I heard Billy Horpe's " Children of the Sun" on the radio .I remember when that song hit ( 1979 ,1980'ish) and it sounded so cool . Kind of a one hit wonder with really cool production .

Anyone else remember this tune and have insight to the production ? or the song itself ?

Can anyone find a midi sequence ?

Any other one hit tunes to speak of ?

I thought Jane Child's "Don't Wanna Fall in Love" was a great bit of synth-based pop. But, it was "one and done" for Jane's time on the charts. I could have done without the nose chain thing.

Dream Academy - "Life In A Northern Town"

Taco - "Puttin' On The Ritz"

"I had to have something, and it wasn't there. I couldn't go down the street and buy it, so I built it."

Depeche Mode - Just can't get enough

Yello - The Race, Oh Yeah (???)

Axel F...

Propaganda - Eye to Eye

Human Leauge - Don't you want me

Chaka Khan - Feel for you

Vanity 6 - Nasty Girl

Forrest - Rock the Boat (Hues Company cover)

Ryan Paris - Dolce Vita

Donna Summer - I feel Love (OK, not her only hit, but for sure an important synth hit)

Mr Mister - Broken Wings

Guilty pleasure: Nik Kershaw "Wouldn't It Be Good"

Dano, that Billy Thorpe song was a hit on AOR radio but probably didn't get much play on CHR. Probably falls in the same league as one-hit wonders like Aldo Nova "Fantasy", Head East "Never Been Any Reason", Tony Carey/Planet P "Why Me".

"Runaway" - by Del Shannon. Cool Musitron solo by Max Crook. The first hit song to use a synth.

"Midnight Express" - Movie soundtrack from Georgio Moroder.

"Popcorn" - corny (hehe) but catchy instrumental

"Miami Vice" - TV theme by Jan Hammer

"Frankenstein" - Edgar Winter. One of the all time great 1 hit synth instrumentals.

99 Luftbaloons - Nena

Whip It - Devo

Perfect Way - Scritti Politti

Pump Up the Volume - MARRS

Voices Carry - Till Tuesday

Electric Avenue - Eddie Grant

Video Killed the Radio Star - the Buggles

Too Shy - Kajagoogoo

White Horse - Laid Back

Obsession - Animotion

I don't think Depeche Mode or Human League would qualify as one-hit wonders.

True, but did you know that "Jump" was the first synth based song done by Van Halen and, ironically, their only #1 song.

Frankie and the Knockouts - Sweetheart. Great synth lead that I believe was overdubbed MiniMoog solos. With that hit I thought this band was going to give synth players a lot of chances to show off on stage when playing in cover bands. Alas, they never had another hit that I can think of.

Frankenstein
Great hit, lots of synths, but not a one hit wonder. The synth/drum breakdown is classic. It should be required listening for any kid that wants to play and program a synth. Among other songs by Edger Winter I loved Free Ride.

"I can't wait" - Nu Shoes
One of my all time favorite songs. I saw them on a show about one hit wonders.

Yeah b, I was totally in the #1 hit song mode on that one going by the thread title...That's why all the pop stuff I posted. No sweat though.

Hey expanding on your point, I wonder what would would have happened if V.H. had became a mostly synth pop band from that point onward? Eeewwww.

Thank gawddd for 'Panama' on that Album huh?!

And "Hot For Teacher".

"I'll Wait" is a great overloaded synth tune on that album.

p.s. I had heard from a reliable source at the time that Michael McDonald had some part in the writing of "Jump"

Strange coincidence - I have that article right in front of me! I dropped a bottle of window polish on a bunch of old Keyboard Magazines, and checking how they did, this was the one that took the hit. The feature presentation reads "Brace yourself for a burst of raw synth rock, classical chops and provocative opinions; Jane Child, the first new keyboard star of the 90´s and one of the most impressive talents to scale the dance charts in years has arrived." Keyboard report: Yamaha SY-55, Instructional column; "Digital sampling" and "street smarts", advise on what to look for when buying your first keyboard.
