For most of the year, my AOTY was looking like it was going to be Silence Yourself by Savages...but Austra's Olympia has overtaken it these last couple of weeks. This song was the first single from it:

The year's most pleasant surprise to me has been very strong new albums from 5 of industrial (or at least industrial-esque) music's veteran bands: Front Line Assembly, NIN, Skinny Puppy, Filter and a complete jawdropper from VNV Nation.

I also love every song I've heard by that girl Lorde; on the other end of the age spectrum, David Bowie came back with some greatness.

Free songs? Well, Peter Gabriel just posted a finally-completed song from the So sessions called "Courage," and it's like whoa.

My favorite album this year is by a band called SISU. It's called Blood Tears and is full of dark beauty and cool synthy textures.

I agree.

However I can see why it was left off "So". Just doesn't fit the vibe of that record. Red Rain still gives me chills 25 plus years later.

Not much for me this year. 2012 was a good year.

Ludovico Einaudi 'In a Time Lapse' was this year. Nice chill out record or something to put on if I feel like doing a kata workout to music.

Valentina'a Rach Concertos was nice but I didn't like some of the tempo but evidently the conductor was trying to be very exact as to how Rach wanted them done.

I was going to say Vadim Gluzman's Bach Partita album but that was last year.

"It doesn't have to be difficult to be cool" - Mitch Towne

"A great musician can bring tears to your eyes!!!

So can a auto Mechanic." - Stokes Hunt

Yeah, that album was gooooood. When it came to music, women were definitely bringin' it this year.

I'm shocked someone on the forum has heard it. How do you know about them?

I actually heard of them through recommended links on YouTube while I was watching other videos by bands like Austra, Client and How To Destroy Angels.

Wayne Shorter "Without a Net" is probably Jazz Album of the Year.

I also like Dave Douglas "Be Still", Gregory Porter "Liquid Spirit" and Aaron Diehl "The Bespoke Man's Narrative".

The Gregory Porter record was great. Jose James "No Beginning No End" is also in my Top 10.

I'm also loving Who Is William Onyeabor? by the Nigerian funk artist William Onyeabor. Here's a song from it:

And check out this fantastic cover of another of his albums:

Yeah, I checked that out. Very retro-funk meets afrobeat.

Some of my favorites from 2013 include

Tedeschi Trucks Band - Made Up Mind

Dumpstaphunk - Dirty Word

There's another, but I won't mention it. I also like the new Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, but neither of them has any track that's really "sticking." I enjoy listening to them, though.

"I'm so crazy, I don't know this is impossible! Hoo hoo!" - Daffy Duck

"The good news is that once you start piano you never have to worry about getting laid again. More time to practice!" - MOI
