MidLifeCrisis
Congrats Definitely takes guts to make that step, especially with a family. I wish you the best of luck and hope things work out well for you. Don't forget your buddies here at KC when you are a star. daBowsa
Thanks guys. The kicker of the whole thing is I bought an RV and am dragging the wife, 2 kids, and dog around the country with me! We've got about a year or two before the oldest is in school, so it was sort of a now-or-never opportunity. Maybe it'll work out, maybe it won't. We'll just have to wait and see. I'm really excited! linwood
I did the same thing in the early '80's. Gina, my daughter, was just 2 and I got a gig doing the playboy club thing. I'd play the one at Century City for 6 weeks, then go to one in St. Pete, and then to the Casino in AC, then back to LA. I did that for a couple years and drove to each place in a VW bus with my wife and Gina. So for gina it was Disneyland, Disney World and the beach. Out with it brother! Two bands, two sets. Headlining with Badfish, A Tribute to Sublime playing mostly keys, trumpet, and some guitar. Opening for ourselves with our original project Scotty Don't, playing mostly guitar. Here's a little clip of me pulling some double duty, Electro73, Micron, and SG. Steve Force
I went freelance several years ago.... IMO, there is such thing as a "stable" job, just jobs that are being evaluated for elimination (or "right-shored".) At least when you freelance, you are constantly marketing and looking for your next engagement. Actually gives me a better sense of security. Don't worry--you will be fine. Enjoy! MikeT156
Congrats DaBowse! I went on the road full time as a solo act back in the eighties, for about 3 years. My day job had dried up, and I always wanted to do it, so I contacted an agent and off I went. As a musician, its something that you just have to do. Good luck man, enjoy the ride. Mike T. wmp
Fired my boss six months ago. A little less money and a lot less aggravation. Not such a brave move for me, since I don't have the family responsibility. Of course it's a bad idea, but if you can make it float and you enjoy it, how bad can it be? I'm sure you had no problem convincing the dog or the kids, but selling this to the wife is impressive. --wmp
Aidan
I went freelance just over a year ago, after years of working in the press. My income is now divided in around equal thirds between music, web design and freelance journalism. I only wish I'd had the guts to do it years ago. I've never worked so hard (need to be dragged out of the home office sometimes by a despairing wife) but feel magnitudes happier. And no one day is the same as the next. Good luck with your venture! Joe Muscara
I might mention that I quit my last job in 2002 to work for myself as a web developer, and while it's not as lucrative as I would like, I wouldn't trade it for anything. No boss breathing down my neck, I'm in complete control, and if it's a slow day, I don't have to stay in the office just because of the hours (though I don't take the opportunity to practice as much as I should). The brief moments I think about getting a "real job" quickly turn to "why would I want to do that???" So again, congratulations, good luck, and have fun! I did it once for a year, I didn't want to go back to my old job but I only had a 1 year sabbatical. I just never had the cajones to up and quit and make it my life. I'm green with envy!
