Do you have a big organ?

Recommended Posts

In San Diego, we have a place called Balboa Park that includes the Spreckles Organ Pavillion. It's an outdoor ampitheatre setting with a massive pipe organ. I was walking through the park this morning when I heard someone practicing. They were really rocking... playing some sort of classical music that made the most of the the high and low timbres.

When they hit the low notes my insides shook, and it made me think that the first "heavy" music was probably "pipe organ" music.

Anyway, do any of you keyboard guys have access to a "big organ"? Have you ever had a chance to play one? Have you mastered the foot pedals and stuff?

What do you all think about this awesome instrument?

I'm still "guitplayer"!

I've had access to several, the really big on being the beast at the Cathedral Of St. John The Divine in NYC. That one's a monster. The Cathedral itself is an entire city block long, (over 600 yards inside) and the ceiling is something like 150' high. The organ can make the place shake. Here's a pic of the console:

Joe, you have access to that organ? Holy cow. How? Wait a minute...St. Johns is way uptown, like *almost* in...the Bronx, where there's another "Cathedral" of sorts called...Yankee Stadium, where another guy named...Joe Gerardi once played some "organ." Hmmm, I get it...

Trust me: When this puppy's cooking, you don't NEED a Mini.

'Course, I don't think they were too thrilled when I did "Eruption" from "Tarkus" on it...

John:

Had, HAD access on several occasions. I was in the touring company of Godspell, and we did a special performance there.

Yes, it's very uptown. 111th Street I think. This was a long time ago, 1977, I believe. The best thing I ever got to do on it was the Sinfonia from Cantata no. 29 - "Wir Danken Dir Gott" by Bach.

BTW: THAT Joe spells his last name Girardi. We're trying to convert him...

Cool!

I was in Paris many years ago, and toured their Notre Dame. The organist was practicing at the time. I asked to check it out, and couldn't resist playing the first few seconds of the Bach D- thing... http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif

Some words of wisdom:

(They work better if you read them with a chinese accent)

Foolish man give wife grand piano. Wise man give wife upright organ.

Yes I have a very large organ...never got it to make any sound though

Careful, this thread is heading the same direction as the "Trombonists Rule" thread (which makes me blush .... and wish I knew Valky).

There used to be a pizza chain in the Seattle area called Pizza & Pipes. I don't know how many there were total, but the last one burned down in Tacoma a few years ago. I used to go there for birthday parties as a kid in the mid 80's.

They had a pretty big pipe organ, which was hooked up to control all sorts of things, from a drumset that was mounted 25 feet up on a wall, to an upright piano. Plus a large pizza was only $3 or so.

Just out of curiosity I just did a quick search. They have something similar in Florida currently. http://www.roaring20spizza.com/

Here's the one that burned down in Tacoma, WA in its glory days http://www.pstos.org/instruments/wa/tacoma/pizza-pipes.htm and after it's sad demise http://www.pstos.org/instruments/wa/tacoma/pizza-pipes/fire/ http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/frown.gif

The 2nd largest pipe organ on the west coast is about 10 minutes from my house at the Crystal Cathedral. It's an awesome instrument and hearing a Bach fugue on it gives me a high. If I could, I'd like to get a chance to play it.

There is a bitchin` pipe organ at Ohio Weslean University in Deleware OH. A truly world class organ in a redneck cow town...I got to touch it once, they did not appreciate the Chopsticks routine though.

I have a great uncle who's a priest in Morelia, a town in southern México. When I was a younger, he got me to play the pipe organ in the Cathedral in this town, which by the way, hosts one of the best Conservatories in México. I actually learned to play organ before piano, so I know pedals. I did a full Toccata & Fugue in Dm there. You just have to do that tune when in front of a pipe.

I have never again laid my hands in another pipe. I wish I could do it again. Spectacular sound.

Q: I used to love the pipe sample in my korg T3. I sold it, and regret it. Which pipe organ samples do you guys like the most???

Memo
