steaks for the main entree.

On a lighter note, I really enjoyed this article about an "outbreak" that occurred in an online video game. I used to play World of Warcraft and remember when this happened.

The short version was that a big boss had a "disease" that he could give to players that hurt them over time. What happened was that players got the disease, would panic, and teleported back to towns and cities, spreading it to other players grin In that game you can have pets and there are other animals, and they were able to get and spread the disease without showing symptoms (which was a big red aura around you if memory serves). Just like with a real disaster, you had people panicking and spreading accidentally, people spreading on purpose, and people that didn't know what was going on getting it when they went to check out the commotion smile

I just got back from doing rounds in the hospital. I work 10 % of the time checking charting on 7 acute units. Everything is on lock-down. Since I work at a teaching hospital we regularly have students on campus and they shut down on all their swipe access. Only essential personal and you can only use specific people are allowed. No family members on the units unless absolutely necessary.

I'm retired so staying home isn't that big a deal, but feel so bad for all my musician friends and small business owners. So many not teaching or gigging for a few weeks can potentially wipe them out. One NYC Jazz club owner really upset he's having to close, but I think real reason is he has a new daughter so concerned for his family.

I do like how musicians are going on YouTube and Facebook streaming their playing and lessons to give others at home something to listen to or get practice idea from. Music community helping each other is good and I know I will buy some music or donate what I can to say thanks.

I'm wish everyone the best and especially those whose whole living comes from music together we can help each other work thru this.

Okay, okay Oprah moment over, I'm putting my Sun Ra CD back on.

I keep hearing that you should sing the Birthday song when washing your hands.

Seems like the 2:42 it takes to go through the Beatles' Birthday is a bit excessive.

I found this article helpful:

Medium Article: Clonk

It appears non-hysterical, data-driven, well-researched and helpful.

Here in NorCal, we're hunkered down and staying home, except for very occasional trips for groceries and necessities. Ordered our first grocery home-delivery (it won't come until Saturday - the delivery services are overloaded).

My 89-year old mom lives by herself - but also doesn't drive, so she's isolated by default. For now, that's one thing I'm grateful for. My college campus proclaimed no in-person classes, all 100% online after Spring Break, which is fine by me as I've been recording video lectures for a few years now.

My heart goes out to so so so many of my friends and fellow musos who are 100% gig income. More than a few were already having their lives decimated by AB5 (a recent state legislation severely impacting independent contractors), and now to be hit with mandated venue closings and summary gig postponements - only some of my friends have savings.

I just had my American Idol semifinalist tour cancelled, and the first wedding gig postponement from May to August. I suspect more will come. I'm very grateful I'm not 100% gig income (and never have been), but this is going to be very hard on a lot of people I care about.

Just read because the coronavirus is killing the stock market Apple is talking about buying Disney. Pretty slimy move to take advantage of a pandemic like that, but what a nightmare Apple owning Disney and all their properties.

not surprising.

Maybe not the same, I have acquaintances that are loading up on shares of Apple, amazon and Netflix

Not judging, I think individual stocks are somewhat of a gamble.

Anyway, the stock market is 1 huge casino IMO

Seems like the 2:42 it takes to go through the Beatles' Birthday is a bit excessive.
Don't get me wrong, they're my favorite band, but if I had to listen all the way through the Beatles' "Birthday" every time I wash my hands at the current rate, I'd be praying for the virus to take me by Wednesday!

One of our nieces is an ER doc, her fiancé is a helicopter EMT; they're right on the front lines of this. Our niece sent a msg begging all of her older relatives to stay away from public spaces, period, regardless of whether there are 50, or 10, or 5 other people there. It appears now that airborne transmission is a factor, so just breathing around others has risk potential. If you're close enough to bump elbows, you're close enough to be breathing the same air.

Bear in mimd, we're talking precaution, not panic. If you don't put yourself in a position to catch it, you're less likely to be in a position to share it.

Plus, old gear has a story. I like that.
