I totally agree.

My dad turned me on to a few of his albums when I was a kid, and we got to see him at Jazz Alley in Seattle about 10 years ago. He really is fantastic.

Here are some of my influences and favorite keyboardists, in no particular order:

- Schroeder (aka Vince Guaraldi, but when I was 10 years old it was definitely all about Schroeder)

- Kenny Kirkland

- John Medeski

- Donald Fagen and other Steely Dan session players

- Mike Barson (aka Monsieur Barso from Madness)

- Steve Nieve (Elvis Costello)

- Chester Thompson (Tower of Power)

- John Novello (Niacin)

- Steve Winwood

- Bob Marley's keyboard players

Regards,

Eric

A minimalist response...

Too many to mention, in too many different styles.

If forced to single one name out, I'd say Zawinul. He's the one that changed my life (and some other). :)

Y'know, I didn't want to come across as completely uncool, but I actually own, and like, his two CD's of music he wrote for the Tour de France. Anything beyond that is wallpaper, but there are some genuinely good tunes on these discs, and he certainly doesn't suck as a player. OK?!? FINE, I'M OUT OF THE CLOSET NOW!!! I LIKE (some) JOHN TESH.....

Thanks, Tinder, now everyone knows....

...Keith Emerson

In rock-he has no peer.

Honorable mentions go to Rod Argent and Jon Lord.

Jan Hammer and Brian Auger were as remarkable as they were unique.

Chick Corea, currently sans electronics, still gets it done, as do Russ Ferrante and Diana Krall.

Soylent Green is People!!!

OK, I have "Tour de France" and his second album, which I think is called "Garden City". He starts whimping out on that second album, but "Tour de France" is very good. I was interested in the album because the music was written specifically for television, and I do music for commercials.

So I used the title of a John Tesh record and the word "good" in the same sentence. But don't take it as an endorsement of him as a truly great keyboard player. He, like many others of his genre, makes what talent he has go a long way.

There's the people you admire and the people you love. The people I admire are a lot of the names you mentioned. The keyboardists I love (for no particular reason at all) are:

Tony Banks

Lyle Mays

Vladimir Horowitz

Cheers,

Jerry

Not exactly chopped liver. McLagan and Hopkins are more like bangers and mash. :D

I mentioned Roy Bittan, and probably should have added Danny Federici, because of all the amazing texture they add to Springsteen's material. For the same reason, Ben Tench deserves some more love, as does Garth Hudson from The Band.

Alan Pasqua, especially his current work with Peter Erskine and Dave Carpenter. These guys actually play together.

Herbie Hancock

Chick Corea

Jan Hammer

Andrew Hill

Ahmad Jamal

Paul Bley

EMO IS GOD!! Rather than a long list I'll just say you could probably include the majority of the PROG keyboardists! Someone not previously mentioned:

Jurgen Fritz (Triumvirat) Check out www.triumvirat.tv

There are no stupid questions but there are a lot of inquisitive idiots!
