OT: Irma Go Away!

I'm in Plantation FL. We're in good shape, house has PGT windows, even put old style metal shutters on the lower windows and patio. New roof a year ago.

The storm is moving to the west, but it has slowed down. They were figuring it would make landfall Sunday morning and be gone by Sunday night, but it's slowed to a crawl.

04:00 AM EDT Sun Sep 10

Location: South East of Key West

Moving: NW at 6 mph <------ Could be another Houston. We have good drains where I am.

Min pressure: 928 mb

Max sustained: 130 mph

Still have power. Along with surfing on the computer, doing Hanon exercises and scales until my hands get tired. Then I take a break. Also have a sight reading app for my iPhone that's pretty neat.

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/music-note-sight-reading-trainer-piano/id874386416?mt=8

I'm practicing on my Rhodes 88, don't need power to hear the notes.

Checking in to see how everyone is holding up.

Good on those of you who are utilizing music to get you though. I think music has amazing powers.

Continue to stay safe all.

I have someone in Silver Springs, Florida, and have not heard from her yet.

We're in the Tropical Storm now. No power, so I made coffee and when the old fashioned way, I get the music itch I'll whip out the violin or my Irish Whistle and play away.

Good to hear everyone is ok. I bugged out of town last week. My little island is completely flooded, but miraculously (as told by a crazy neighbor that stayed behind) our building lost power from 2pm Sunday until 5am this morning.

Central SC is good to go, so far. I still have power and the winds and rain are moderate at this time. It's a far cry from what the early forecasts led us to expect. Sympathies for those with flooding and/or without power.

Honestly, our worst problem (fingers crossed that no trees fall or anything) has been the damned roaches. They know something's up and have been coming in the house in waves. I watched Zorro last night with my family and every few minutes someone would let out a yell as a roach ran across their foot or some other body part. I kept a can of spray ready. I think my tally over the two hours of the movie was seven roaches. YUK! But if that's the worst we have to deal with, I can live with it.

Came through relatively unscathed, some water leakage in the house, trees down, lots of debris - nothing major. Fortunately the studio seems to be 100% (haven't hooked everything up and powered up yet). Hope everyone else in the path made out as well as I. It's no fun to be without power, water, phone, stores open etc. for a month in 98 degree heat like the last time!

This has been a strange year indeed. Even in unaffected areas (except for wild fires around us in Idaho), I have noticed some strange things with insects.

Normally we get a lot of earwigs but not very many this year.

The wasp population has gone up by 900% (maybe slight exaggeration). They are pretty aggressive, too. Hubby got stung in the eye.

Hope all who had any damage from the hurricanes can get things repaired and back to or better than normal.

:)

That's funny. I've lived in southern California for 39 years and saw my first earwig here yesterday.

Thanks for the well wishes everyone. Made it out fine. I was one of the few in Broward county who didn't lose power. 657k people did lose power. No damage to the house. My car was in a parking garage, no damage. Only one tree toppled over in my neighborhood because we did a major trimming job in March after a tornado passed by. The neighborhood next to us didn't trim trees, and they had many topple over into the road. All of our planning and being prepared was worth it.

Does everyone want to see pictures? I'll post links, click one then close that window or back to come here.

My home shuttered up, also have PGT windows.

I'm on the HOA so I'm already working with the landscaper on the clean up.

This is the neighborhood next to us that didn't trim trees. Some say that might not be the cause, but I think it is.

Jazzmammal,

The roach assault continues, though the storm has passed. We've got at least three trees down (2.75 acre lot--haven't looked everywhere yet, as it's fairly soggy out there), but nothing serious. We're in good shape, overall.

Oh...forgot to mention scorpions. The scorpions are coming in, too. Now, THAT, I can do without. Getting hit by a scorpion is an education. The pain is about on a par with a wasp sting, maybe a little worse. The booger is that the pain lasts two or three weeks. No, I haven't gotten stung so far, thank goodness.

No snakes. Haven't you heard? Samuel L.'s got 'em all on a plane!

Grey

P.S.: Actually had a snake in the basement a while back. The poor thing ran afoul of some packing tape that was coming loose from a box; got stuck, in the attempt to get loose it pulled more tape loose from the box, then stuck to that as well. It couldn't get free and eventually died, which got smelly. Usually, it's lizards that come in. We've got several species, but the Eastern 5 lined skinks are the most likely to visit. Haven't seen any lizards yet, which is good. They're the very devil to catch; fast and stealthy.

Happy for you, and thanks for letting us know.

I have to say, the aftermath of this hurricane has overwhelmed me for the last few days. I have visited St. Thomas, St. John's, and Tortolla twice each in the last 15 months and had grown quite fond of the USVI and BVI, met many people, boosted their economy, and was actively looking at real estate on St. John's for when I retire. This has all come to a screeching halt. I am sick to my stomach for all the pain and suffering going on in the Caribbean and Florida. Better days ahead...

My 81 year old father is still sitting in Melbourne, Fl with no power. He won't leave the house. Hopefully he gets power restored today.

The fact there's a Highway To Hell and only a Stairway To Heaven says a lot about anticipated traffic numbers

He did. But the A/C isn't working. Has to wait until Monday to get someone out there. Always something.

I didn't know this:

Antigua and Barbuda -- located southeast of Puerto Rico and where the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea meet -- became a sovereign state in the British commonwealth in 1981. Its population in July was estimated to be 94,731, with 97% of the population living on the island of Antigua, the CIA World Factbook said.

I wonder how Eric Clapton's Crossroads Centre fared in Antigua? I played there in 1995 (the night of the Oklahoma City bombing) and seem to remember driving up a lot of steep mountains. Perhaps it was spared the strongest winds.

There has been a lot of news about how the Brits were slow to respond compared to the French and the Dutch, the other two main colonizers of the Caribbean. Hopefully they can rebuild. I don't know if it's even smart to do so, unless you are willing to go to Richard Branson levels of hurricane security.
