Music you listen to for relaxation

Recommended Posts

I have several, however ones that stand out would be William Ackerman....really pristine guitar. Also any of Robert Fripps space guitar stuff that he loops, also very moving. My wife likes George Winston's piano stuff, and I do too, but I prefer his slack key guitar work. Bluegrass really soothes my soul for some reason, fast or slow.....and normally played at my house on a lazy Sunday with LOTS of coffee. Other notables include Enya, Clancy Brothers, Neil Youngs acoustic stuff, Bob Dylan's acoustic stuff, Bluesiana Triangle, Uncle Tupelo, Toad the Wet Sprocket, and early Jayhawks. Man I can't think of anymore but we always load the CD changer and let er rip on a Sunday with so much eclectic stuff....never a dull moment. Might have a CD of old 20's jazz, with Northern Exposures soundtrack, and maybe a Jerry Douglas CD after that. Yeah we're wierd....but it's alot of fun.

I get sooooo many "radio station" promotional CDs from a friend when ever they clean out their excess, that I have this never ending suppply of new music....from around the world...some of it sucks, but a lot has been good. For relaxation...or just ambient fill...I really lean towards anything where I can't understand the lanquage, if there are vocals, OR ethinc stuff from India, Africa, the Far East and South America (well, that's most of the non-English speaking countries...hehehe) The "English/Western Civ" stuff...I search out the ambient/trance releases...though occassionaly some good up-tempo rock/pop can be relaxiing too. Oh...traditional classical gets in the rotation too. Man there is soooooooooo much music out there, that's why I find it puzzeling when some people say that there is nothing good these days to listen to. That's probably because they have limited or specialized tastes, and that can get played out pretty quickly.

Older Blink 182...the stuff where they sounded like they were arriving at terminal velocity on every song. Reminds me of how much energy I don't have. HAHAHAHAHA... I think for relaxation I prefer anything acousticky...James Taylor, stuff like that...

I really like the softer Hendrix stuff - The Wind Cries Mary, & a few cuts from Axis: Bold as Love. Some of the softer tunes from King Crimsons debut album (I Talk To the Wind is one) Also, Venus Isle (the whole album) by Eric Johnson Django Reinhardt is very relaxing, but hard to find. Joe Pass is great, too. - Philbo Tangent Music

When I need a break from my usually bumpity-bump, I keep it relatively simple... Miles Davis-Kind of Blue Herbie Hancock-Headhunters Chick Corea Keith Jarrett Yellowjackets-anything, but Four Corners particularly Stevie Wonder Amel Larieux-Infinite Possibilities is one of the most under-rated CD's out Jill Scott-The vibe is all that... I have a couple buds who are deep into Pink Floyd and Zepplin, and never have anything good to say about any "new" music. I've tried to steer them toward Rollie Radio or somewhere they'll find something I personally think is exciting and fresh, but they are firmly rooted. I understand that, and not cutting them, but damn.....sure does limit yourself...in my opinion.

They take me back to a time when I was young, stupid, happy and full of big ideas and dreams. But there IS so much more out there...don't understand why people limit themselves and then complain about their lack of choices.

MPB artists from Brazil, my favorite being Ivan Lins (BRILLIANT songwriter) anything Pat Metheny ever recorded, excluding "Zero Tolerance" and "Song X", but particularly "Secret Story", "As Falls Wichita...", and the recent Trio releases John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman - perhaps my all time favorite album Julia Fordham "Porcelain" - what a voice, what a recording Brad Mehldau's trio CDs

I find there's a lot of Brazillian music for just about every mood and every level of relaxation... The Getz/Gilberto album is a classic. I also dig Boca Livre, especially their album "Dancando Pelas Sombras" (one of the best produced and engineered albums I've ever heard). Paulo Bellinati/Monica Salmaso's Afro Sambas is some of the most gorgeous vocal/acoustic guitar stuff, and Rick Udler/Maria Avlim's Rhythm and Romance is some of the most fun. Ana Caram's Bossa Nova is really good too ("Look to the Sky" is melllllllllllow...). There's a number of rock groups out there who fall under a "slowcore" category... Red House Painters , Low , Ida , Bluetile Lounge ... There's Talk Talk's Laughing Stock and Mark Hollis' solo album ... Bark Psychosis' "Hex" (out of print -- can't find a link). I also dig minimalist stuff, particularly Steve Reich's work. Electronic Counterpoint, Octet, and Music for a Large Ensemble are all terrific. One of the few electronic music "bands" I like, Insides, put out a blissful-sounding album a few years ago called "Euphoria". (Kinda sounds like a very mellowed-out Bjork crossed with Steve Reich.) Not all of this stuff is conventionally relaxing... Some of it might very well drive other people up the wall... But it does the trick for me.
Originally posted by Tedster: Oh yeah, I love that Bossa stuff...especially played on a nylon string guitar...with some girl who sounds like Sade singing.
That's a good way of describing it... One coworker once referred to this Toots Thielemans album as "butt-shakin' music"... BTW mzeger -- the above album features Ivan Lins on vocals... Also Caetano Veloso, Milton Nascimento, Chico Buraque, Gilberto Gil, and others... Kinda like a "who's who" of modern Brazillian music. It's a great mellow album too, with lots of understated (but tasty) playing and rich harmonies. Plus, I don't know of many jazz harmonica players other than Stevie Wonder... Toots is way cool in my book.

I echo Meccajay and Tedster, Michael Franks and Sade could keep me entertained for the rest of my Sundays. I've also enjoyed a new age artist called John Serrie, his music has no rhythm, more just tone poems, very relaxing stuff.
Originally posted by Tedster: Hey, thanks for the tip, Pop...I'm gonna add that CD to my collection...!
Hope you like it -- However, I don't remember there being the Sade-type vocals on that particular album... Mostly instrumental and male vocals. The Getz/Gilberto, Bellinati/Salmaso, Udler/Avlim, and Caram albums I listed in my other post all have the Sade-like vocals and nylon guitar kind of sound... If you dig the brief sound clips over at CDNOW, I can vouch for the quality of the the songs and performances.

Well I must just be weird, but I very rarely listen to music to relax. Music just gets me too excited! Which is fine because I have a naturally pretty laid back personality anyway. And I can't stand music that is supposed to be "wallpaper", it doesn't relax me, it really sets my teeth on edge. Most music that was made for this purpose really annoys or bores the hell out of me so I don't listen to it at all. I do find the sounds of nature soothing so I like to go hiking when I need to chill, and let the sounds of the birds and running water relax me. About the closest thing to relaxing music I listen to is classical, and even a lot of the classical music I like is more of the "stirring" variety than relaxing! --Lee

Yep, I know of Toots' Brazil Project (might be 2 of them). While I enjoy Milton, Gilberto, Caetano, Gal Costa, Elis Regina, Nana Caymmi, and of course Tom Jobim, there's something about Ivan Lins' music that just hits me powerfully. While it's more "smooth jazz" than Brazil, the Ivan Lins tribute CD "A Love Affair" is excellent. Includes a Grammy-award winning Sting track & Grover Washington Jr.'s last recording, plus a supporting cast of Michael Brecker, Marcus Miller, Jason Miles (who also produced), Vinnie Colaiuta, Dave Koz, Will Lee, Cyro Baptista, and more talented artists. There's great music being made by the "2nd generation" of Brazilian stars: Bebel Gilberto's "Tanto Tempo" (daughter of Joao), classic singing paired with contemporary beats, and Moreno Veloso (son of Caetano) has a great recent record, "Musical Typewriter".
Originally posted by mzeger: There's great music being made by the "2nd generation" of Brazilian stars:
Thanks for the suggestions... I'll check 'em out! I dunno if this would fall under the category of "relaxing music" (probably for Master Zap it would ), but two excellent technoish/dj-type albums were made by Bossa Cuca Nova (Roberto Menescal -- guitarist, his son, and two other dj/sampling-type guys). I normally don't dig electronic stuff, but the songs are so good (classic Bossa Nova tunes) and many of the performances/productions are so fun, I don't care if they used loops/drum machines/samples/whatever... Great summertime music.
