KuruPrionz
There has been crass music since there has been music. I've got a CD of songs that were recorded in the 20's and 30's in America - title is Copulatin' Blues. I played in a band with a friend who's Dad was in a band when he was much younger. He knew a ton of vile and filthy little jingles. Nothing has changed except the delivery system and the level of censorship. Humans are still filthy, unimaginative creatures. Some of them are hysterically funny. And some write, record and perform incredibly beautiful music today. Seek and ye shall find!!! I've been adopted into a Lummi family by an Elder. I've sat with the Elders at a party, out under the trees. They go around the group, slagging each other and laughing. It is a fun game they play and they are without mercy or decorum. They all laugh, they are all dear friends and family. They love to tease and you need to be fast if somebody lobs one at you. It is part of normal conversation. Quote It took a chunk of my life to get here and I am still not sure where "here" is.
Notes_Norton
I don't mind the crass lyrics nearly as much as I mind the fact that to me music needs melody, harmony and rhythm. I prefer my music to have all 3. If it doesn't it soon bores me. But it's obviously OK for others, and that's OK with me. GovernorSilver
I don't listen to American pop music. Too many other options. Between Youtube's recommendation engine and Bandcamp, I have no incentive to seek out whatever is playing on the radio. When I do get into my car - usually for a grocery trip - I'm listening to news or public radio instead of corporate music. I won't diss Minaj but if you don't like her music, I don't understand why you would torture yourself instead of just turning off that radio and putting on music that you like. Nowarezman
I'm not offended by people being offended. But it's just a fact that pornography has gone mainstream. I grew up in an era where Playboys were the strongest dose of media erotica commonly known. Harder stuff of course was around, but I never saw any as a teenager in the 60s and early 70s. Scarcity was a huge part of the appeal, too. Sure, the porn was around somewhere, but it was hidden away in secret stashes known only to a few. And there was a huge stigma, no question. I really don't know what it must be like, growing up now in an era when porn is as available as network TV shows, 24/7. There's a free and direct porn-line into almost every house and bedroom in the world. The articles I read in the NY Times and such tell me that porn is where kids get their basic sex education. I'm sure if I was a teen today I would have seen countless hours of any form or variety of porn I desired. Who with any hormones at all could resist? And the articles also tell me that the porn business is still abusive, exploitative, and a terrible trap for young women. So the more things change the more they stay the same I guess. All this to say - yeah, porn has always been around, but the mainstreaming is a new thing and a culturally significant new thing. Not like we haven't seen how this has been on the way - each generation likes to think of itself as more "advanced" than the prior when it comes to self-indulgences and permissiveness. Well, at this late date in the story, we've reached the point of near total permissiveness, with the only voices of restraint coming from those involved in damage control, or from our slowly but constrantly dwindling seriously religious population. The masses of conservative religious identifiers (i.e. not particularly serious about it all) having become pretty indistinguishable morally from the general population for some time now. nat

One of the last times I visited my sister, i got stuck listening to that song by Snoop Dogg and Kate Perry, because it was constantly being played in the shopping malls, and my Mom loved to shop - still does, lol. That's about the only way I hear American pop music, when it's played in a store and I can't escape!

Anderton
I'm not offended by people being offended. But it's just a fact that pornography has gone mainstream. It's entirely possible that removing the "forbidden fruit" aspect will dilute its impact. I don't know if these stats still hold, but the Netherlands used to have the lowest per capita pot consumption for industrialized nations, even though marijuana was "permitted" (technically speaking, it wasn't "legal") and available everywhere. So what ended up happening is people would go to a cafe with their friends on their birthday and smoke a joint, because it just wasn't a big deal. I could get into a rant about how sex education isn't the same as love education, but that's an entirely different topic Quote Craig Anderton Educational site: http://www.craiganderton.org Music: http://www.youtube.com/thecraiganderton Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/craig_anderton

Anderton
I think there's a lot of concern about things that don't require concern. I remember when flag-burning was a HUGE issue. People were flipping out about whether it was a first amendment thing or not, getting into fights, passionate/long-drawn-out stuff, bills introduced in the Senate, etc. etc. Now it's just a yawner. Same with artists being outrageous. Okay, you got your 15 minutes of fame! Great!! Do you think I care? No! Do you think you'll matter in 5 years? No!! All I can say is it's important to invest your money wisely for when nobody gives a flying truck any more. Anyway, fellow forum folks, you wanna get YouTube attention? Here's my gift to you! Put these lyrics to a melody of sorts, put it on YouTube, and you'll get YOUR 15 minutes!! Cats are big on the internet Boeing makes stuff and planes and jets I think I'm hungry, I should try "food" My neighbor next door is in a bad mood I don't give a sh*t about politics As long as they don't raise the price on Netflix Cars are made of plastic and stuff Cats go meow and dogs go "ruff!" And sports is like Kellogg's Corn Flakes After all, baseball calls it "home plate" Plates are where you eat your stuff Cats go meow and dogs go "ruff" And cats are big on the internet The best way to catch fish is with a net Wires go from one place to another And now I really should swear so...motherf**cker! That will get me an "R" rating And can I use the word masterpating? Although mom was a serious trucker Who listened to country music, and wasn't a sucker You know she had a Peterbilt She drank coffee but liked it with milk Circles are round, and coffee has grounds Dr. Seuss was a genius I found And rhyzone.com is all I need To crank out lyrics ENDLESSLY Okay! Now one of you can put this to music, and make a million dollars!!! Happy holidays!!!!! I have only one request: DO NOT list me as the songwriter. Use my pseudonym, Barky the Dog. Thank you! Winston Psmith
As an old Fugs fan, I'm not in a position to point any fingers. If you've never heard "Supergirl", "Slum Goddess", or "Wide, Wide River of Shit,", well, don't say I didn't warn you. OTOH, if you've really NEVER even heard of The Fugs, please, pull up a chair and have a listen. "Nothing" is a personal favorite. Metal has its share of perfectly awful lyrics, too. Anyone remember the band W.A.S.P.? The band name was supposedly an acronym for "We Are Sexual Perverts". They also had a song titled "Animal (Fuck Like A Beast)". I don't look to Pop Music, in any of its forms, for intellectual depth, nor artistry: it's a mass-market product, like fast food, or anything disposable. FWIW, though, I have to give some respect, however grudgingly, to anyone who could write a song like the OP quoted, and make money from it. Quote "Monsters are real, and Ghosts are real too.
