Chick Corea "Five Peace Band" keyboards used?

Jazz+

Recommended Posts

Somebody gave me Corea's recent "Five Peace Band". Corea plays a Rhodes patch and he pitch bends it sometimes. He also plays some mini moog type sounding patches. Which Yamaha XS8 Rhodes patch is he using? I think the XS has the same Rhodes samples as in the older Motif models.

In Chick's hands, XS, ES, Juno D, etc., the patch doesn't make a difference. They would all sound the same. The man just has 'it'.

I may check out the Five Peace band at Music Center Strathmore on Apr 29th.

What I find ironic is, Chick is such a GREAT musician, and a real Rhodes has been a long standing mainstay of his KB rig. He's playing an XS8? Wow. I guess that buries the theory that you have to have "The real thing". Not only the patch he is playing doesn't make a difference, the KB doesn't matter either. Yep, he's got it!

And he's not a gear snob!

Cheers,

I saw him w/ RTF a few months ago and he had the Rhodes. Maybe it wasn't practical to take one to Europe? Either way, he's a master and he could make a Yamaha portasound sound great.

Jazz+ it's hard to tell what patch he's using but I have similar ones on my S90ES from the Vintage Keys add on sound set. A lot of those, to me, have more dynamic range than a lot of the stock patches.

I'm guessing the fact that he's a Yamaha Artist might have a little to do with it... ;)

Good point. But if the XS sucked, he wouldn't be using it for shows.

Agreed... but it explains why he may not be hauling around the New Rhodes, or anything by any other manufacturer... ;)

(and, as pointed out by others, even a mediocre sound in the hands of the master would shine...)

Yamaha must be paying him the big bucks.

I also mentioned that Chick could play anything and make it sound good. I wonder how he would do on a washboard?

A friend of mine who is also a Yamaha Artist basically said that whatever he needs when on tour, he gets. They did the Tonight Show and he just flew in and the gear was there, set up for him. He plugged in the memory card, loaded his patches, and away he went. And he was a B or C-level artist in the Yamaha world.

Not sure how it differs when you're as big a name as Chick, but you can be damn sure he's not paying for the gear. ;)

Sorry, by "others" I meant "not me". ;)

:freak: I just had a bizarre image of Chick appearing in overalls and a straw hat on Hee Haw. :freak:

Oh, they've definitely got roadies; they're touring arenas all the time... but for the Leno show, Yamaha delivered to his specs.

I'm paraphrasing his tale, and I'm sure his band's roadies did the final stage setup, but they didn't have to bring any of the keyboard backline (which included an ES8 and ES7, if memory serves, it was a few years back) for the show. :thu:

Ahhh, I remember life on the road with a crew... that was the life. :)

Chick is one of Yamaha's flagship artists and they surely pay him the big bucks indeed. I remember seeing him at Catalina Bar and Grill and Yamaha had taken the Steinway and set it on it's side in the corner so they could put their concert grand on stage for Chick.

I dunno, the Motif doesn't sound like trash to me, even when played by people other than Chick.

No doubt he can make a Korg M3 sound like a million bucks too. :D

Exactly. Having Yamaha take care of the XS8 logistics is probably way less of a headache for Chick. And the XS sounds great anyway, so why not use it?

Mr. Cranky here. I'm going to have to dispute that Chick makes anything sound great.

For piano sounds, that may be. But his lead synthesizer tones and pitch bending techniques have been oozing solid coagulated milk protein for years. IMHO, of course.

I should mention that when I saw him w/ RTF he had an ES8 on stage as well. Played all the clav stuff and a lot of pads from it.

Maybe I am not that inspired by Chick's soloing on this new album... he plays a lot of continuos fast double time lines and patterns, which are pretty nice but get tiresome after five minutes. And when he is not playing his fast double time lines his melodies are sometimes not very happening - he goes into his spares pitch bending notes that sound sort of cheesey to me. His little pitch bent melodies almost border on sounding kind of dorky... like when he sat in with that rock band at the Grammy Awards a couple years ago. For inspiring pitch bending I prefer the likes of Mike Stern and Johhn Schofield. I think would rather be listening to my Michael Brecker CDs when I am in the mood for fusion than this jamming sounding collaberation with McLaughlin.

I respect the opinion but don't quite understand the purpose of asking which Motif sounds he uses.

As it pertains to pitch bending, Stern and Scofield are guitarists.:)

IMO, nobody pitch bends a KB solo better than George Duke.

Otherwise, Chick getting paid to jam with McLaughlin and the others provides him with another outlet to play and have fun.

For my money, the master of tasteful and subtle pitch bending, and the artistic use of synths in general, has got to be the late Joe Zawinul. He set the bar very high, indeed.

I do enjoy Chick Corea's playng, though.

Guy I grew up with plays drums for Megadeth. Has a pretty nice kit, so I asked him once how much it was worth.

Some of his older stuff is definitely porn flavoured.

And the Grammy Award for Best Pitch Bending goes to...

Hey, all those guys are great. I love Corea, Zawinul, Herbie, etc. It doesn't mean I've always had to enjoy every single moment of everything they play either.

Chick and Herbie tend to spread themselves a little thin sometimes, performing in a broad variety of situations, like Chick with Bela Fleck and Bobby McFerrin, etc. Jarrett tends to stay more within his musical environment, as did Zawinul. All performances not being equal, it doesn't take away from Chick's prowess as an influential pianist, composer and keyboardist. Like ProfD said, I just think he's having fun here.
