Ivan May
The seventies were full of lightweight easy listening singers like Helen Reddy, and while she’s made more songs that are boring than entertaining, Angie Baby is one of the few songs she’s made that I can truly appreciate.

Werewolf by Night
Paul Asbell: "Composers escorting folk and ethnically-based musical cultures into the “serious music” world is a time-honored American tradition… Aaron Copland, Charles Ives, Scott Joplin and George Gershwin immediately come to mind. My "Steel String Americana" CD included a guitar treatment of a piece from Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess”, but for my 2nd CD, I wanted to extend my reach a bit further. “West Side Story” remains a cultural high-water mark thanks to its successful transmutation of street-savvy latin, jazz, and popular music into orchestral and operatic form, without losing any of the vitality of the music’s roots. This sort of ambitious vision has often fallen flat in less capable hands- but Leonard Bernstein joins the very small club of composers who manage to pull it off. Tony and Maria’s romantic duet “Somewhere” has been done in so many ways over the years that I wondered if a different twist could possibly be found. On my "Roots & Branches" CD, I think I managed to do so. Let me know if you agree! Lenny was born on this day in 1918. Happy Birthday to a composer, conductor and educator for the ages... Leonard Bernstein." 6 Quote Ask yourself- What Would Ren and Stimpy Do? ~ Caevan James-Michael Miller-O'Shite ~ _ ___ _ Leprechaun, Esquire _ ___ _

Dannyalcatraz
Speaking of covers…there’s a few musicians out there doing covers of songs as if they had been done by other bands. Confused? Here’s one guy doing Shaggy’s “It Wasn’t Me” in Chevelle’s style: Here’s the same dude guesting on his buddy’s channel doing Spice Girls’ “Wannabe” in the style of System of a Down: 3 1 Quote Sturgeon's 2nd Law, a.k.a. An approach that's near and dear to my heart! 6 hours ago, Dannyalcatraz said: Confused? No! In a covers and originals band that I was once in, I was very proud of my "cover version of the Stones' "Wild Horses", played as if it had been done by Pink Floyd/David Gilmour"; I must have done a good job, as often someone would say, "Hey! That sounds like Pink Floyd!"- to which I'd reply, "THANK-YOU!!" I also cooked up a Dub-Reggae styled version of "I Don't Need No Doctor" (most often associated with Ray Charles), complete with heavily overdriven guitar and crazy oscillating distorted echoes going into in runaway feedback. (Here's a thread about the echo effect settings: El Capistan Dub/Reggae Echo insanity) And an almost frantically sped-up version of Bob Dylan's "One More Cup of Coffee", complete with Jazz-informed chord grips that I'd play high up the fretboard, while another player strummed out the original's open-position chords. 6 hours ago, Dannyalcatraz said: Here’s one guy doing Shaggy’s “ItWasn’t Me” in Chevelle’s style: Cool... 6 hours ago, Dannyalcatraz said: Here’s the same dude guesting on his buddy’s channel doing Spice Girls’ “Wannabe” inthestyleof System of a Down: Haahh! Ivan May
No, it’s absolutely unrelated to the classic power ballad penned by Felice and Boudleaux Bryant. Instead, Love Hurts is one of the greatest songs Andrew Gold could have ever composed. He played on nearly every studio album recorded in the 1970s, and Love Hurts is the strongest song off of his debut album, released in 1975. Playing nearly every instrument, and writing every song on the album, he was only 24 years old when the workout was recorded. Gold is also known for collaborating with artists as diverse as Linda Ronstadt, Ringo Starr, Jennifer Warnes, Art Garfunkel and Kate and Anna McGarrigle. I wasn’t kidding when I pointed out how talented he was!

Ivan May
Okay, okay, there are plenty of good artists who cover Grateful Dead songs, and while I never cared for Jane's Addiction, I have to point out how good their cover of Ripple is. I still prefer the original version of the song, with the excellent mandolin work of David Grisman, however.
