  1. New Orleans Jazz Museum last time I was there they had Fess' RMI Electric Piano, Louis Armstrong's first cornet, Dr. John's piano, and Fat Domino's piano among many other things. I've not been to the museums on Jackson Square on opposite sides of the church, but I plan to. It's not a museum but Congo Square at Louis Armstrong Park is the deep roots of the music, where it all started. Intermittent forumite @smanzella plays around town sometimes, I've met up with him a couple of times. I'd also look for John Boutte, Tom McDermott, Antoine Diel (who you might catch with @Josh Paxton accompanying him). Here's something Josh wrote about visiting back in 2019, I don't know how much still holds true but it probably still has some useful info. What I like about New Orleans is that even if you do none of what I mentioned, I bet you'll find lots of great stuff to see, do, listen to, and eat anyway.
  2. I can't imagine people playing acoustic jazz with IEMs. Well, I can, but it doesn't seem likely. I doubt the venues Charlie of the Cats would be bringing this group to would be conducive to that, either. Using IEMs in a small space with everything miked doesn't seem like it would work well as I would guess it would be bleeding like crazy, and it would also require a lot of set up to mic everything since everyone is acoustic. As far as using anything like near-field monitors, many moons ago I blew out the tweeters on my near-field monitors playing with a guitar player at my place. Make sure whatever you use has ample power for whatever volumes may occur.
  3. I bet Paul would love to have gotten back together with John and worked on stuff back in the 80s, see if a real reunion would have been feasible, or just work together as old friends and brothers. It's probably more heartbreaking for him than any of us that it was taken away from him so prematurely. This is as close as he can get.
  4. (my emphasis) This is referencing a cassette that had three songs on it, Free as a Bird, Real Love (both released on the 1995 Anthology), and Now and Then (likely this song, according to the article). So the voice is really John's, and it seems he wanted Paul to hear these three. Perhaps he was thinking of getting back together. He was in a good place, it seems, when he was murdered. He might have been ready. My question is, how is it a Beatles release if there's no George? Does Paul have tapes of George playing what they tried to do with the tune in 1995 before the gave up on the track?
  5. Billy Payne of Little Feat has been doing a lot of podcasts lately. I keep adding one-offs to my listening queue. He must be an easy get now. I've asked on a Feat group how might contact him, but you might know the channels already.
  6. I've seen some people comment on the part of the video where the guy is wearing Vision Pro and taking the image with the headset of the kids, but that seemed isolating. But I wonder, why would taking that image/video or whatever it's called be limited to the Vision Pro? Maybe it has a couple of cameras it's using to capture, but it's not like it needs 360° or even 180°. They're pretty close to a 2D plane. So I wonder if future iPhones and perhaps iPads could capture Vision Pro content as well. Vision Pro can already display a Panorama captured by iPhone to make you feel like you're there again. Imagine if anyone with an iPhone (post 14) could capture this content and send it to someone with a a Vision Pro, or of course use it themselves without using the Vision Pro to capture it.

  9. Yeah, but I didn't see the movies you named so there you go. (I did see Total Recall but I don't remember that bit.) Most of the gestures were what you describe, probably because Apple knows that it's not ergonomic to be holding our arms out all the time, which has been their reasoning for not making a touchscreen Mac. But, their video seemed to show a virtual keyboard at one point right before they said it would work with a Magic Keyboard and Mouse. Or Trackpad, or whatever hardware they named. It was the guy in the office at his desk. I'm picturing the console right in front of you like you would use a real one. Interacting with objects at about table height in front of you wouldn't be so bad, the trick is not actually touching something yet it responds to you. Is that feasible?
  10. "Apps" overstates this because there's No Way that Apple will let that kind of app on the App Store. Only if governments force adoption of outside app stores could it possibly happen, but for now, Apple will say no just like they do for the iOS platforms. However, you can do anything you want in a web browser, so if porn creators can figure out a way to make virtual sex happen in a browser that looks like you're there, that would be the ticket. I think of Brainstorm myself. To undersell this device, it's a big, immersive display. I could see it becoming very cool, especially if it gets more 3D applications. Most of what Apple showed was screens and application windows. They did show some 3D objects, but what you really want is not only the background of feeling like you're in a space, but all the objects in the space with you as well in ways that you can interact with them. One thing I kept thinking about was Logic Pro. Imagine a visionOS version that lets you control the mixer like a real mixer. Reach out and adjust faders and knobs as if you were sitting in front of one. You could literally build a virtual studio with racks for your plug ins. Yeah, I want one, but I have a list of things I want but don't need.
  11. The T - HANKS banner was very cute and likable, like he is, but I could see it getting overlooked by people. Would a Patreon banner ad on pages like where I'm seeing the MPN Shop right now that asks for sign ups be too obnoxious? It could rotate with the Shop ad, and maybe get more eyeballs. Ideally, it would appear in the other fora as well, so some plank-spankers, etc., would sign up. Clearly there was an awareness issue about Patreon that this thread has helped with.
  12. Yeah, dB owns the site through an LLC, as he posted about 12 hours ago, and he has explained earlier in the thread about the kinds of things he believes he/MPN needs in order to grow the site, which require money. It's not a specific number of "hosting costs this much, having an admin to run the site costs this much, etc." Check out his posts in this thread for better details. Although we've managed to deal with them pretty well, it does strike me that a subscription would be useful for stopping spammers. I can't imagine someone paying to spam us. OTOH, if someone joined and was a total $#!^#3@& (shithead), do we have to give them their money back? Both are minor considerations but thoughts that I had reading this thread. Social media is designed to keep you there, the dopamine hit and everything. That's why when someone tries to share a thread from here on there, it gets discussed there instead. Even worse, people might not even come here to read the post/thread, they'll just comment there on what they think the post/thread is about. (I keep thinking the phrase I'm looking for is "barrier to entry" but I'm sure there's another one, but the point is that it's easier for people to stay on a platform than go look at another one especially if they've never been here before.) I have lots of friends on social media who are keyboard players, and aside from the ones I met through KC, none of them have ever been here to my knowledge and the platform they're on is enough for them. I also have some friends from KC who rarely if ever come here anymore but are active on some social media platform. I can't blame them. Time online can be a real time suck. Ads don't bother me if they're relevant and not annoying (you know the ones). I find it interesting that some of you say things about Patreon vs. subscription since they're pretty similar. I think some have said they'd do a subscription but not or haven't done Patreon. If you're okay with a subscription you could do Patreon in the meantime. Patreon has been "I need to figure out what I want to contribute to KC/MPN" for a while. I'm currently doing three. One is for a podcast that I really enjoy but I'm not crazy about the guy's music so I support him with that instead, another is for another podcast that has been life-changing for me and doesn't run ads, and the third is for a band that I love (and found out about from KC). In that case, they have levels that give you different access to stuff. It's really a fan club. I don't know if there are possible things MPN could do like that, or of we're better off sticking with the current, "if you love MPN, please consider contributing." [BTW, whenever someone says, "for the price of a cup of coffee a month, you can help us", I'm useless because I still think that's 25 cents. ] That first podcast has an interesting pitch. He does tell you about the Patreon, but then he also suggests things like telling a friend about the podcast, and leaving a rating where you get a podcast. That last one doesn't help here, but telling friends about KC or MPN would. Of course, Dave has posted this in KC, the biggest group here, but I wonder how the regulars in other topic areas feel.
  13. I'm surprised no one has mentioned Mission: Impossible… I often tease my wife asking if she wants to skip it when it comes on. "NO!"
  14. Do you mean so that it doesn't work itself out? After I added a Thunderbolt 3/4 hub to my iMac, I realized that was a problem. In fact, I had previously had problems where if I moved my external SSD drive (which is my boot drive and connected via TB3), it would often disconnect and thus cause a kernel panic. I didn't realize it was a flaw of the USB-C type connector in general until I added the hub to my system. The maker of my hub, OWC/MacSales, sells "Clingons" that screw into the hub and hold the cable. They also have adhesive on one side if you prefer or need to use that. It's a bummer that this small, convenient, reversible connector style that fixes most of the issues with the USB-A connector has this issue.
  15. I hope so. I just started going in 2020, and I'd like it to continue for many reasons. We can do a lot on the interwebz nowadays, but actual, in-person networking just can't be beat. And people (not just end users, but dealers) want to be able to touch, hear, and play music and audio gear as appropriate. There is also the added bonus of what I'll throw under "sessions," whether it's hearing George Massenburg talk about Atmos in the Neumann booth-room and demo the tracks he mixed, or those sessions like the ones I heard you do @Anderton in 2020, it's hard to get those anywhere else, especially that conveniently.
  16. I have the iPad mini (6th generation) and I love it, but I haven't used it for live playing yet. The audio apps I've noodled with (Ravenscroft, PianoTeq, Animoog, OB-Xd, VB3m, Model D) have all been fine though. I'm very happy to see this announcement from Apple, and hoping that means some version of MainStage isn't far behind.
  17. I know what forum this thread is in, but there are keyboard players who sometimes need tubes, too. Both my Hammond A-100 and Leslie have a bunch of them. I'm glad to see this guy & company is trying to do this, it's always good to have another source, whether or not different brands actually sound different or not. I'm sorry that I just missed they heyday of tubes, but I remember seeing tube testers in stores when I was a kid and wanting to play with them. It's good this industry isn't completely dead.
  18. FWIW, NAMM 2023 was much busier than 2022. The downstairs north hall was busier than I've seen it in 2020 or 2022 (the only times I've been except a summer NAMM in Austin). Most of the vendors I spoke to said they thought it was a good show. One vendor did not, said it was all end users and they don't need to spend that kind of money at NAMM for that. I think 2024 will be telling for the future of the show…
  19. A good teacher meets you where you are. If the two of you aren't a good match for any reason, you don't have to stick with them. It's not like you're getting married. Good luck and have fun. Let us know how it goes.
