  1. At the risk of making an obvious point--the display of a so-called "hamburger" or tri-gram menu icon versus a horizontal nav bar is generally a toggle in the site scripting, governed by the width of the view port. If you expand the browser window horizontally, at some point the hamburger icon will disappear and the nav bar will pop into view. Shrink the browser window horizontally, the opposite occurs.
  2. FWIW, I currently kick in a few bucks monthly via Patreon. That's in the same ballpark as the amounts I pay to support my local NPR station and a couple of other online information sources. MPN seems like a great deal to me at $50-$60/year. I'd be happy to continue with Patreon or any other subscription model. Maybe free to read; pay to post?
  3. This one got burned into my brain in a very special way. Back in the 90s I had just started providing tech support to commercial editors in a Chicago post house, and I heard this track all day every day for a couple of weeks in a row, from my little office cubby next door to the edit suite. After a while I developed the ability to tune that stuff out, but for the first few days I thought I would lose my mind. Having that experience 3000+ times? OMG.
  4. Agree that closed-back is a better solution for practicing in a noisy environment, although I should say that my experience of ANC headphones is limited to the Bose in-ear and over-ear QuietComfort products. They're great on an airplane, but they sound kind of weird. I wouldn't want to listen to myself playing through them.
  5. Oh, very cool! I have never seen this interview. Thanks, Dave!
  6. One of my favorites, for his playing and songwriting both: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/11/17/arts/music/dave-frishberg-dead.html
  7. Steve, have you tried a speed test after rebooting your machine in safe mode? (Shut down, then restart and immediately hold down the shift key until you see the login window.) If your wifi speed improves in safe mode, then one of the apps or drivers that loads on your machine at startup, but isn't present on your wife's, may be the culprit.
  8. Private equity deals come in a variety of different flavors, and outside investors can be smart or not so smart. It's a mistake to assume that all PE deals are the same, or that this event is disastrous for the customers' interests. I have not seen the deal terms disclosed, but the investment by Providence is characterized as "growth equity" rather than a buyout. Sweetwater, having been very well-managed, and having led the way in the MI industry's shift from bricks-and-mortar to online distribution, has strong growth prospects and no apparent incentive to accept outside investment on unfavorable terms. I would very much like to know what their balance sheet looked like both pre- and post-deal, but I would not expect an over-leveraged Guitar Center-type fiasco.
  9. Can you elaborate on this process please? How did you do that? What springs did you use? Most Electro"s I"ve played don"t feel good until they"re beaten to death FWIW, I've done this exact procedure. It requires modest bench skills at the level of doing PC upgrades and board swaps, for example. To prepare, I would suggest searching the Nord User Forums for guidance and bread crumb trails posted by users who have worked on their own Electros and Stages. Pablo Mastodon has posted incredibly helpful advice on DIY repair projects in various places, including here: https://www.norduserforum.com/nord-stage-forum-f3/ns2-73-compact-eliminating-creaking-t7647.html#p48534 Following the steps I gleaned from reading posts by Pablo and others on the Nord forums, I was able to swap the springs on my E4D in about 90 minutes, using these tools: Torx T20 screwdriver 1/8" or 7/64" hex key small needle-nose pliers 7mm hex nut driver
  10. I recall a couple of years ago chiming in on another discussion about shipping with a mention of SOS Global Express (https://sosglobal.com): https://forums.musicplayer.com/ubbthreads.php/topics/2825686/re-ups-drops-musical-equipment#Post2825686 They are a specialty shipper used by broadcast networks, major events producers, music tours, etc. Is that the vendor you're thinking of?
  11. Peter Martin's Open Studio (http://www.openstudiojazz.com) is having a Black Friday sale on courses and memberships, running through Sunday 11/29 at 11:59pm PST. 70% off courses; 50% off memberships.
  12. I keep thinking it isn't possible for 2020 to suck any more than it already does, and I keep being proved wrong.
  13. The incremental cost of doing ProTools multitrack capture of a show like this is pretty low, so people often do that and then remix in post while they're editing the video. After a couple of close listens I do think the mix was polished up in post, which is *not* to suggest that any of the live performances were re-recorded. There may be a couple of spots where mix levels don't seem to track the BGVs' mic proximity 100%, but all the lip sync that I can see is totally solid the entire time. The video production values are, let's say, not quite up to the level of the musicianship, but that's kind of the norm for videos of live club performances. The mix is killer, though. I'd be interested to know what the actual work flow was.
  14. Check out the awesome Gordon Mote video Steve Nathan just posted in another thread. For the last six minutes or so (starting around 22:50), Mote speaks in a very direct and lucid way about phrasing, and playing as if you were singing. Very relevant to this subject, I believe, and very much in agreement with several of the posts above.
  15. I'm glad the denizens of KC are generally cool with occasional venting by forum regulars. My only beef with the OP is that the titles of threads like this should have "OT - " prepended. It helps everyone decide which threads to read. IMO this is basic forum etiquette (and it lowers your risk of, well, annoying other forum members).
  16. The SpaceStation has been discussed at length on the forum. (A Google search qualified with "site:musicplayer.com" is your friend.) Here's a link to the mother of all SpaceStation threads: https://forums.musicplayer.com/ubbthreads.php/topics/2602284 It may not be the best choice for reproducing acoustic piano sounds. Nice sig, by the way!
  17. There is speculation that Apple will absorb the tariffs in order to maintain current pricing. I personally would not give too much weight to the tariff question when making a purchase decision. For one thing, Apple is sitting on about $225 billion in cash at the moment, giving it plenty of room to absorb the cost of tariffs without imposing significant short-term price increases, and also allowing it to alter its manufacturing strategy in response to geopolitical changes, as Kuo mentions in his investor note. In fact, depending how Apple sees elasticity of demand w/r/t price, it might actually make more money selling a bunch of machines at a lower profit margin than it would selling a smaller number of machines with the full cost of tariffs baked into the price. Also, the OP mentioned in an earlier post that he hopes to use his next machine for most of the coming decade. With this kind of time horizon, I would worry less about price and more about longevity. For this reason I would also avoid buying a previous-generation MBP (even though I myself own and cherish a 2015 15" Retina MBP).
  18. Moar details from the rumor mill: https://www.macworld.com/article/3411979/16-inch-macbook-pro-display-keyboard-specs-release.html
  19. At this point it's still speculation rather than knowledge, but Ming-Chi Kuo (a respected industry analyst with a track record of making accurate though not infallible calls about Apple product announcements) believes a new 16" MBP will launch during Q4 of this year, featuring a new scissor keyboard mechanism to replace the much-criticized butterfly keyboard Apple has been using for the last couple of years: https://www.macrumors.com/2019/07/25/kuo-16-inch-macbook-pro-scissor-keyboard/ Based on this information, I myself would consider putting off the purchase of a new MBP for a couple of months. There's been lot of discussion about mechanical failures caused by dust and debris getting into Apple's current keyboards, but these concerns aside, I just don't like the feel of the butterfly keyboard and would be glad to have the chance of a better one. It's a highly subjective thing, though. I know people who have no problem with (and even like) the butterfly keyboards.
  20. Not to be alarmist, but if I understand correctly (I'm not a health care professional), the behavior you have described can sometimes be a sign of frontotemporal dementia. Unfortunately, people with this condition are very often unaware that there is anything wrong with them. I think it might be good to suspend judgment about your friend's frequent expressions of inappropriate humor until you have had a chance to spend some time with him, to see if anything else about his behavior seems worrisome. Perhaps you might check in with his family members or other friends, to see if they have noticed anything amiss?
  21. I pretty sure there actually is a transcription somewhere in that three-booklet Hal Leonard series, "Dr. John Teaches New Orleans Piano," but if memory serves it has a different title -- "Song for Mother" or something like that. Edit -- Confirmed. I just checked, and it's near the beginning of Volume 3 of that set.
  22. Awesome news. Deep gratitude to dB, Jim Quinn, and all this forum's stalwart contributors.
  23. The current owners bought and essentially gut-renovated an existing production facility. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Park_Road_Post https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Film_Unit
  24. In a post on 12/22/16, Aspen said that production run #9 of the SS3 was the first to incorporate the new digital switching power supply and plywood cabinet construction that characterize what many people refer to as v.5. I don't think he mentioned the exact dates of production run #9, but his last post on KC (dated 2/3/17) offered this guidance regarding dates and serial numbers: The last 4 digits of the serial number tell you the month and year of it's production; so Run #10 made in October of last year will read '1016'.
