Comet 67P has the building blocks of life — smells like mothballs and almonds

By Robert Lea published about 13 hours ago

Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko is rich in organic molecules that play a key role in the development of carbon-based life.

Comet 67P has napthalene, benzoic acid, benzaldehyde, but no mention of any amino acids.  Interesting.

Actually,

"Some of the other  molecules [found on Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko], like formamide, have what is known as prebiotic functionality, meaning they assist in the synthesis of biomolecules such as amino acids and sugars."

Today I watched Hawaii beat Tennessee for the USA Little League championship, tomorrow Curacao in the championship game. Much credit to Tennessee, Hawaii beat them 13-0 on Wednesday. Today 5-1, but 2 swings of that were all that separated them. A 2 run homer in the 4th and double play in 6th that could have been a double if a few inches either way.

Watching the series The Sandman, among others, we rally, really loved the animated short, A Dream of a Thousand Cats that began the 11th, final episode of Season 1. It left us wanting more! A very good adaptation of a stand-alone segment from the comic series that the streaming television series is based on.

And I just watched this:

Well this evening I was reminded that Miranda Lambert is pretty freakin good-
I liked 'If I was a Cowboy'.
Recently, Dust. I mean the youtube channel, sci fi short films.

Quality is variable and some are not in English, but always interesting.

Oh! I don't believe it was cyanide; lemmy lookitt that again...

Aaah, here we go:

"We found, for instance, naphthalene, which is responsible for the characteristic smell of mothballs," Hänni said. "And we also found benzoic acid, a natural component of incense,” Hänni says. “In addition, we identified benzaldehyde, widely used to confer almond flavor to foods, and many other molecules.

"These heavy organics would apparently make Chury'’s scent even more complex, but also more appealing."

I'll be sure to check that out. In the mean time, I'll say that the first halfway-decent electric guitar that I bought was a Peavey T-15; I kinda miss that guitar, it had some great features and qualities- including a very short 23-1/2" scale-length, and single-coil, blade-pole "Super Ferrite" pickups, with a character somewhere between Fender-style pickups and P-90's... They were fantastic with fuzz and distortion!

I am not sure if anybody remembers the Prevue Guide channel, but they had some really good TV listings. Also, the elevator muzak they used to play on the Prevue Guide channel was a little corny, but not in a bad way.

This was back when HBO, Prevue Guide, Nickelodeon and Showtime were great TV networks, and when they actually focused on making TV shows and movies for entertainment instead of money.

Anon, once more the gesture, then begin:
          Command sinistral pedestal to writhe.
Commence thou then the fervid Hokey-Poke.
A mad gyration, hips in wanton swirl.
To Spin!  A wilde release from Heavens yoke.
Blessed dirvish!  Surely canst go, girl.

The big question is, could we hit another asteroid with a nuclear bomb and blow it apart?  Because an asteroid or comet that is big enough to make impact instead of burning up in the atmosphere could make life miserable for us.

I just happened upon the last minute of this mission as it occurred in real time. Technology is pretty awesome, to get such high resolution pix as the probe headed to impact, hitting a 500 foot wide object, 7 million miles away, at 14,000 mph. Wow, kudos to the JPL team again.
