3 desert island synthesizers

Recommended Posts

If you could have 3, and only 3, synths to make your music, which would they be? By "synth" I mean the broad definition that includes hardware, software, modules (but not the sample-playback only kind), workstations, modular, whatever.

My own choices would be.........................

Kurzweil K2661 fully loaded

MOTM modular

Reaktor

Since I make CDs in my studio, playing all the sounds myself, I think these 3 would give me the broadest range of great potential sounds, with one true analog to boot.

What would you use as a power supply on the island?

No guitarists were harmed during the making of this message.

In general, harmonic complexity is inversely proportional to the ratio between chording and non-chording instruments.

Creamware PowerPulsar, fully loaded or at least with the Modular III

Yamaha FS1R. I'll have plenty of time on my hands to learn how to program this thing. Between these two, I don't think I'm getting bored.

I'll leave the third open for now, but it's 88-key weighted.

If we're talking strictly synths/keyboards:

Yamaha S90

Korg CX-3

Emu Vintage Keys (my experience with VA's is very limited, so I'm listing that instead -- some great lead sounds)

If we're talking any keyboard instrument:

Steinway 9-foot concert grand

Fender Rhodes 73

Hammond A100/B3/C3 -- whichever I could get

David

PS: The melodica is the perfect desert island keyboard! :thu::D

My Site

Nord Electro 5D, Novation Launchkey 61, Logic Pro X, Mainstage 3, lots of plugins, fingers, pencil, paper.

k2600

yamaha EX5

virus kc

i'm a lucky SOB, i've got all 3 (the virus is the tabletop version and the ex5 is the rack version).

usually this question is asked about which 'one' keyboard, which makes it quite a bit more difficult to decide.

1. Motif ES - I'm having an absolute blast with this piece.

2. K2600X - I love it as always.

3. Picking a third would be hard...I'm enjoying the FS1R alot, I also found a VL-1 new in the box at the office...toys, toys toys.

Interesting choce, Scott. I've always been under the impression that a Chroma was kinda like having eight 2600s...I never had a 2600, though, so I can't say for sure how close they sounded.

Nice call on the Kyma system, BTW... ;)

Ooo, I love these questions!

My picks would be:

1. Any well-equipped hardware modular synth (four foot tall or better, please. ;) )

2. Moog Memorymoog

3. A rompler/workstation thingy with ha-uge amounts of polyphony.

Runner-up would be a Microwave XT 30 voice.

You make it sound like a personal ad. ;) Would that memorymoog be "non-smoking?" :D
