The Real MC
14 minutes ago, mcgoo said: It's also pretty easy to pick out people who know how to act around dogs if they're a stranger. I'm to the point where I coach people before they come to my house for the first time on how to keep my dogs from acting like hostile aliens are invading. In my experience, most domesticated dogs bark because they want to make new friends. Dogs can sense fear which gives them license to defend their home or to attack. Do not be afraid. When greeting a pet dog on the first visit, do not move your hand above their head. Dogs interpret that motion as a threat. Relax your arms low, show the dog the back of your hand, then slowly move your hand to allow the dog to sniff your scent. If the dog growls, pull your hand away and make sure their owner controls them. If the dog doesn't growl, talk to them in a friendly voice and try to rub their chin as a friendly gesture, then pet their head. Tails talk. A wagging tail is a good sign.
Synthaholic
Last week was two years since I lost this sweet boy. He would have been 16 now. And this past day after Christmas I lost my girl Pepper, and that one was tough. 6 weeks, 6 years, and Christmas Day, nearly 16 years old. Now I just have this mess. What a piece of work she is! 7 9 Quote The fact there's a Highway To Hell and only a Stairway To Heaven says a lot about anticipated traffic numbers People only say "It's a free country" when they're doing something shitty-Demetri Martin

El Lobo
A friend had his dog's DNA tested at 2 different labs. The results came back very different. Mike Martin, if that dog in your pic is 87% German Shepherd, I am 98% chimpanzee. Stokely
Great thread, if bittersweet for me.. We got Findley (Finn) as a young companion to older pets that ended up passing away. I'm a believer that cats are best with at least one buddy, so we got Montgomery (Monty), the white cat in this pic. These two are just awesome. They couldn't be more different as far as personality, but they get along great and wrestle and play every day. Finn in particular is my "big buddy" (he's not really very big), he brings me little fuzzy play balls and I throw them and he fetches (or catches them in midair like one of those shepherds catching frisbees, it's amazing) Having older pets is tough when health issues happen and their bodies start breaking down. The spirit is willing but they just can't do it anymore. Taking my old cat to the vet to be put to sleep tore me up bigtime. Right now we are getting a break with these two relatively young, very easy to care for cats. Jumping on my keyboards is about the biggest hassle I face with them. 3
