  1. In the quieter, organ-only part of the song near the end, hearing and watching the way @Jim Alfredson shaped the sound using the drawbars, expression pedal, and Leslie was awesome, and inspirational.
  2. That’s the best a keyboardist can do to get that rock look a guitarist gets when pushing up on the strings, back arched, strained expression…
  3. This is one of the main reasons why I stopped doing classic rock gigs a couple of years ago. I enjoyed the music and got to do some fun soloing (loved playing the ironically named Hush). But the volume, especially at practice, was so overwhelming that it was more a form of torture than enjoyment. With one band, I put a dB meter on my phone and routinely clocked ~110 dB at any point in the small practice room! Everyone’s wearing the most restrictive earplugs available, so all you can hear is extremely muffled music and a bunch of noise. Time to move on.
  4. Indeed. I’m referring to the band situations where it doesn’t.
  5. In guitar-based cover bands, I sometimes think the guitarists want the keyboardist to play a role similar to the sound guy: make the guitars sound good and otherwise stay the hell out of the way.
  6. When I listened to Joey D in the OP video, his improvisation sounded impossible. But now that I’ve seen the transcription, I can see that his improvisation … also looks impossible!
  7. Oh man, if you scroll down in the link @ElmerJFudd just posted in his Yamaha CP YC Tablet Holder thread, you’ll find this exact holder! What a coincidence … (along with some other cool holders)
  8. Although bands often cover old songs for a variety of reasons, it’s not often (I assume) that a band does covers of such dated covers of such well known songs. I’d be concerned that the audience would just assume that what the band is playing is the band’s take on these songs.
  9. Although I can’t say I learned anything new, I watched the entire video. She has enormous talent, is musically creative, and has great technique (including excellent tapping technique). And, in addition, her playing is quite enjoyable to listen to! She’s an awesome player.
  10. The Beyerdynamic website says: “Open headphones offer the advantage that they sound a little more voluminous and detailed and give a better feeling of spaciousness. This also reduces the feeling of inside-head localisation.” Difference between open and closed headphones
  11. Came across this short video on YouTube - some cool bass and drums funk/fusion. It says the bass player, David Pastorius, is Jaco’s nephew.
  12. Yes, playing piano on my Electro is nothing like playing piano! I too would have to learn any intricate or fast lick on the Nord itself.
  13. Another vote for the Beyerdynamic DT series. I use mine all the time. Very comfortable.
  14. A nice step up from “noodling on the black keys” would be noodling on the pentatonics associated with each chord.
  15. Al Jarreau has put lyrics to some Jazz tunes. Spain and Take Five, for example….
  16. Hard to believe that keyboard players are a lucrative market for scammers! The scammers must be targeting the “vintage furniture” market - the same people who can afford to buy a Steinway grand but have little to no interest in playing it. 😁
  17. I was in a band where the band leader used, for the same purpose of holding a vinyl sign, a portable frame made for holding banners. It worked great for exactly this application. I just searched on Amazon for “frames for banners” and lots of options came up.
  18. I had a similar set of requirements, along with good AP, and got the CP73, which I am very happy with. AP and EP sound great. The action is very nice for AP and EP, but (not surprisingly then) not as great for clav.
  19. Radial also makes the KL-8, an 8 channel rackmount version of the Key Largo.
