Phil "graypencil" Kelly - good to have someone with your experience on board! Any chance we can hear some of your work?

RobT - Don't worry, dude, you're not the only bassist who hangs out here. We DO try to discourage g****r players, though, for obvious reasons. ;)

Dan:

sure .. I'd be more than happy to send anyone some "stuff...

but, with the following caveats: :)

1. I don't do MP3s .. ( and I don't wash windows either )

If anyone wants to hear anything, e- mail me ( blind style) and tell me what kind of things you're into ..I'm in the process of installing a Masterlink HD in my dubbing chain, ( so I can send CD-Rs like the rest of the world does these days) but what was promised to have arrived and installed "two weeks ago"..

aint here yet ): ...

so.. for the time being, all I can send anyone is stone age cassettes ... I hope this changes real soon ...

oh yeh:

GEAR!!!

( I forgot that in my initial post )

pencils/erasers

score pads of various sizes

73 suitcase Rhodes ( for real .. mint condition .. needs tuning :) )

that's it .., when I moved to WA , I gave my vintage '90s MIDI rig to my son to tool around with ..

however, I may invest in a new Mac G4 with a honker HD , a good Keyboard, ( open to suggestions ..currently leaning towards a Kurzweil 2600 ) and a decent notation program ( probably Sibelius )

(not trying to go back into the production bizPencil :) )

Phil, If you're serious about a the K2600, consider dealing with Sweetwater. They have a great Kurz tech support team there. I've owned three Kurzweils, and two of them needed attention to get the kinks worked out. Dealing with anyone other than Sweetwater would have been a nightmare. Sweetwater also has some excellent Kurz soundware. I highly recommend their Total Stereo Session Drums CD. You will NOT want to live without it.

Tritons rock, too, but in a different way. It all depends on the sound that you're going for.

I'll hold off until you get your MasterLink. You don't do MP3's, I don't do cassettes. ;)

As an American, should I pronounce your handle er-pee-wee or er-pee-VEE?

too right you are, i never regretted buying the SY77. Programming your own FM voices is a bit tough, but i guess that comes with the territory. Only thing it doesn't do is good drum sounds, but there are enough samples on the net to solve that problem.....

that's a good one dan, never really given any thought to that. I guess wee at the end is better (in Dutch, anyway). Not that erpeewee means anything, it's just my initials written phonetically (Ronald Peter Wijchers, aka RPW).

hehe glad you had a listen mate. I use primarily a Roland JV-1080, Roalnd MC-307, sample CD's and a Digi 001.

I don't have too much info about me because I'm a modest sort of guy, and I found when I used to put my stats and pic on the page I spent too many hours a day dealing with emails containing offers of marriage, sex, money, or all three :D

I will start by saying posts I make tend to put a kabosh

on a thread. So, in sincerety, the treat that musicians or avid readers find at this forum is just wonderful. I am Nathan Sady, and I persevered on many instruments without

showing the vast talent that has made this realm enjoyable to

much of the population. I was allowed to study at Berklee

after lessons and various affilliations. Enhancing the musical experience were many a talent, from personalities to

perfect pitch, and the opportunity to hear people play expert

renditions to their very accomplished solo styles.

Somehow I went from recording some ideas from a U-20 sitting atop a rhodes to playing a 1937 septemio soprani accordian in several groups and doing some arranging. Not having reached a professional level I still hold out for an effort to become at ease in one of the styles on one of the many instruments I have been playing. Keyboard if anything.

Great entries into the forum, also informative dialogue

from those in the know, as well as good questions. All right,

my paragraph is in. Oh yeah, Burlingame is a character from a novel.

Nathan, welcome aboard from another Arizonan. I did most of my growing up in Tempe, and I was a music major at Arizona State University. I've been living in California since 1987, but I still go "home" about once a year. I haven't been to Tucson for a long time though. Does Caruso's still have the best spumoni?

Enthusiasm powers the world.

I am a 49 year old (hits the front in the geezer stakes) Software Engineer who emigrated to the US from Australia about 12 years ago. I've been playing piano on and off since I was six. Since I moved to the US I've been working on improvisational styles of music (Blues, especially New Orleans, getting into Jazz and Gospel). Only got back into it about 4 or 5 years ago and only really got focused on improving for last two years. Also play Sax/Flute and some Clarinet.

Currently rehearsing with a band - I would say we will be ready to play out early in the year. I have also sung in Church Choirs, played in pits (one show did Bari Sax, flute, Clarinet and Bass Clarinet - had to be dug out from under the collapsed pile of instruments after every show).

I am also busy relearning music theory, both Jazz and Classical - I never went past high school in music theory and only now have I come to understand how woefully bogus the theory they taught us at that level was - not only incomplete (as you would expect) but also quite misleading, even when it came to the harmony of JS Bach - one of the problems with growing up in Australia in those days was lack of access to a wide range of books - you were pretty much a hostage of the educational establishment.

Gear: QS8 main board, top board is a Yamaha S03 which I use mainly as a midi controller to a Technics WSA1R for Hammond sounds.

Dave-Have not been in that area of late, but can say Kingfisher saved a couple of us from appettite threat.

Looking for an update on equipment. Maybe on another thread.

I noticed that suggestions range from finding a computer/music

specialist to the Karma. finally the akai Z8 came up in forum, though did not leave me with overwhelming confidence.

The Karma I would like to hear again, except for the chorus

or voice sample.

The mighty Kingfishers is just north and east from where you dined. I do not know if they serve up Italian quisine.

Very nearly enterred the famed Carusos. There have not been additions to compliment the glut of housing that goes on in the vast, unlimited resources of the development world.

Hello, I'm Bill Plummer and live in suburban DC. Presently I make my living doing 5.1 mixes for DVDs. An awfully fun job.

I play keys, but it's not something that I do as often as I'd like. I've been working with a group called Happy The Man as live mixer and all around studio guy. I'm very influenced by the prog rock/fusion scene of the 70s. Some of my favorites players are-

Kit Watkins

David Sancious

Kenny Drew Jr.

Frank Wyatt

Tony Banks

Jan Hammer

Delmar Brown

Brian Eno

Joe Zawinul

Eddie Jobson

and many more.

I've posted for quite a while on the audio side of things. I'm glad to have made it over to the key players forum.

Hey, Tinder!

Welcome! I've heard good things about Happy The Man; I'll have to check them out.

I'm a fellow Logic freak. Most of the music I've produced would not have been possible without this program (and I'm NOT an endorser). In fact, this past year, I have "rescued" a number of half-finished compositions that I couldn't seem to finish in Vision. Opcode's demise was GOOD for ME. ;)

I'm looking forward to working with Emagic's ES2 plug in. I use the ES1 and EXS24 today. The ES1 has some real BALLS!

How do you like the XV5080? It's on my short list.

Let me in!!!!

Hi,

NYC Drew in the Keyboard forum. Quite the imposter I am. I have a Kurzweil K2500XS, and a $400 deposit on 15 music lessons. My lessons end in January.

I would like to play keys (live) for any of the old Spyrogyra gang or do some heavy studio production stuff starting in February. Can somebody please hook me up? BTW, are the "white" keys bass or treble? Or is it the notes on the left hand that are sharp, and the right hand flat?

As you can see, I have a lot to learn. I'm a slow methodical (retarded) kinda student, but I'm sure there are many cools shortcuts, tips and tricks, that you guys can give me to get me up to snuff. BTW, I can only practice 2 hrs a week....

-----------------------------

Seriously, I was at the FORUM FOOD FEST last night (11-30-01..NYC), and I met Dan South, Dave Byrce etc...

I lurk a bit here, but I believe that words spoken MUST mean more than silence...so, I've been quiet with nothing (much) to add.

I am currently not doing a whole bunch of audio...going thru some transitions...often tour as a live engineer and/or tour manage and/or road manager....not much of a studio engineer, but that should change in 2002. I bought some gear, mostly for my own pleasure, working at my own speed.

Still working on who I am & what I do, when I figure it out, I'll let ya know. Not interested in grammies and working with big name artistes. More interested in making good music, and keeping as far away from the blood sucking mentality of large record companies and the likes.

I'm easy going, and I'll never attack any of youse personally etc. The only thing that really gets me bent is the gal or guy looking find the answer for 5 years of learning and experience in an online post. I'm a strong believer of doing one's homework, doing the leg work, doing the research, understanding WHAT is involved in whatever we endeavor into...

That's all for now, the guys and gals at the dinner last night were a swell bunch. I hope the opportunity for such an occasion is floated again...

DREW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

It's my distinct honor and pleasure to be the first to welcome you to the Keyboard Corner. You've come to the RIGHT place for all of your keyboard questions. The folks here are very knowledgeable, very helpful, and most of all, very friendly - just like over on SSS. We'll get you cranking on that Kurzweil in short order!

Everybody else, not only is Drew a highly respected engineer here in New York, he's also a great guy and a generous forum participant who shares his knowledge - and AMAZING stories ;) - very freely.

Please make Drew feel at home!

Dan, the 5080 is excellent, especially with the drum card. I was going to use it for sample playback as well, but then the EXS24 came out.

I was hoping to run into more of the forum guys and gals at AES yesterday than I did, but I had the pleasure of meeting David Bryce (how's the throat holding up?), Valkarie and some guy named Max Manley (looked an awful lot like GM).

My name is Dick Metcalf (tho' I usually go by my nick, Rotcod Zzaj). I just moved back to Washington state from Michigan.

I play (primarily) Kurzweill PC-88 in improvised/spontaneous mode.

My influences are folks like Frank Zappa, Davey Williams, LaDonna Smith, & those I play with (I've produced about 60 CD's since 1988) through/via the Internet.
