  1. I’ve heard Scott Robinson play this with Maria Schneider’s group.
  2. There has been some criticism that the movie is a thinly veiled, fictionalized story about Marin Alsop. Mahler 6 gave us “Stop! Hammer time!” long before “Can’t Touch This”. Enjoy! https://www.classicfm.com/composers/mahler/guides/hammer-gifs-symphony-6/
  3. Adan, if you’re thinking of the judge in My Cousin Vinny, that’s Fred Gwynn who’s best know as Herman Munster. Re: Ted Cassidy
  4. Not yet but soon. They had me at Cate Blanchett and the synopsis. Then I find out Mahler 5 is central in the film and it was “TAKE MY MONEY!” We trumpet players love Mahler 5. The opening solo is on every principal trumpet audition list. Phil Smith (retired NY Phil principal) is the gold standard.
  5. Love Burlington! Middle daughter has her undergrad degree from UVM. Always had a great time visiting during those 4 years. Breakfasts at Henry’s Diner were some of the best ever including the all time champion corned beef hash. Her department’s graduation ceremony didn’t have a memorable speaker. I wanted to crash the environmental studies ceremony that had Victor Wooten.
  6. Consider a free trial subscription. The content is that good. The article is way too long to copy & paste plus the links would probably be lost.
  7. This is an incredible examination of Stevie’s Talking Book on its 50th anniversary. Includes song by song comments from David Sanborn, Robert Glasper, Jacob Collier, Esperanza Spalding, Cory Henry, and many others. Their comments have interactive elements. Ex. when someone mentions a modulation, that comment links to audio of that part of the song. Very cool. I hope this is accessible behind the NYT paywall. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2022/10/27/arts/music/stevie-wonder-talking-book.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare
  8. Watched this on PBS Friday night. Very highly recommended. The doc is centered around a conversation between Ron Carter & Jon Batiste with a duet on “Sweet Lorraine”.
  9. Add this to the long list of reasons why western NY loves Josh Allen. It’s immediately after the game. He’s a incredible player and an even better person.
  10. @Dr Nursers Excellent! Would love to hear if you had a good time. It’s a beautiful club & the food is very good.
  11. There’s a NFL rule about games on ESPN or other pay services. For the teams playing, a home market broadcast TV station can televise the feed over the air making it available free to local fans. For example, the last Mon Night Football game was aired in Buffalo on WGRZ and in Nashville on Fox 17. Home market has a 75 mile limit. So, if you live in an NFL market, you can watch all home team games with an antenna.
  12. I’ve seen Hiromi a few times and never warmed up to her music. Technically astounding but nothing that speaks to me. The video of this project was interesting. In August, I saw her in an extraordinary setting, an all star Newport Jazz Festival tribute to founder George Wein. Here she’s comping (!) with Christian McBride, Trombone Shorty, & Lewis Nash on “St James Infirmary”. Both Hiromi & Shorty came in just for this set. I have video but the file is too large.
  13. Greetings from Bills territory! Though the stadium is a 75 minute drive, training camp is 5 min from my house. I’m a more moderate Bills fan (and sports fan in general). I don’t own team gear and only get a little emotionally invested in the games except for the Super Bowl losses, the Tennessee “Music City Miracle” playoff loss, and last season’s “13 seconds”. It’s great when win puts everyone here in a good mood. I had big band rehearsal last night. Fortunately, our 3rd trumpet had the section enjoying the game on the stand next to me.
  14. From Questlove on FB. He went to high school with Joey, Christian McBride, and The Roots’ Tariq Trotter. Joey Defrancesco (4/10/71-8/25/22) (Pt 1 of 2) I grew up in the Doo Wop world. So basically all the musicians ive ever known were WAY older. Like born in the 50s playing with the likes of my dad & the bands of his era. I thought I was a big deal being as though I knew NO KID my age playing an instrument. Kids were into sports by the time I was 9-10. So I latched on to the music of older people. Never the stuff kids my age were into. I had an adults knowledge of music by 1978. Which when at age 15 seeing Joey play that damn DX7 on the news was so mind blowing to me. I literally yelled to my mom: “MOM SOMEONE MY AGE CAN PLAY AN INSTRUMENT & HE GOES TO PERFORMING ARTS!!!!!” ——I been campaigning for a minute to go to @CAPAhs ——I was about to be in the 11th grade & the school that I was attending (hello #citycenteracademy on 17th & Spruce) had NO music program. I wanted to play music with kids my age. Maybe I could teach em a thang or two. HA HA HA I swore I was finna run shit when I came to this school. Dog: Joey changed that shit on DAY ONE (I started school a week later cause I was busy being a “big deal” 🙄on the road w my dad—so my first day was their first week in school & I had to make sure I was hearing correct: you are telling me THEE #MilesDavis pulled 3 kids outta THIS school to play on television?!?!?!?!?——lol this prime american arrogance of me to think I was THE ONLY human with a 7 in the 3rd digit of his birth year who had the talent to back it up. Man....it was the OPPOSITE —kids YOUNGER than me named “Mcbride” & “Dozier” & a kid EVEN younger from a school in MY borough of West Philly named “ROBERTS” bout to hand me my ass on a platter?!!!! Wtf!!!! Jesus CHRIST I had some growing up to do. Joey literally pulled ZERO punches in the first 2 semesters. Called me out INSTANTLY——(to be continued)
  15. Maybe/maybe not. I’ve seen trumpeter Nicholas Payton comp on Rhodes with the left hand, trumpet with the right.
  16. James Taylor’s horn section is Lou Marini & Walt Fowler. Pretty great with those 2 but Fowler does something VERY cool. He occasionally augments the horns with keyboard brass in his left hand. Sounds amazing! I’ve tried this at home but I can only do it if I transpose the keyboard to Bb.
  17. As a trumpet player, I’d have greater respect for a keyboard player converting iconic horn lines to ripping organ chords than ROMpler brass. The best guy I’ve seen (video, not in person) play decent horn parts on keys is Wix Wickens. There’s a Keyboard mag video interview that goes into detail about how he does it.
  18. Sept 30 is opening night for Jazz at Lincoln Center in the Time Warner Building at Columbus Circle. The Jazz At Lincoln Center Orch is premiering a new piece by Wynton Marsalis, The Shanghai Suite. Hearing that band in Rose Theatre is an inspiring experience. There are no bad seats in the house. At Dizzy’s Club in JALC, Sean Jones is playing 9/25. Sean played trumpet in the JLCO for 10 years and always has a good band. The fantastic pianist Sullivan Fortner is there 9/26-27. I saw him this past weekend both with his group and with Cecile McLorin Salvant at Newport. The food at Dizzy’s is very good.
  19. Buffalo Bills training camp opened days ago. It’s a few miles from my house in Pittsford near Rochester. To say Josh Allen is beloved in western New York is an understatement. All players at camp make time at the end of every session to sign autographs. Allen obviously gets the largest crowds. This morning, he saw 2 brothers waiting as he was signing, taking selfies, etc. They had nothing for him to sign. Allen took off his cleats, signed them, and gave one to each of the kids, and went to the locker room in his socks. Allen’s stock just went way up.
  20. I’m the guy who listens, off & on, to someone playing during cocktails, dinner, etc. I always walk over to offer a short, specific compliment between songs because it’s a nice thing to do and everyone likes to be appreciated.
