  1. Glad to here your band mate is alright! The same thing happened to me last summer. I was sitting in with a band that had two bass players who would switch off when one was singing. It just so happened that one of the bass players was out of town and his flight got delayed and he could not make it back so the show goes on without him. Well,it was an outdoor street festival and a very hot July day, when half way through our last set the bass player falls out. He tries to get up and keep playing but he cannot stand. The horn players help him to the back of the stage. I pick up playing left hand bass and we finish the song and the next several song I am covering the bass. We ended early and the EMT guys were back stage with our bass player and finally stabilized him and talked him in to going to the hospital. He had heart surgery the next day and back on stage in about a month. SCARY to say the least!!!
  2. Steve, ITGITC is still around and will likely pop in at some point. We catch a cold brew every once in a while!
  3. Vonner, you made the right choice. Egos are an unfortunate part of the business but when they effect the music in negative ways, it gets ugly quick! Run from that one!
  4. Steve, First off condolences for your loss. I have spent my life in NC and mostly the Triangle Area. (Durham, Chapel Hill, Raleigh). There are many small surrounding communities that would be close enough to both work and the coast. Hilllsborough, Pittsboro, Carrboro are closer to Chapel Hill. That music scene in those areas has been vibrant for years and is a bit more eclectic with a younger influence. Durham downtown is really booming with new restaurants and music venues, but there are areas around Durham that are more dangerous. (Higher crime rate in Durham than surrounding towns.) Raleigh is more the new yuppie area of affluent young folks. Around Raleigh are many small towns. Cary, Apex, Fuquay Varina, (South) Wake Forest, Knightdale, Windell, (North East) Garner, and Clayton (East). You will want to see how the traffic flows to where ever you work because some areas are jammed up every day!!! Charlotte is much like Raleigh only on a larger scale. Hope this helps some, ALSO you may want to look at Oriental, NC to park your sailboat. I good friend/ guitar player just retired there because of his love for sailing year round.
  5. I was on a cruise last October with a band and their fans. It was about 9pm and the piano In the hall where the photographers try to get you to pose so they can Take your money. All the photographers had packed it up and there was the piano. I sat down and started playing and security was coming from both sides. My girlfriend saw this and was waiting for them to bust me. The female security Guard had asked me to quit just as the Captain stepped up and said let him play, and get him anything he wants from the bar. I got a nice cocktail and Kept playing for about an hour!!!
  6. I too spent years doing Blues and Jump Blues which is what I enjoy the most. Never made squat and didn't have more than 40-50 shows a year. About 15 years ago started doing more dance band/cover music. The money has been sufficient enough to pay my bills. I am certainly not well known except in the little genre I am currently in. My main band covers Motown, Beach Music, Soul, Jump Blues, Funk and Disco and there are only a hand full of songs I dislike. But they are just 3 minutes out of my life every now and then. The money is far better, but it takes 5 or more different bands to make it work. Last year I did 170 shows and this year I should be somewhere near that many.
  7. Sorry you have to go the surgery route. Follow the Dr and PT orders and use ice when you can. Getting old is not for sissies!!!
  8. Contact Markeyboard, he made up a bunch of tip adaptors (far better than any I bought elsewhere). It works great on Roland now!!!
  9. QSC Mix 16 digital mixer would work great for this application. I love mine and you can set up different scenes so that when you add more people or speakers you don't have to reconfigure every time!
  10. Thank you gentlemen so much for your endless effort to keep this forum alive!!! May I be the first to Congratulate you with a BEER!!!! It's on me!!!
  11. I use this box from Harbor Freight sturdy waterproof and holds it all. https://www.harborfreight.com/4800-Weatherproof-Protective-Case-X-Large-64250.html
  12. Tower of Power Soul Side Of Town. So much more like the old stuff. Soul with a Capitol S!!!!
  13. If FOH has an extra monitor mix you could send your Keys DI to FOH and have him send you a monitor mix. It is especially nice when they have a digital board and router you can hook your smart phone/iPad into so you control your own mix. I do this with several bands with either a powered speaker or IEM.
  14. Possibly, but the reason I left was because the band was not growing and had no direction. The problem has remained the same to this day. I think if the band leader didn't have a good paying tech job he might have expanded/grown his market. But I moved on to bigger and better things!
  15. Good work DB and JQ!!! Can't wait to use the search function!!!
  16. I have been faced with this on several occasions and looks like I may face it again before the summer is out! The first time it happened I was hurt! But like you sometime later I get a call to play with the same band and got about 6 months of work out of them before they did it again. I Figured out they wanted someone to make every show. Now with three other bands I fill in with both are trying to find a permanent solution to the keyboard chair. And since none of can afford me they are searching for players. But they don't work enough or have a bad reputation and can't seem to fill those slots. I will take it as long as it is there and if it goes away, I just might slow down a bit!
  17. Hoping to try loading into Pro Tools a friend has and see what we have. Thanks guys but I may have more questions later!!!
  18. I know it hurts like H$$L, as I was in a car accident several years ago and broke three ribs and my sternum! That was a Friday night and I was at work Tuesday as a one armed massage therapist!!! I would take Aleve (Naproxen Sodium) for pain as on the bottle ( 1000mg) and rest when you can. It took me several weeks before I could lift even little things. How you heal quickly!!!
  19. I have some recording sessions from 2008 that are in Pro Tools (possibly version 8 or lower) that I have regained possession of. However the engineers computer has been giving him problems and when he got me the files they cannot be opened by Presonus Studio One. They seem to be proprietary ProTools. Example AIFF (Icon)_____________ AIFF(icon) ________________AIFF(icon)__________AIFF(icon) Back Voc1_01.aif ___Back Voc 1-Gain_01.aif_______Bass_01.aif _______DM5Sn_01.aif I am told I can load it into Protools Version 9 or less and then extract them in a different format that will work with other DAW's. Is this true? AND What format would that be. (I am totally unfamiliar with ProTools and my friend who has the program I hope to do this with is a novice as well. What I am asking is can someone walk us through this process? I have 5 songs with multiple tracks I would like to do this with.
  20. A little history lesson. Back in the 70's I was a full time player in a local cover band about 25 years old and I remember making about $8,500.00. We played probably 80- 120 or so shows a year. In todays money that equals about $37,500. That equates to about $312-$440 per show. I know many musicians that work for $100-$150 a show and work 3-5 days a week with basically cover bands. I know of folks who tour with national acts that in years past made $500 a show. Unfortunately there are not many of those national acts gigs out there. Maybe this will help. The sad part is some musicians are still playing for what we made in the 70's. Definition of a musician: One who carries $3000 worth of gear to a $100 gig in a $500 car!!!
  21. Joe Sample with Crusaders all Rhodes lead!!! Various artist on Rhodes
  22. Red and Costly, that is all I can see!
  23. I've done that in the past with the Motif!! 1/4 in wrong spot!
  24. So I am looking for a replacement for my Motif! I have always been impressed with Kurzweil strings and horns and synth abilities. It seems the Forte started out as more a for lack of knowledge a Nord Clone if you will. With strong Pianos, usable Organ etc. I have not found much on the other sounds. Should I consider the Forte to use for my Stings, Horns, Synth needs? Is there a better option available?
