I live 5 minutes away from Oak Hill. I’ve played the championship East Course (maybe 15 years ago) and the West Course. I watched at home. Didn’t want to deal with remote parking & shuttles, crowds, etc.
If you want to see the action, TV is the only way to watch everything. The downside of TV is losing the sense of how far the pros hit a ball. A 300 yard drive in the fairway is unbelievable. If you go to the event, you either need to pick 1 or 2 holes to spend the day or, if you move around, you’re up against crowds moving around. If you have access to a suite with food, drink, and bathrooms, that’s the way to go.
I don’t know if these items made the national coverage:
Buffalo Bills’ Josh Allen & Von Miller hung at Oak Hill all week. Allen recently became a member at the club. The Bills training camp is maybe a mile away during summer.
Rory McIlroy’s wife is from Rochester and her family is here. They’re Oak Hill members and now Rory is, too.
It’s impossible not to love the Michael Block story. His emotions showed in every interview. For some dinners including Sat night when he was part of the 54 hole leaderboard, Block went to the Pittsford Pub (burgers, sandwiches, wings, beer) and hung with golf fans. He earned $288,000 from the Championship, gets a spot in next year’s Championship, and was invited to play in next week’s tour event & the Canadian Open. I’m guessing more tournament invites will follow.
If you’re wondering, the Oak Hill membership initiation fee is $70,000 with $800 monthly dues (that doesn’t include food & beverages) plus any assessments for improvements. If you’re under age 35, it’s $5,000/$400.
