I was able to get my friend to let me use some of his webspace. What an ordeal. Esnips was no good for me.

So....after all that I have a shabby sounding clip. My piano is out of tune at the moment. I didn't have time to EQ or position the mics properly. I'm going out of town for 10 days on Thursday and also am in the process of moving. I reharmed this thing and didn't get a chance to even really get it under my fingers, so the feel sucks in certain places. But, here you go.

Ornithology hastily reharmed

Though a bop tune would present some challenges that ballads don't.

SK - "It's you or no one" is great! I'd love to hear a complete version. Also, who are the bassist and drummer? They play amazingly well.

Just a thought, however - I wonder why you don't mp3 your audio before uploading. A 40 or 50 meg download can be tedious in periods of big net traffic. ;)

The reason is - I'm still a novice at uploading, so I'll have to get a converter program. Sorry again for the size of that download.

Drums - Mike Smith, a great friend and musician who passed away almost a year ago.

Bass - Paul Langosch

We played a few gigs, but mainly played for ourselves in Paul's basement regularly for years, every time he'd get off the road with Tony Bennett.

The whole tune will be on my CD. It was too long to upload it all. Thanks, Carlo. Glad you liked it.

Yeah Dave - I really like that extended bridge on Star Wa.. uh Star Eyes. I did a strange reharm of that tune yesterday, but it turned out more as an intellectual exercise, 'why bother?' type result. Maybe I'll post it anyway.

Those are some cool reharmed chords on the last 'A' of Rainbow you have there.

Dave's version of "Star Eyes" is more true to the mood of the tune. Here's an alternate universe version, overly reharmonized. I played it poorly because I was trying to remember all the chords while I played, so it was hard to get under my hands. But this one's nothing better than a mental exercise anyway - doubt I'll play it again (hopefully.)

Dave that's nice Over the Rainbow action! I like the pedal and I like what you do to the I chord at the end before it resolves! I don't have time to sit down and figure out what the heck it is but I think it's in the neighborhood of the I diminished chord with a natural 9th on top. Lovely.

And great balance of voices at the beginning. It reminds me of the Chopin F major nocturne which I might have played at your house that one time. There's a bass happening, a melody, and pulsating inner voices that just tickle in the middle. Very pianistic.

Cool songs guys. I'm going to listen to more now...

OH MAN STAR EYES. Nice Dave!!! Nice Steinway too holy crap. I really like the twists and turns this thing takes you on. And the ending is like Monk for the new millenium. Very nice.

Just the time to peek... While waiting to have the time to post something substantial, just for fun here's my version of the Beatles' Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, Bartok-style... renamed "Lucy in the Sky with Bartok". :D It was on a KC comp too.

It's not jazz, but what the heck... it should qualify as a "reharmonization". :D

Hey, that's so cool Marino! The resolution at the end was one of the highlights. Hmm... I believe I detect a little 'mad scientist' in there too. :) Thanks for sharing that. Definitely meets all requirements for reharm.

I just did a 'past life regression' version of Star Eyes. "Traditional" jazz this time, just playin' the tune. :deadhorse:

Bobby, do you have music for Ornithology?...that was cool.

Only the changes I scribbled above the real book chart. I can post those when I get a minute. Getting a minute will be hard for the next 10 days as I'm going to Hawaii Thursday and have to pack on Wed. But I'll try.

Marino, I heard that on your site when I first joined the forum last year...blew me away then....nothing has changed since. Do YOU have music for that?

Sure. It's quite long, because it's written note-for-note... I'll be back home at late night, I'll try to post it then.

I worked up a lot of the Mikrokosmos Bk. 5&6 a long time ago. I love Bartok...that is really brilliant man.

Thanks... I studied classical for a long time, and Bartok is one of my favorites. And the "Dances in Bulgarian Rhythms" at the end of Mikrokosmos 6 are a favorite among favorites. My composition teacher loved Bartok as well, so we discussed his techniques a bit... now if there ever was a musical genius in the early 20th century, I'd choose Bartok among so many great composers. The more I get to know his work, the more I love and respect it.

The leader/singer is great though, in fact he told me so himself.

That IS brilliant.

Yeah many a road gig is actually not so great when all is said and done looking at the logistics and time away and home gigs sacrificed. This trip to Hawaii with one of my old bands will probably be a minor hit financially (I'd make a little more at home), but I weight it against the fact that I'm going to Hawaii for free and I've never been.

Back on topic, I had a couple things I wanted to post before I left that it doesn't seem I'll have time to do but we'll see. One was Tom Kubis's version of 'Over the Rainbow' which he graciously gave me the score to for study purposes. His changes are obviously not out of left field but there are some very pretty things he does. It's a vocal chart.

I also might post a little from the road if I can. Who knows.

Have a great trip, man! Never heard of anyone who went to Hawaii who didn't. (Like "Yeah, Hawaii sucked.")

Just a short sample of some musings on Beautiful Love. I clipped it 1/3 of the way through so the file is smaller.

Back to the forum finally...

I'm trying to download SK's tune right now, but my ADSL is misbehaving again... I hope to post a comment later.

First of all, here is the score for "Lucy in the Sky with Bartok". It took me a while to look in the old vaults...

It's six pages of rather dense music - handle with care.

I'll be back shortly with some more music. :)

OK, here's a version of "Them There Eyes". It's taken from my old notebooks, and it's 'benign' enough to be performed with a singer. :)

To illustrate a bit what I was saying to Sue earlier in the thread, I took into account the rather joyous lyrics of the song, and treated the harmony mostly with *ascending* chromatic bass.

Here's a leadsheet :

And here's an audio rendition. I tried some new settings for the piano sample here, with limited dynamics, but I wasn't totally comfortable with it. As a result, it sounds a bit stiff.

Gotta go. 'See' you soon! :)
