Guilty Pleasures

Anyone still listening to Toto Coelo ? (of "I eat cannibals" fame...). "Funniest" concert I´ve ever been to. I always pretend I was tricked to go to that one, but I wasn´t. (Seeing Toto Coelo live was almost as embarrasing as still owning a DCC player that I actually bought without having a gun pointed at me. Have NEVER used that one though, probably never will. Even as a rackfiller it is a major turd).

Okay, guilty again - I loved that song!

OTOH, except for pre - SNF Bee Gees, I can't stand them, and I was never a big ABBA fan either.... My poor taste DOES have its limits! http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

John Denver was cool though....

My girlfriend gets a big kick when were in the car and I'm singin' "Man, I feel like a woman!" or " The woman in me, needs the man in you"

I'll plead guilty sir. Just go easy on me.

>>>And I thought this thread was about such classy acts as The Residents, The Normal and Snakefinger... the kind of skeletons you might find in my closet. But what do I read?: Carpenters, Boston, Milli Vanilli... only Captain and Tennile is missing it seems, you guys sure are a sick bunch!

Thanks, Mats! We ARE sick and we're not ashamed...

Classy acts? Why would anyone feel guilty about classy acts? But, it can be guilty on a variety of levels, say for instance you're a classically trained oboist with the Royal Philharmonic, but you really like The Clash. Or perhaps Barry Manilow's producer, but secretly you like Pantera.

Hank Williams Jr. had a video a few years back about this kid, safety pins in his ears, all attired in leather...and he'd sneak off and listen to country when his punk friends weren't around. That kind of thing...

Well, at least I'm not alone:

Sappy Pop: Carpenters!!! My favorite: "Hurting Each Other" and "Rainy Days and Mondays".

Cheesy Pop: Abba!!! You have to admire near-perfect pop writing and production.

Cheesy Pop Metal: Ratt!!! Both "Round and Round" and "Lay It Down" still make me turn up my radio when they pop up.

Sappy, Cheesy Themes: John Williams!!! Listen closely to the "Olympic March", the Star Wars themes or even the "NBC News" theme...too good to believe.

Silly Show Tunes: Do NOT tell anyone this. Thank you. And it is extremely limited to certain tunes for limited durations of enjoyability.

Now back to our regularly scheduled program.

Yes, I feel kind of relaxed now. I also find Eilert Pilarm quite amusing.

Yes, I do like Abba. But I have an excuse. I lived in Europe in the early 80's when they were still popular.

80's hair metal : Bon Jovi, mottley crue, etc. Dig a lot of that stuff.

Jim Brickman. Yes, I bought the live album. This I have no excuse for. Flame me all you want.

Chessy 80's pop/New Wave : Erasure, go-go's, Corey Hart, Outfield, etc etc etc.

'Grease' soundtrack. Cheesy lyrics but some cool piano work on some of the songs. Ignore the lyrics and you got some cool comping.

All of John Williams stuff (no guilt here, though)

Ottmar Liebert (disposal flamenco, but still like it)

Rush! (this one's for you Lee)

Hey man...I made out with several little girlfriends while listening to "Too Shy" by Kajagoogoo in high school. Not that I'd run out and buy the record these days, but there was plenty of worse music in 1983.

By the way...the singer of Kajagoogoo...wasn't he named LaMall or something like that? Is that where French girls go shopping? LaMall? Get it? Hee hee hee hee hee he he he he he he he heeeeeeeeeeeeee...

Gordon Lightfoot. OK, "Edmund Fitzgerald" is pretty rank, but most of his stuff is as good as MOR gets--reasonably intelligent, literate and melodic songwriting; an excellent voice; and some nice geetar from Red Shea. The thinking man's John Denver.

I like Abba and Bacharach too, but they're almost as hip as Esquivel these days.

The Guess Who "These Eyes" "Laughing" "Undone" "No Time" "Share the Land" & so on. Inane & often pretentious lyrics; M.O.R. songwriting & production all the way; insrumental skills easily equal to the garage band on the corner -- BUT those were some of the catchiest tunes I ever heard (to death). After 20+ years of not hearing them, I listened again AND FOUND MYSELF SINGING ALONG! They're in my head! Oh No!!

Alright I'll admit,

I just purchased the 'Super Fly', (original 1972 version) soundtrack. There is something cool about Curtis Mayfields' falsetto voice with that low bass. I think what drew me in was hearing the voice & bass so far apart, (about 4 octaves) scale-wise, it sounds almost dissonent, but still in key. The wah-wah isn't too bad either.

jive-turkey,

Hippie

In two days, it won't matter.

You should not feel any guilt about Curtis Mayfield... He's a heck of a songwriter, guitarist, and vocalist. (Check out his terrific Rhino boxed set...)

Not to mention the fact that he's influenced maaaaaany musicians... I doubt Prince or Lenny Kravitz would have sounded the same had Curtis Mayfield not existed.

I'd been trying to dig up a song that was sticking in my head since I first heard it back in the 70's. While it was definately early 70's I wouldn't really call it cheesey in fact I think it is one of the classic one hit wonders of the pop/rock era. I finally found it on a compilation CD about three months ago.

Being an Australian band probably none of you guys have ever heard it but the song was called 'Golden Miles' by 'Healing Force'. It featured a really great Hammond riff and was sort of a cross between Blood, Sweat and Tears & Procul Harem. I saw some really old footage of the band on TV a while ago and the played another song I'd never heard before. They had contractual problems and never released an album, just a single.

These guys really had something but they just somehow slipped through the gap. It would have been interesting seeing what else the could have produced if they had gone on with it.

Well for starters I have to admit that I sometimes crave hearing Ratt's tune "Round and Round". Other closet favorites included all of the Men at Work hits and Hall and Oates "I can't go for that". That tune has the cheesiest, smuttiest drum beat + bass line that I've ever heard. It sounds like it belongs in a low-grade porno ;-).

Curtis Mayfield is hip stuff. There should be absolutely no guilt about liking his music at all! Admitting to liking Rush -- now that takes stones!

I dug Curtis Mayfield...God rest his soul.

Didn't he write that "People Get Ready" song that Rod Stewart and Jeff Beck did? So sad, I guess something like a light truss onstage fell on him and crippled him, and it was just a matter of time. I think he just passed away last year.

Yep. He also wrote "Future Shock" (covered by Herbie Hancock) and "It's Alright" (covered by Huey Lewis acapella, was a minor hit a few years ago).

All of his stuff from the Impressions (the group he started out in) to his late '70s stuff is amazing and inspiring.
